  • Seasonal changes in the firefly (Luciola lateralis) were studied in the laboratory to understand biological characteristics. Fecundity varies with seasons; these were measures at $162.0{\pm}8.67$ in the winter, $226.9{\pm}15.84$ in the spring and $166.6{\pm}9.3$ in the summer. Seasonal change also influenced oviposition period ($6.9{\pm}0.59$ days in the winter, $16.1{\pm}1.10$ days in the spring and $8.2{\pm}0.61$ days in the summer). The firefly oviposited every $2.5{\pm}0.22$ days in the winter, $3.9{\pm}0.25$ days in the spring, and $2.3{\pm}0.14$ days in the summer. Oviposition occurred 3 times in the winter, and 4 times in the spring and summer. The number of eggs per cycle was $52.2{\pm}4.56$ and $55.9{\pm}4.38$ in winter and spring, respectively, and was lower in the summer ($42.2{\pm}3.76$). Egg period significantly differed among seasons. The life span of the firefly was $17.9{\pm}0.14$ days in the winter, $19.7{\pm}0.25$ days in the spring and $16.5{\pm}0.43$ days in the summer.

  • The appearance of digital culture swiftly has changed the culture in domestic and international arenas before and after the year 2004 and the image and animation have become two of the most important expression media in contemporary age. Among the Japanese animations that have demonstrated the rapid development of cartoon and animation in the world, the director Dakahata Isao's 'Graves of the Fireflies' that has influenced many works has been evaluated as one of the noticeable works that has a unique method and scenario dramatization in terms of producing the original novel into an animation. This study investigates the metaphor and symbolism shown in this work according to each sequence, divides the production ability in the work into three elements and applies them to the important elements such as camera, colors and mise-en-scene when the original work is depicted into image. It can be summarized in more detail as in the following: firstly, I study the rhythm of camera corresponding to the symbolism of the angle that the camera has and production; secondly, I analyze the artistic elements appeared in the process of expressing the original work into the image, especially the production for the colors and symbolism contained in them and the composition of screen. Thirdly, I analyze how effectively the atmosphere for the situations for the original work is expressed in animation with the aid of one of the image elements, mis-en-scene. It is expected that the analyzed findings will be effective as a way of overcoming the limitation of expressions that the original work in text and the study on these processes will become good examples to the relevant workers and will be the good references to the producers who are interested in the creation of animation in Korea.

  • Studies were carried out to investigate structural characteristics of the larval and adult light organs of Luciola lateralis Mot. and to observe the relation between the light organ and nerve. The larval light organs, (LLO)existed at a paired dorsal lateral positions of the 8th abdominal segment. The organ was spherical or sub-spherical in shape. There were many vacuoles around the LLO. As larva grew, the number of vacuoles increased. LLO had the muscles in its interior part and their role seemed to fix the LLO position in space. Also, there were the tracheae and tracheoles in LLO. The Adult light organs (ALO) were at the ventral portions of the 5th and 6th abdominal segments in the male, but only on the 5th abdominal segment in the female. ALO had two functional layers, i.e., photocyte and dorsal layer. Tracheal end organs existed in both layers but their arrangements were irregular. Rod-shaped photocytes and spherical photocytes were observed in the ALO of male and female, but the rod-shaped types were rarely found in the female. In the ALO of the 5th abdominal segment, two paired peripheral nerves were originated from the anterior part of the last abdominal compound ganglion. A pair of peripheral nerves were originated from the posterior part of the compound ganglion to innervate the 6th abdominal segment ALO. And LLO was innervated by a paired peripheral nerves from the last abdominal ganglion.

  • We carried out an ecological survey for Ceratovacuna japonica, which lives in bamboos, at the experimental field of National Academy of Agricultural Science, Suwon and the several natural fields in Korea from 2010 to 2011. The releasing methods of C. japonica on Pseudosasa japonica was more effective at the brushing-off method than the pining-attached method. The successful rate of releasing was the highest at green house than others such as at outdoor, vinyl green house and in a insects net conditions. The survival limit of C. japonica was closely associated with the lowest temperature ($-10^{\circ}C$) of vegetative limit of P. japonica for over wintering because of two fields of Ilsan lake park and Guri ecological park showed falling down below $-15^{\circ}C$ two times in January. It provides for a reasonable distribution information of C. japonica that is restricted to south of Han River. However, the middle of Korea has rarely fallen down below $-10^{\circ}C$. Therefore, we consider that a successful rearing of C. japonica may be the most suitable in green house condition to overcome winter period.

  • The reproductive ecology of the glowbelly, $Acropoma$ $japonicum$ was examined using 637 specimens collected monthly from January to December 2006 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The specimens ranged in standard length (cm, SL) from 2.9 to 11.4cm for female, 2.7 to 10.5cm for male. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female was highest in September and decreased until December, and the spawning season lasted from August to November. The monthly sex was not different significantly ($x^2$-test, p>0.05). The size at 50% maturity was estimated at 6.0cm SL. $A.$ $japonicum$ was multiple spawner that spawn on more than one occasion in a single spawning season, and the maximum egg diameter was 0.75mm. Fecundity (F) ranged from 12,052 to 104,246 eggs, with the mean of 38,321 eggs. The relationships between fecundity and standard length (cm, SL), body weight (g, BW) were estimated as $F=86.278SL^{2.9652}$ ($R^2$=0.7970) and $F=3036BW^{1.0081}$ ($R^2$=0.7992), respectively.

  • This study makes an attempt to appraise how much successful both (Ham-Pyung) Butterfly Festival and (Mu-Ju) Firefly Festival are in the view point of ecology-friendly effects, and based on this appraisal, searches for desirable and developmental directions of other eco-festivals. The empirical analysis of the study shows that even if the Butterfly Festival turns out to be more famous than the Firefly Festival, the latter is confirmed to be more eco-friendly than the former. The fact that the latter is more eco-friendly seems to be due to the fact that the subject matter, that is the theme, of the festival is the fireflies which are not only natural monuments but also peculiar in-site-resources specific to Mu-Ju. This fact suggests that the other eco-festivals, newly emerging ones in particular, need to find and designate in-site-resources inherent in their regions as the theme, as far as possible.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the habitat of Luciola unmunsana to understand the status of land snails, which are the larvae prey, and to evaluate the effects of larval feeding preferences and prey size for the restoration of the L. unmunsana habitat as a basis for future restoration projects. The research methods included field surveys of the habitat and laboratory experiments on feeding preferences using three types of land snails (Allopeas clavulinum kyotoense, Euphaedusa fusaniana, Pupinella rufa) observed in the habitat. Field surveys of 13 L. unmunsana habitat sites revealed a total of 24 land snail species. The experimental results regarding the larvae prey were analyzed for statistical significance of feeding preferences using Chi-square tests and independent sample t-tests. Consequently, larvae showed the highest preference for A. c. kyotoense, with statistically significant differences in feeding preferences (p<0.05). Also, statistically significant differences were observed in the size between the land snails that were eaten as prey and those that were not eaten. This research can deepen the understanding of the feeding preferences of L. unmunsana larvae and provide practical guidelines for the effective conservation and restoration strategies of the firefly habitat.
