  • Chemical properties such as heat of formation and density of methylnitroimidazole derivatives were predicted and analyzed by using density functional theory (DFT). Successive addition of energetic nitro groups into an imidazole ring increases both the heat of formation and the density. Using the chemical property values computed by DFT, explosive performance was analyzed with the Cheetah program, and compared with those of TNT, RDX, and HMX, which are currently used widely in military systems. When both C-J pressure and detonation velocity were used as explosive performance, methyldinitroimidazole derivatives show better performance than TNT, while methyltrinitroimidzole is almost close to RDX. Since methylnitroimidazole derivatives have a good merit, i.e. low melting point for melt loading, they are forecasted to be used widely in various military and civilian application.

  • This paper proposes a GPU-based modeling and rendering of 3D clouds using procedural functions. The formation of clouds is based on modified noise function made with fbm(Fractional Brownian Motion). Those noise values turn into densities of droplets of liquid water, which is a critical parameter for forming the three different types of clouds. At the rendering stage, the algorithm applies the ray marching technique to decide the colors of cloud using density values obtained from the noise function. In this process, all lighting attenuation and scattering are calculated by physically based manner. Once we have the clouds, they are blended on the sky, which is also rendered physically. We also make the clouds moving in the sky by the wind force. All algorithms are implemented and tested on GPU using GLSL.

  • Spatial distribution of void space in concrete materials strongly affects mechanical and physical behaviors. Therefore, the identification of characteristic void distribution helps understand material properties and is essential to estimate the integrity of material performance. The 3D micro CT (X-ray microtomography) is implemented to examine and to quantify the void distribution of a lightweight aggregate concrete using an image analysis technique and probabilistic approach in this study. The binarization and subsequent stacking of 2D cross-sectional images virtually create 3D images of targeting void space. Then, probability distribution functions such as two-point correlation and lineal-path functions are applied for void characterization. The lightweight aggregates embedded within the concrete are individually analyzed to construct the intra-void space. Results shows that the low-order probability functions and the density distribution based on the 3D micro CT images are applicable and useful methodology to characterize spatial distribution of void space and constituents in concrete.

  • Lately there has been much theoretical and applied interest in linear models with non-normal heavy tailed error distributions. Starting Zellner(1976)'s study, many authors have explored the consequences of non-normality and heavy-tailed error distributions. We consider hierarchical models including selection models under a skewed heavy-tailed e..o. distribution proposed originally by Chen, Dey and Shao(1999) and Branco and Dey(2001) with Dirichlet process prior(Ferguson, 1973) in order to use a meta-analysis. A general calss of skewed elliptical distribution is reviewed and developed. Also, we consider the detail computational scheme under skew normal and skew t distribution using MCMC method. Finally, we introduce one example from Johnson(1993)'s real data and apply our proposed methodology.

  • Computational material science as an application of Density Functional Theory (DFT) to the discipline of material science has emerged and applied to the research and development of energy materials and electronic materials such as semiconductor. However, there are a few difficulties, such as generating input files for various types of materials in both the same calculating condition and appropriate parameters, which is essential in comparing results of DFT calculation in the right way. In this tutorial status report, we will introduce how to create crystal structures and to prepare input files automatically for the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) and Gaussian, the most popular DFT calculation programs. We anticipate this tutorial makes DFT calculation easier for the ones who are not experts on DFT programs.

  • It is often needed to generate random numbers from truncated t-distributions to carry out Bayesian inferences, especially in Monte Carlo integration for estimation of posterior densities of constrained parameters. However, when the restricted area is an extreme tail area with a small probability most existing random generation methods are not efficient. In this paper, we propose an efficient acceptance-rejection method to generate random numbers from extreme tail areas of a t-distribution. Using some simulation results, we compare the proposed algorithm with other popular methods.

  • The accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system(FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated that by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In the case that an earthquake load is defined with probabilistic characteristics, the corresponding response of the structure with FDS has probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake loads generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Finally, coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression analysis of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally the correlation between PDFs and statistical response distribution is presented.

  • Laboratory experiments were undertaken in mixing chamber to study the water-in-oil emulsion formation tendency, stability and formation rate of 16 crude oils. Arabian, Iran, Dubai, Isthmus and Daekyung crudes showed high emulsion formation tendency and had water contents of 80-90%. Emulsions of crude oils of middle East were very stable, while Isthmus and Daekyung sudes formed unstable emulsion. Emulsion formation tendency rate, and stability showed significant correlations with asphaltene content of crude oil. To evaluate the possibility of preventing mousse formation, inhibition ability of several dispersants and demulsifier was tested. They inhibited mousse formation at 0.1-0.2% concentrations (v/v). Emulsion inhibition by chemical treatment delayed the time of formation, but did not decrease water content. Demulsifying ability of dispersants and demulsifier was tested because biscous emulsion causes formidable problems in skimming, pumping and recovery operation. British demulsifier Alcohol 0 showed excellent emulsion breaking efficiency at 0.1% of emulsion Vol..

  • Intrusion detection system(IDS) has recently evolved while combining signature-based detection approach with anomaly detection approach. Although signature-based IDS tools have been commonly used by utilizing machine learning algorithms, they only detect network intrusions with already known patterns, Ideal IDS tools should always keep the signature database of your detection system up-to-date. The system needs to generate the signatures to detect new possible attacks while monitoring and analyzing incoming network data. In this paper, we propose a new outlier cluster detection algorithm with density (or influence) function, Our method assumes that an outlier is a kind of cluster with similar instances instead of a single object in the context of network intrusion, Through extensive experiments using KDD 1999 Cup Intrusion Detection dataset. we show that the proposed method outperform the conventional outlier detection method using Euclidean distance function, specially when attacks occurs frequently.
