The Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the study area represented by andesitic rocks occupy eastern part of the Kyeongsan Caldera. The volcanic rocks comprise andesite I, andesitic tuff, andesite II, and andesitic tuff breccia in their stratigraphic succession, and andesitic porphyry. Andesite I is distinguished from andesite II in their color, texture, phenocryst mineralogy and petrochemisty. In outcrops, andesite I is compact and dark-green, and andesite II is brick red in color and porphyritic in texture. In their phenocryst mineralogy, andesite I contains olivine phenocryst in addition to plagioclase and pyroxene which occur in both of andesites. Compared to andesite II, andesite I is higher in $SiO_2$ and $K_2O$ contents and lower in CaO, MgO, MnO, $TiO_2,\;Fe_2O_3$, and $P_2O_5$. Major elements petrochemistry shows that magma series of the volcanic rocks spread widely from calc-alkaline to alkaline series. On the other hand, immobile trace elements petrochemistry shows that the magma series is calc-alkaline without exception, suggesting that the volcanics has experienced more or less alkali enrichment after their eruption. Trace element diagrams for discrimination of tectonic setting show that the volcanics of the study area might be originated from calc-alkaline continental volcanic arc.
We report petrography, mineral chemistry, and major and trace element chemistry for rare tholeiites in Cheju island where alkalic rocks predominate. Available age data indicate that the tholeiitic magmatism was younger than 0.49Ma, possibly younger than 0.17 Ma. The tholeiites are generally fine-grained, porphyritic rock and show intergranular texture with lath-shaped plagioclase ($An_{61-46}$), orthopyroxene (bronzite) and olivine ($Fo_{78-67}$). Characteristically, two kinds of clinopyroxene (pigeonite and augite) occur only in groundmass. The tholeiites have normative quartz and show limited compositional variations ($SiO_2$=51.0-52.5 wt%; Mg#=54-60). Major and transitional metal element variations of tholeiites are distinct from those of alkaline rocks in MgO diagram, suggestingthat the two rock types cannot be simply related to differentiation process from the same magma. The ratios among $K_2O$, Rb, Ba, Nb and La are similar for both tholeiites and alkali basalts, however the ratios between the elements (P, Y and Yb) having an affinity with garnet and the above elements are higher for tholeiites than for alkali basalts. These trace element ratios suggest that the tholeiites and alkali basalts were produced by different degrees of partial melting from a similar sources material (garnet lherzolite mantle).
Modal and chemical compositions of clinopyroxnes in spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun, enclosed in Miocene alkali basalt, are important for understanding the pre-eruptive temperature condition and chemical processes such as mantle depletion and enrichment. All spinel peridotites show transitional texture between protogranular and porphyroclastic textures. Temperature ranges of spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun at 15 kb are 773∼1188℃ and 705∼1106℃, respectively. The spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun have undergone the 1∼10% and 1∼4% fractional melting, which were determined by using primitive mantle-normalized Y and Yb of clinopyroxenes. LREE enrichment patterns of clinopyroxene indicate that these rocks from both areas have undergone cryptic mantle metasomatism without new minerals.
The rocks of the five storied stone pagoda in the Jeongrimsaji temple site are 149 materials in total with porphyritic biotite granodiorite. They include pegmatite veinlet, basic xenolith and evenly developed plagioclase porphyry. This stone pagoda has comparably small fracture and cracks which are farmed in the times of rock properties, but surface exfoliation and granular decomposition are in process actively since the rocks are generally weakened from the influence of air contaminants and acid rain. Structural instability of constituting rocks in the 4th roof materials are observed to occur from distortion and tilt. Such instability is judged to threat stability of the upper part of the stone pagoda. Also, chemical weathering is operating even more as the contaminants, ferro-manganese hydroxides eluted from water-rock interaction on the rock surface. Most of the rock surface is covered with yellowish brown, dark black and light gray contaminants, and especially occur in the lower part of the roof rocks on each floor. The roof underpinning rocks are severe in surface pigmentation from manganese hydroxides and light gray contaminants. The surface of rocks lives bacteria. algae, lichen, or moss and diverse productions in colors of light gray, dark Bray and dark green. Grayish white crustose lichen grows thick on the surface with darkly discolored by fungi and algae in the first stage on basement rocks, and weeds grows wild on the upper part of each roof rocks. This stone pagoda must closely observe the movements of the upper part rock materials through minute safety diagnosis and long term monitoring for structural stability. Especially since the surface discoloration of rocks and pigmentation of secondary contaminants are severe, establishment of general restoration and scientific conservation treatment are necessary through more detailed study for this stone pagoda.
A 25-day-old, Korean indigenous calf was presented with a 10 days history of respiratory disorders and bloody diarrhea, and died. This calf was extremely unthrifty compared to others and had evidence of chronic diarrhea based on matting of feces in the hair of the tail and perineum. Ecchymotic hemorrhages were observed on multiple organs at necropsy. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection was identified by RT-PCR. The phylogenetic analysis showed that this case belonged to BVDV-2a subgroup and was related to highly pathogenic USA isolate 890 (U18059). This case provided evidence for circulation of BVDV-2 in Republic of Korea. The occurrence of BVDV-2 was also reconfirmed.
The present study was performed to observe the ultrastructure of the integument of adult Paragonimus westermani. Dogs experimentally infected with 60 metacercariae of F. westermani were autopsied 4 months after the infection. Adult p. westermani were extracted from the dogs and the fine structure was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscope. The findings are as follows: 1. Scanning electron microscopic findings showed that the spines and the papillae are distributed at whole body surface but the well developed spines or papaillae are shown around the oral sucker and ventral sucker. 2. At the end of the body, excretory pore was found, the shape was irregular. 3. Transmission electron microscopic findings showed that plasma membrane, tegument, basal lamina, connective tissue, circular muscle layer, longitudinal muscle layer. nerve axon and tegumental cell were observed. 4. In higher magnification, plasma membrance and bar-shaped granules were found at the outer surface of the tegument.
Although the Daljeon Basalt in the Pohang Basin is important for interpreting the basin evolution, its relative chronology, stratigraphic position, and isotopic age still remain controversial. In order to clear up the controversies, this study carried out detailed field investigation to determine its distribution and occurrence together with reanalysis of its previous geochemical data and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ age dating. Based upon the field investigation, the basalt occurring in the central part of the Pohang basin is composed of three main bodies and a dozen of minor dikes and sills that intruded into the Yeonil Group. Their mineral assemblages consist of phenocrysts such as olivine and clinopyroxene and fine groundmasses of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, and opaque oxide, impling the porphyritic texture of alkaline basalt. All their geochemical data also show the similar geochemical characteristics in TAS, Zr-Ti, and REE/trace elements distribution diagrams. The samples are plotted on alkalic field in the total alkali-versus-silica diagram and show similar patterns to enrichment oceanic basalt or within plate basalt in trace elements. In addition, $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ isochron age of 13.82Ma is obtained. These results indicate that the Daljeon Basalt is an alkaline intrusive rock belonging to the middle Miocene Yeonil Group.
The rock materials from the two stone heritages in the Seonbonsa temple, Gwanbong Seokjoyeoraejwasang (stone Buddha) and three-storied Stone Pagoda, show almost identical petrographic characteristics. They are greyish white porphyritic granites which mainly consist of plagioclase, alkali feldspar, quartz, biotite, hornblende, and chlorite. The rocks from the both heritages are petrographically similar to those from the outcrops of the Palgongsan granite near the temple. Modal compositions exhibit that the rocks from the stone Buddha belong to monzogranite, whereas those from the pagoda and the outcrop near the temple correspond to syeno- to monzo granite. Whole rock magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the rocks from the stone Buddha, the pagoda, and the outcrop have nearly the same susceptibility values ranging 9-16(${\times}10^{-3}\;SI$). Gamma spectrometer data obtained from these rocks also demonstrate the same value range. In conclusion the two stone heritages in the Seonbonsa temple were made of the Palgongsan granite surrounding the temple.
The purpose of this study is to identify the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of four granitic masses and clanfy for the origin and relationship among the masses. These granitic rocks are distributed in the eastern part of Yangsan fault in the Kyongsang basin, southeastern part of Korea. Based on the mineralogy and texture, the granitic rocks are divided into three facies; granodiorite, porphyritic fine-grained granite, and equigranular granite. According to the result of modal analysis, northern part and most of the southern part of Daebon granitic rocks are plotted in granodiorite field and the rest part of the xocks are plotted in granite field. These granitic rocks belong to the sub-alkaline series, and are subdivided into calc-alkaline series. The rare earth elements normalized bv chondrite show LREE is more enriched than HREE and the lowest values in O-w m- i t e and Daebon equigranular granite. The crystallization pressures and temperatures of minimum melt compositions of granitic rocks estimated from the study area are about 0.5-1 kbar and $700~820^{\circ}C$, respectively. Referring to the petrographic characteristics, geochemical data and radiogenic age data, Oyu granite was emplaced in the Paleocene, but Daebon granodiorite, Sanseo porphyritic granite, and Hoam equigranular granite are co-magmatic differentiation products, were emplaced in the Eocene.
Petrographical and petrochemical analyses for late Miocene basalts in Goseong-gun area. Gangwon province, were carried out to interpret the characteristics and the origin of magma. The basaltic rocks occurred as plug-dome in the summit of several small mountain and developed columnar jointing with pyroxene-megacryst bearing porphyritic texture. And the basalt contains xenoliths of biotite granite (basement rocks), gabbro (lower crustal origin) and Iherzolite(upper mantle origin). The basalts belong to the alkaline basalt field in TAS diagram and partly belong to picrobasalt and trachybasalt field. On the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagram f3r basalt in the Goseong-gun area. they fall into the fields for the within plate and oceanic island basalt. The characteristics of trace elements and REEs shows that primary magma for the basalt magma would have been derived from partial melting of garnet-peridotite mantle. This late Miocene basalt volcanism is related to the hot spot within the palte.
