Bio-butanol recovery by pervaporation was performed with dense and composite polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. The pervaporative behavior of the membranes was investigated as a function of operation temperature $(20{\sim}40^{\circ}C)$ and membrane thickness $(100{\sim}1{\mu}m)$ using a series of aqueous BtOH model solutions $(1{\sim}5wt%)$. With the increment of the BtOH concentration in feed, the Butanol concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity of Butanol over water and Butanol permeation flux increased. As the operating temperature of feed solutions increased, the BtOH concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity and permeation flux increased markedly. As the thickness of the PDMS membrane decreased, permeation flux increased but pervaporation selectivity decreased. These results were explained in terms of high solubility and low diffusion resistance of BtOH over water toward hydrophobic and rubbery PDMS membranes.
Oleyl alcohol, butyl butyrate, and two different ionic liquids were evaluated for the extraction of butanol from culture broth without toxic effect to cells. The tested solvents showed more than 50% extraction efficiency, and oleyl alcohol was chosen as the best extractant for butanol among the used extractants with a partition coefficient of 2.89. When oleyl alcohol was used as an extractant, more than 80% of butanol was extracted in the wide range of butanol concentrations (1-20 g/L) and pH values (pH 4-5.5). In extractive fermentation using oleyl alcohol only, there was 11% more butanol production and glucose consumption when compared to that without extractive fermentation, implicating a reduced inhibitory effect of butanol due to butanol removal to the oleyl alcohol phase. In addition, oleyl alcohol did not inhibit cell growth, while a mixture of oleyl alcohol and butyl butyrate with the volume ratio of 9:1~7:3 inhibited either butanol production or cell growth significantly due to the toxicity of butyl butyrate to cells. In conclusion, oleyl alcohol can be used as an efficient and non-toxic solvent for extractive fermentation for butanol production.

As the interest on the air-pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotiv e and fuel researchers have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward three main issues : evaporative, performance, air pollution. In addition, researcher studied the environment problems of the bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether), MTBE (Methyl Tert iary Butyl Ether) fuel contained in the fuel as octane number improver. The researchers have many dat a about the health effects of ingestion of octane number improver. However, the data support the con clusion that octane number improver is a potential human carcinogen at high doses. Based on the bio-fuel and octane number improver types (bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE, MTBE), this paper dis cussed the influence of gasoline fuel properties on the evaporative emission characteristics. Also, this p aper assessed the acceleration and power performance of gasoline vehicle for the bio-fuel property. As a result of the experiment, it was found that all the test fuels meet the domestic exhaust gas standards, and as a result of measurement of the vapor pressure of the test fuels, the bio - ethanol : 15 kPa and the biobutanol : 1.6 kPa. thus when manufacturing E3 fuel, Increasing the biobutanol content reduces evaporation gas and vapor pressure. In addition, Similar accelerating and powering performance was shown for the type of biofuel and when bio-butanol and bio-ethanol were compared accelerated perf ormance was improved by about 3.9% and vehicle power by 0.8%.

Korea, which has a high dependency on energy imports, is greatly affected by fluctuations in international oil prices. In order to offset these effects, various policies such as 'diversification of energy sources' and 'energy mix' are being pursued. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is a policy promoted for this purpose, and a compulsory mixing system is applied only to the diesel. In order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in various countries, they are concentrating on the dissemination of bio-alcohol as well as bio-diesel, and commercialization through various verification. In this study, evaluation of domestic materials and vehicles was carried out to promote domestic bio alcohol fuel. We analyzed the fuel characteristics of domestic quality standard items by mixing them with gasoline of automobile at a certain mixing ratio (0%, 3%, 6%, and 10%).
Cellulosic alcohol fermentation has recently gained more attention in the production of ethanol, butanol, and 2,3-butanediol. However, it was revealed that the process had several hurdles, such as, an expensive cost for biomass decomposition to yield fermentable sugars and a production of byproduct lignin. As an alternative for the process through biomass saccharification, the alcohol production through syngas from biomass has been studied. In this study, we reviewed acetogen and its central metabolic pathway, Wood-Ljungdahl route, capable of utilizing syngas. Furthermore, the metabolic engineering strategies of acetogen for bio-alcohol production from syngas was also reviewed with a brief perspective.
Recently, bio-butanol is being promoted as environmentally friendly sustainable energy. However, some problems are still obstacle for commercialization of bio-butanol: the development of cheap biomass and enhancement of fermentation ratio and preparation of economical separation process for fermented products. In the conventional ABE biobutanol fermentation process, organic acids with acetone, butanol, and ethanol are produced. Therefore, it is necessary to study phase equilibrium data and mixture properties for the design and operation of separation process. However, there is lack of design data for organic acids except acetic acid contained system. In this study, therefore, binary solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) and mixture properties: the excess molar volumes ($V^E$), molar refraction deviation (${\Delta}R$) and deviation of viscosity (${\Delta}v$) at 298.15 for $C_3-C_6$ organic acid were reported. The experimental SLE data were correlated with the NRTL and UNIQUAC activity coefficient model with less than 0.5 K of root mean square deviation (RMSD). In addition, $V^E$, ${\Delta}R$ and ${\Delta}v$ for the same binary systems were satisfactorily fitted using the Redlich-Kister polynomial with less than ca. 0.004 standard deviation.
The synthesis of bio polyol from renewable resources has attracted attention in recent years. In particular, it is important to take advantage of bio polyols in the synthesis of polymers. In this study, a series of dimethylformamide (DMF) based polyurethanes were synthesized using polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol (PO3G: polytrimethylene ether glycol prepared from 1, 3-propanediol produced by fermentation from corn sugar), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butandiol (BD). The properties of prepared polyurethane films and the cell structure of wet type artificial leather were investigated. As the bio polyol content increased, the tensile strength of polyurethane films decreased, however, the elongation at break increased significantly. As a result of thermal characteristics analysis, the glass transition temperature of polyurethanes increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol. As a result of comparing the cell characteristics of wet type artificial leathers prepared in this study, it was found that the number and uniformity of cells formed in the artificial leather samples increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol in polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol. From these results, it was found that DMF-based polyurethane containing an appropriate amount of bio polyol could be used for wet type artificial leather. The bio textile analysis system according to ASTM standard was used to measure the bio carbon content of polyurethane. The content of bio carbon increased proportionally with the increase of bio polyol content used in polyurethane synthesis.

The increased concern for the security of the oil supply and the negative impact of fossil fuels on the environment, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, has put pressure on society to find renewable fuel alternatives. Compared to the traditional biofuel, ethanol, higher alcohols offer advantage as gasoline substitutes because of their higher energy density and lower hygroscopicity. For this reason, microbial fermentation is known as potential producers for sustainable energy carriers. In this study, bacterial responses including cellular and molecular toxicity were studied in three different microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli, Clostridium acetobutylicum, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, it was analyzed specific stress responses caused by ethanol and buthanol using four different stress responsive genes, i.e. fabA, grpE, katG and recA. The expression levels of these genes were quantified by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-PCR. It was found that four genes have shown different responsive patterns when E. coli cultures were under stressful conditions caused by ethanol and buthanol, respectively. Therefore, in this study, the stress responsive effects caused by these alcohols and the extent of each stress response can be analyzed using the expression levels and patterns of different stress responsive genes.
In this study, pervaporation performances of water/methanol and water/butanol mixture were evaluated using zeolite 4A membranes manufacutred by FINETECH by experimental works and numerical modeling. Permeation and separation characteristics, such as flux and separation factor, were analyzed by gas chromatography (TCD) and liquid nitrogen traps. Experiments have shown that water is selectively separated from a mixture of water and methanol (separation factor up to approximately 250) and water and butanol (separation factor up to approximately 1,500). Generalized Maxwell Stefan (GMS) theory was implemented to predict pervaporation behaviors of water/alcohol mixtures and diffusional coefficients of zeolite layer were obtained through parameter estimation using $MATLAB^{(R)}$ optimization toolbox. Since the pore size of zeolite 4A are much larger than kinetic diameter of water molecules and smaller than those of methanol and butanol, zeolite 4A membranes can be applied to in situ water removal process such as membrane reactors or hybrid reaction-dehydration process.

A comparative evaluation of engine cleanliness was performed on the transport gasoline blended with bio- alcohols, and this study was considered to achieve the aim of greenhouse gas reduction in Korea. In particular, the fuel blended with bio-ethanol and bio-butanol showed the best engine cleaning performance both on combustion chamber deposits and intake valve deposits. The deposit control gasoline additive was effective to remove intake valve deposits. In contrast, the amount of combustion chamber deposits were tend to increase even though fuels blended with bio-alcohols were used. In overall, fuels blended with bio-alcohols, compared to fossil fuels, still showed outstanding performance in terms of engine cleanliness.
