Identification and Physical Characteristics of the Ancient Charcoals Excavated from Chudong-ri Site, Korea (서천 추동리 문화유적에서 채취된 숯의 수종식별과 물리적 특성)

  • The identification of species, hygroscopic property, and ability of ethylene gas absorption of 23 ancient charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials and roof-tile kilns of Chudong-ri cultural site were investigated. All of the 12 charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials were broad-leaved trees. Among the total 12 samples, 9 samples were Lepidobalanus and others were Celtis spp.. On the other hand, other 11 charcoals from roof-tile kilns were needle-leaved tree, Pinus spp.(hard pine). The broad-leaved tree charcoals from wooden coffin burials showed a higher moisture absorption capacity than needle-leaved tree charcoals from roof-tile kilns. The ethylene gas absorption was greater in the Lepidobalanus charcoal than that of Celtis spp. and Pinus spp. (hard pine) charcoal. The broad-leaved tree charcoal having high absorption ability of substances was due to a large microporous and specific surface area. Therefore, it was estimated that broad-leaved tree charcoals were filled in order to make favorable condition in tomb. The wood quality of pine is soft and easy to burn because of low specific gravity, as well as high calorific value by resin in wood. We could assume that the pine wood was used as fuel for roof-tile kilns because of easy control of heating and thermal power.

Decomposition Characteristics of CF4 by SiC/Al2O3 Modified with Cerium Sulfate Using Microwave System (마이크로파를 이용한 황산세륨으로 개질화 된 SiC/Al2O3 촉매의 CF4 분해 특성)

  • Alumina-based catalysts with different Ce loadings were studied in the decomposition of $CF_4$ using microwave heating system. Heating material of microwave system used Silicon Carbide. The crystallographic phases of catalysts were investigated by XRD and decomposition rates of $CF_4$ were examined by GC-TCD. The catalysts of 10 wt% Ce modified $Al_2O_3$ showed higher $CF_4$ decomposition rate than un-modified $Al_2O_3$ for $500^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature. The k value of catalysts shows the order of $Ce(20)/Al_2O_3=Ce(0)/Al_2O_3<Ce(5)/Al_2O_3<Ce(10)/Al_2O_3$. XRD patterns of $Ce(0)/Al_2O_3$ were no difference before and after the reaction and showed $Al_2O_3$ phases. With the increase in Ce loadings, $CeO_2$, $AlF_3$ of XRD peaks was observed. The results was indicated that Ce modifed $Al_2O_3$ than un-modifed $Al_2O_3$ was decreased reaction temperature to $200^{\circ}C$ with same decomposition rate. Also the appropriated cerium sulfate loadings on $Al_2O_3$ were 5~10 wt%.

Gasification Study of Datong Coal in a Bench Scale Unit of Entrained Flow Gasifier (Datong탄에 대한 Bench Scale Unit급 분류층 석탄가스화 연구)

  • Coal gasification experiments were performed to characterize the bench scaled unit of 0.5∼1.0 T/D entrained coal gasifier developed by KIER. Datong coal from China was selected for this study. The system was operated at the temperature range of 1300∼1550$^{\circ}C$, with 62.5% of coal water mixture on the basis of dry coal. Oxygen and slurry mixture were preheated prior to feeding into burner and the ratio of oxygen/coal was in the range of 0.8∼1.2. In the preparation of coal water mixture, 0.3 wt% of CWM1002 and 0.05 wt% of NaOH wire added to reduce viscosity as well as to enhance theological properties of slurry. The resultant gaseous products consist primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and minor amounts of methane. Formation of H$_2$and CO was increased, while CO$_2$was decreased as the reacting temperature being increased due to the char-CO$_2$reaction. Maximum production of H$_2$and CO occurred in the O$_2$/coal ratio of 0.9 at 1530$^{\circ}C$. Heating values of product gases were in the range of 1700∼2400 kcal/N㎥.

  • 최근, 유한한 에너지 자원의 한계와 지구 온난화 등으로 세계의 제조 산업은 새로운 국면을 맞이하고 있으며, 특히, 자동차 산업은 화석연료를 주 에너지원으로 사용한다는 점과 이 연료를 연소시킬 때 발생하는 이산화탄소가 지구 온난화의 주된 원인이 될 수 있다는 점에서 상기 문제들을 해결하기 위한 다양한 방법에 주목하고 있다. 그 중에서 자동차의 생산기술 측면에서 볼 때, 가장 중요한 이슈는 차체 경량화다. 자동차 차체는 자동차를 구성하고 있는 여러 가지 부품 중에서 약 40% 정도의 무게 비율을 차지하고 있기 때문에, 차체 경량화는 연비향상과 이산화탄소 배출가스 감소와 직접적인 관계를 가지고 있다. 다양한 차체 경량화 방법 중에서 가장 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 방법이 경량소재 적용에 의한 경량화 방법이다. 현재, 탄소섬유 강화 플라스틱과 같이 무게 절감 비율을 최대화 할 수 있는 소재들도 개발되어 일부 적용되고 있지만, 일반적으로 차체 경량화 소재로 가장 널리 사용되고 있는 소재는 알루미늄 합금이며, 이에 대한 차체 적용 비율이 점차로 높아지는 추세에 있다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 알루미늄 합금이 차체에 적용되었을 때의 장단점을 살펴보고, 알루미늄 합금을 적용한 차체 생산과정에서 유의해야 될 사항들과 이를 바탕으로 하는 생산성 극대화 방안에 대하여 고찰하였다. 먼저, 기존의 알루미늄 저항 점 용접공법의 단점을 최소화하고 대량생산 체계에 적합하도록 개발된 새로운 개념의 저항 점 용접 시스템에 대해 그 성능과 양산성을 검증하였다. 구리 전극과 알루미늄 피용접물 사이에 프로세스 테이프를 삽입하여 용접하는 이 시스템은 열전도성이 큰 알루미늄 용접부에서 저전류의 조건에서도 효과적으로 균일한 발열현상이 발생하게 하였으며, 전극 팁 드레싱 없이 모든 용접점이 항상 동일한 조건에서 용접이 이루어질 수 있도록 하였다. 용접 조건 설정에 있어서도 용접전류가 통전되는 순간에 전극 가압력을 자유로이 변형시켜 용접부 크랙 발생을 최소화할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 알루미늄의 또 다른 대표적인 접합방법인 아크용접에 있어서는 용접 입열량을 조절하여 용접변형을 최소화 할 수 있는 아크용접 시스템에 대해 양산성과 적용 타당성을 검토하였다. 와이어 송급 방향을 자유자재로 바꿀 수 있는 이 시스템의 특성에 의해 스패터를 최소화하면서 용융금속이 효과적으로 모재에 금속이행 될 수 있음을 확인하였으며, 판재, 압출재, 및 다이캐스팅재 등 다양한 차체 소재에 대한 용접 가능성 및 미그-레이저 하이브리드 용접과의 비교분석을 통하여 차체 박판 용접에서도 최소의 열변형으로 효과적으로 사용될 수 있음을 보였다.

Flame Retardant Property of PU by the Addition of Phosphorous Containing Polyurethane Oligomers (폴리우레탄을 인계화합물로 해중합한 올리고머의 난연성)

  • Used polyurethane (PU) was chemically degraded by the treatment with flame retardants such as tris(1,3-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). Analysis of FT-IR and P-NMR showed that the degraded products (DEP) contained oligourethanes. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced using the DEP as flame retardants. The flammability and thermal stability of recycled rigid polyurethane were investigated. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength of recycled polyurethane were also studied. The recycled polyurethane reduced flammability and enhanced thermal stability over intrinsic polyurethane. Mechanical strength of recycled polyurethane also shows as high as that of intrinsic polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the recycled polyurethane foams with various amounts of DEP, heat release rate (HRR) of the foam was measured by cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of recycled PU showed a uniform cell morphology as a intrinsic PU.

Study of Smoke Behavior and Differential Pressure in the Refuge Safety Area According to Damper Capacity of Smoke Control (제연댐퍼 송풍량에 따른 피난 안전 구역 차압 및 연기 거동 특성 연구)

  • In this study, we calculated the smoke movement at the fire area of the refuge floor which has the refuge safety area in case of fire in the high rise building by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of FLUENT (ver. 13.0). The buoyancy plume was applied using the temperature and flow velocity which represent 10 MW heat release rate in order to describe the fire, and the smoke movement was predicted using a species conservation equation. The pressurization system of smoke control was adopted with smoke control damper in refuge safety area, at the result, it is confirmed that the damper capacity was enough to smoke control in which the flow rate of supply was applied 25 $m^3/s$ in the case of the door at fire area opened only, and 50 $m^3/s$ in the doors at the fire area and lobby both opened case. They were satisfied in NFSC 501-A. Even though the door of fire area closed, there were smoke leakages at the gap between the door and wall. In addition, the refugee could be isolated in the fire area when the door of fire area closed during smoke control in the case of using the high damper flow rate of supply, 50 $m^3/s$. Therefore the proper damper flow rate of supply are needed in order to prevent the damage of refugee and this study proposes the suitable condition of damper capacity according to refuge scenario.

Fabrication of Porous Alumina Ceramics by Spark Plasma Sintering (방전 플라즈마 소결법에 의한 다공성 알루미나 세라믹스의 제조)

  • In order to develope the porous alumina ceramics with high strength, the pore characteristics and compressive strength were investigated in terms of relation to the conditions of spark-plasma sintering and the contents of graphite as a pore precursor. Porous alumina bodies were successfully prepared by spark-plasma sintering and burning out graphite in air. High porous bodies were fabricated by sintering at 1000${\circ}C$ for 3 min under a pressure of 30 MPa, heating rate of 80${\circ}C$/min and on-off pulse type of 12:2. For example, alumina bodies prepared by the addition of 10∼30 vol% graphite showed high porosity of 50∼57%. Also, the open porosity increased with graphite content. The relationship between pore characteristics and graphite contents could be explained by percolation model depending on cluster number and size. Porous alumina bodies prepared by the addition of 10∼30 vol% graphite showed the high compressive strength of 55∼200 MPa. This great improvement in strength was considered to be mainly due to the spark-plasma discharges and the self-heating action between particles.

Study on Restriking Transient Voltage Characteristics and Waveform Patterns of Planar Copper-Carbon Electrodes using Forms (평면형 구리 - 탄소 전극의 형태별 재기전압 특성 및 파형 패턴에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the authors measured voltage and current waveforms in real time during a serial arc discharge. The analysis results of the arc discharge radiation patterns exhibited intermittent discharge, arc growth, creation of a heat generating area, occurrence of plume, and formation of a red heat area, which proceeded in that order. When the serial arc discharge was introduced, the current and voltage waveforms exhibited periodicity as sine waves. It was also observed that a restriking transient voltage occurred when the waveform changed from positive (+) to negative (-) and vice versa. When the discharge proceeded, the amount of heat generated for 1 s and 600 s was approximately 0.317 mJ, and 190 mJ, respectively. The duration of the short circuit was approximately 1.66 ms, and in the case of the voltage waveform, it was evident that the electric potential increased to 49.9 V in the same cycle. Furthermore, when the discharge proceeded, the effective value (RMS value) of the current was approximately 1.72 A with a maximum current of approximately 2.53 A, whereas the effective value of the voltage was approximately 42.8 V with a maximum of approximately 208 V.

Fundamental Experiment on the Flow Characteristics inside the Exhaust Duct of Cone Calorimeter (콘 칼로리미터의 배기 덕트 내부 유동 특성 기초 실험)

  • In this study, the mass flow rate of the heat release rate equation, which is the major factor of the oxygen consumption method, was analyzed for the fundamental investigation of the cone-calorimeter (5 m length and 0.3 m diameter). The shapes of a completely empty inside, 3 mm pore diameter mesh and pore diameter 10 mm honeycomb with 0.76 porosity were constructed using the cone-calorimeter. To calculate the mass flow rate, four bi-directional probes and thermocouples were installed in a uniform position in the vertical direction of flow. The velocity gradient and flow perturbation were measured from the increase in Reynolds number. As the flow capacity increased, the speed gradient increased in all three shapes relative to the turbulence intensity. In addition, the deviation of extended uncertainty to the mass flow was completely low in the order of empty space, mesh (dp = 3 mm) and honeycomb (dp = 10 mm and 𝜖 = 0.76) at the 95% confidence level. The results can be used in designs to improve the flow stability of the cone calorimeter.

A Study of Emulsion Fuel of Cellulosic Biomass Oil (목본계 바이오매스오일의 에멀젼 연료화 연구)

  • Water soluble oil was obtained by pyrolysis of biomass. The characteristics of emulsified fuel by mixing water soluble oil and MDO(marine diesel oil) and engine emissions were studied with engine dynamometer. Saw dust was used as biomass. Water soluble oil was obtained by condensing of water and carbon content with pyrolysis of saw dust at $500^{\circ}C$. Emulsion fuel was obtained by emulsifying MDO and water soluble oil by the water soluble oil mixing ratio of 10 to 20% of MDO. Exhaust gas detection was performed with engine dynamometer. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the emulsion fuel, emulsion fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The heat produced from water vapour reduce the temperature of internal combustion chamber and it caused to inhibition of NOx production. It can be verified by the lower exhaust temperature of each ND-13 mode using emulsion fuel than that of MDO fuel. The NOx and smoke concentration were reduced by increasing water soluble oil content in the emulsion fuel. The power also decreased according to the increment of water soluble oil content of emulsion fuel because emulsion fuel has low calorific value due to high water content than MDO. As a result of ND-13 mode test with 20% bio oil content, it was achieved 25% reduction in NOx production, 60% reduction in smoke density, and 15% reduction in power loss.
