The self-organizing map (SOM) is a unsupervised learning method projecting high-dimensional data into low-dimensional nodes. It can visualize data in 2 or 3 dimensional space using the nodes and it is available to explore characteristics of data through the nodes. To understand the structure of data, cluster analysis is often used for nodes obtained from SOM. In cluster analysis, the optimal number of clusters is one of important issues. To help to determine it, various cluster validity indexes have been developed and they can be applied to clustering outcomes for nodes from SOM. However, while SOM has an advantage in that it reflects the topological properties of original data in the low-dimensional space, these indexes do not consider it. Thus, we propose a new cluster validity index for SOM based on connectivity between nodes which considers topological properties of data. The performance of the proposed index is evaluated through simulations and it is compared with various existing cluster validity indexes.

The purpose of this study was to document the changes in astronomical concepts for preservice and inservice elementary school teachers after being presented with the newly devised Earth Motions Centric Solar System Model. The subjects of the study were 31 preservice and 30 inservice elementary schools teachers in the Jeonbuk Province. First, the author investigated the naive theories of the subjects, and then, compared that data to the data obtained after their exposure to the model. The total number of items on the instrument for this study was 10. These items included questions about the motion of interior planets, the phases and sizes of interior planets, and the motion of exterior planets and comets. After analyzing the answers to the items before the experiment, the author was able to confirm the existence of the naive theories regarding astronomical phenomena. Also, after the experiment, the author was able to observe the conceptual change in thought of the preservice and inservice elementary school teachers. Results showed that learning through the new model had positive effects on the preservice and inservice elementary school teachers' conceptualization of the interior planets' motion, phases and sizes, and the exterior planets' motion.
This paper presents a S-band phased array antenna system for receiving LEO satellite telemetry signals. The proposed antenna, which is performed to be beam-tiled along the elevation direction, consists of 16 sub-array assemblies, 16 active circuit modules, a perpendicular feed network and a control/power unit. In order to precisely track an LEO satellite, the developed antenna is placed with its elevation axis along the projected trajectory of the satellite on the earth. The center of antenna aperture is facing to the maximum elevation angle in the LEO trajectory. The beam-tilted angles for tracking LEO satellite are obtained by calculating accurately satellite points. Satellite tracking measurements are carried out in the range of ±30° with the respect to the maximum elevation angle. The S/N ratio of 16.5 dB and the Eb/No of 13.3 dB at the maximum elevation angle are obtained from the measurements. The measured result agrees well with the pre-analyzed system margin.
The length of optical fiber in dispersion-managed link combined with optical phase conjugation to compensate for signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effect is a major factor determining the compensation effectiveness. The dispersion-managed link consists of several fiber spans in which standard single mode fiber and dispersion compensating fiber are arranged. In this paper, the compensation effect in the link that changes residual dispersion per span only by adjusting the length of one type of optical fiber, which is different in the first half link and the second half link with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC), has been investigated. It was confirmed that the best compensation for 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed signal could be obtained in the dispersion-managed link, in which the cumulative dispersion profile is symmetric around the OPC, and the cumulative dispersion amount is all positive in the first half, and all the cumulative dispersion amount is distributed negatively in the second half.
Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with optical phase conjugator (OPC) and dispersion management (DM) for compensating the distorted wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects. WDM systems considered in this research have optical links with the random distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in each single mode fiber (SMF) spans of only one half transmission section for designing the adaptive optical transmission system configurations. It is confirmed that optimal NRD is 10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -8~1 dBm under NRD = 10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by precompensation. And, it is also confirmed that optimal NRD is -10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -7.5~1 dBm under NRD = -10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by postcompensation.

Due to the increase in capacity of auxiliary machinery in power plant, the importance of energy saving has been greatly emphasized. If the speed of fans or pumps is controlled in accordance with the variation of load, large electric energy can be saved. Large capacity inverter, 2MVA GTO inverter, has been developed by operating two of 1MVA unit inverters in parallel. The parallel operation of the unit inverter is accomplished through two output transformers of which the secondary windings are connected in series. The system is composed of one control cubicle, one rectifier cubicle and 2 unit inverter cubicles. This inverter system was applied to the sea water lift pump(SLP) driven by a 6.6KV 1500KW induction motor in Seo-Inchon power plant to save the electric energy. The parallel operation of inverters by 180 degrees apart in switching frequency helps to reduce the harmonic components.
The sea layer in marine Controlled-Source Electromagnetic (mCSEM) survey changes the conventional definition of apparent resistivity which is used in the land CSEM survey. Thus, the development of a new algorithm, which computes apparent resistivity for mCSEM survey, can be an initiative of mCSEM data interpretation. First, we compared and analyzed electromagnetic responses of the 1D stratified gas hydrate model and the half-space model below the sea layer. Amplitude and phase components showed proper results for computing apparent resistivity than real and imaginary components. Next, the amplitude component is more sensitive to the subsurface resistivity than the phase component in far offset range and vice versa. We suggested the induction number as a selection criteria of amplitude or phase component to calculate apparent resistivity. Based on our study, we have developed a numerical algorithm, which computes appropriate apparent resistivity corresponding to measured mCSEM data using grid search method. In addition, we verified the validity of the developed algorithm by applying it to the stratified gas hydrate models with various model parameters. Finally, by constructing apparent resistivity pseudo-section from the mCSEM responses with 2D numerical models simulating gas hydrate deposits in the Ulleung Basin, we confirmed that the apparent resistivity can provide the information on the geometric distribution of the gas hydrate deposit.
In this paper, we analyzed the phase change of 5-triangular trihedral comer reflectors by using X-band Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GB-SAR) system. Each reflector was set as a stationary target at a different distance from the system. We obtained total 123 full-polarization images during 40 hours continuously at 20 minute interval. Results of SAR interferometric analysis showed phase changes of maximum 2 radians and followed similar pattern with atmospheric data. Through a GB-SAR phase formula that includes refractive index in the air, we performed regression analysis for refractive index as a function of atmospheric humidity, temperature and pressure. As a result, refractive index of air in X-band showed relatively high coefficient of determination with humidity and temperature (0.72 and 0.76 on average, respectively) but not so with pressure (0.34). The refractive index of air in X -band changed by 3.14\;{\times}\;10^{-5}$ during the measuring time with a humidity range of 50% ~ 90% and a temperature range of $-1^{\circ}C$ ~ $9^{\circ}C$. We expect that a total expression of refractive index of air including humidity, temperature and pressure can be calculated when more extensive data would be collected at various atmospheric conditions.
The purpose of this paper is to review the trend of research in geographical education since the launching of the Korean Geographical Society in 1945 and to suggest the areas and directions for future oriented research in geographical education. 422 articles (including 12 books) were reviewed and analized for this paper. The outputs of research in geographical education contributed in developing and improving the geographical education in primary and secondary school geography. But to achieve stable and desirable status as a subject in the school curriculum, research in geographical education has to be changed in its target areas and methods. The results and the suggestions of this study are summarized as follows: First, research in geographical education in diverse areas, especially in the areas of significance, aims and objectives, and psychology of geographical education should be preceded the revision of the school curriclum so that the results could be used as the basis information and evidences in decision making about the curriculum. Second, research in geographical education for affective domain and skill development should be implemented more actively in accordance to the trend of integration centering around the dicipline-inquiry skill and citizenship skill. More close relationship between the circles of geographical education and geography would be one of the ways to satisfy the social needs. Third, the linkage between primary and secondary school geography is crucial to the research in geographical education. Considering the sequence in human development research in geographical education for two levels of school should be conducted in more wide school-year span. Fourth, critical and prescriptive research in geographical education focusing on the individual, diciplinary, and social relevancy of the content of geographical education may be recommended. Finally, the outputs of the research in geographical education should be publicized more widely so that the rationale for justification of subject geography and geographical education may be shared with among the researchers, educational administrators, and practioners.
