  • A shallow high-resolution seismic reflection survey was carried out at the Mineopo tidal flat on the western coast of Korea. The purpose of the survey was to investigate shallow sedimentary structure of the tidal flat associated with the recent sea level change. A total of 795 shots were generated at 1 m interval from a 5-kg hammer source and recorded on 48 channels of 100 Hz geophones along two mutually perpendicular profiles. The water-saturated ground condition resulted in suppressed ground rolls by significantly decreasing rigidity. In addition, seismic velocities over 1500 m/s provided easy segregation of reflected arrivals from lower velocity noise. As a consequence, seismic sections from the study area show significantly higher resolution and signal to noise ratio than conventional land seismic sections. The tidal flat consists of 5 sedimentary sequences above acoustic basement. The seismic sections reveal the continuous structure of the tidal flat formed in association with sea level rise during the Holocene.

  • Fed on commercial flounder diet at 20, 23 and $26^{\circ}C$ in semiclosed culture system for 32 weeks, the juvenile red drum (1.2 g) showed linear increase in daily feeding rate (DFR), growth (g/fish) and specific growth rate (SGR) with increasing temperature. In the second experimental series, the young red drum (214 g), cultured at densities of 2.16, 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ in flow-through tanks at water temperatures from 12.3 to $27.2^{\circ}C$ for 25 weeks, grew faster at the stocking density of 2.16 kg/$m^3$ than at the densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ the difference in growth observed at the stocking densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ was not significant. The DFR and SGR were also significantly higher for the density group of 2.16 kg/$m^3$. Briefly, growth of the red drum increased with increasing tested range of temperature and was also faster with decreasing stocking density. However, the total growth (g/tank) increased with increasing stocking density.

Although deposition is largely characterized by the transgressive sedimentary facies resulting from sea level rise, erosional surfaces are well-resolved within the sequences.

  • This study is an analysis of residual fatty acid of the unidentified 26 fish bone samples which were excavated from Bupchon-ri in Wonju, Kangwon province. The purpose of this study is to identify fish kind by comparing the residual fatty acid analysis with the reference data of croaker, shark, herring and weakfish. Fatty acid was separated by gas chromatography and distribution pattern was analyzed by calculating composition of each sample. Principal component analysis(PCA), one of multivariate analysis method was used to understand fatty acid distribution data.

  • The relationship between the fishing grounds of Buse, Pseudosciaena crocea (Richardson), and oceanographic condition in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is studied on the basis of the data of the catches of stow net fishery (Fisheries Research and Development Agency, $1967{\sim}1979$) and the oceanographic observation data. The main fishing grounds of the Buse was concentrated in southwestern area of Cheju island and the best catch was in April. CPUE was less than 50 kg/haul in the most pare of fishing grounds, there-fore the conditions of fishing grounds generally were poor and coefficients of variance were also large. In the main fishing period, April, the fishing grounds were generally distributed in colder region of $8^{\circ}C$ through $10^{\circ}C$ isotherm at 50 m depth, than Yellow croaker and Gangdali which were distributed between $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$.

  • We investigated the relative growth and squamation of larvae and juveniles of cultured Larimichthys polyactis. Analysis of the relative growth of larvae and juveniles showed that their preanal length, head length, eye diameter, body depth, and snout length increased with growth. There was no significant chage in the relative growth. The ratio of preanus length to standard length (SL) increased rapidly until SL was approximately 12 mm, and then increased gradually. Cycloid scales first appeared on the lateral line, progressed to the abdominal cavity at 15.13 mm SL, and expanded to the occipital region, base of pectoral fin, and ventral region of the eye at 17.82 mm SL. At 18.03 mm SL, scales formed on the cheek, and those at the base of pectoral fin and in the abdominal cavity were connected to each other. At 19.06 mm SL, major part of the head was covered by scales, except near the lower jaw. Cycloid scales on the lateral line changed to ctenoid scales at the range of 31.71-32.24 mm SL, and those on the nape changed at the range of 69.02-70.84 mm SL. Our results may help to establish conservation and management strategy for Larimichthys polyactis aquaculture.

  • This study investigated the digital color profiles corresponding to different maturity stages and levels of brown croaker Miichthys miiuy specimens collected from the Southern Sea of South Korea. Maturity stages were determined using photomicrographs of ovarian developmental phases, which were compared with digital color values. Brown croaker specimens ranged from 24 to 81 cm in standard length; mature ovaries were predominantly observed in specimens that exceed 40 cm in length. Monthly ovary color values were primarily concentrated in the 1st and 4th quadrants, with both a* and b* values falling within a range of ±15 centered on the origin. Similarly, the testes color values were predominantly situated in the 4th quadrant, with a* and b* values ranging from -5 to 15 and 10 to 14, respectively. While the color values of the mature and spawning stages overlapped within a narrow range, distinguishing between them required both the color value and monthly color value distribution to be considered. Thus, this study underscores the efficacy of digital color measurements for assessing brown croaker gonad maturity, and provides more quantitative insights compared to subjective visual assessments by humans.

  • The sciaenid species, which has swimbladder, generates sounds by vibrating in its length wards when spawning or getting stimulus from something else. This research analyzed on sound frequency characteristics relatives to their swimbladder length of three sciaenid species, yellow croaker(Larimichthys polyactis), brown croaker(Miichthys miiuy), and white flower croaker(Nibea albiflora). As results, the dominant frequency for yellow croaker ranged over 38.08 to 141.60Hz in wide frequency band, and the averaged pulse duration expressed in $280.3{\pm}156.0ms$. For brown croaker, the dominant frequency ranged in 49.80 to 59.57Hz, and the averaged pulse duration was $129.1{\pm}36.9ms$. Moreover, the dominant frequency of white flower croaker ranged in 73.24 to 86.91Hz, and the averaged pulse duration was $88.0{\pm}15.9ms$, it has shorter pulse duration than any two species. Therefore, the dominant frequency relatives to swimbladder length of sciaenidae showed that it had widely resonant characteristics and long pulse duration as in shorter swimbladder length. Additionally, for white flower croaker, we could confirm their behavior and sounds in response to production of recorded sounds using underwater speaker.

  • This article examined the different types of Jeonuhwa as recorded in 16 royal palace studies from the Joseon dynasty (1392-1909). The ingredients used in Jeonuhwa during the Joseon dynasty were categorized as follows: 16.0% for gray mullet(秀魚) and fish(生鮮), 14.2% each for liver and cow stomach, 12.3% for sea cucumber(海蔘), 4.7% each for crab(蟹), clam(生蛤), and chunyup(千葉), 3.9% each for pork meat(豬肉), octopus, 2.8% each for oyster(石花), pheasant(生雉), and chicken(鷄), 2.0% each for croaker(民魚), and brain (骨), 0.9% each for duck(鴨子), pigeon(山鳩), dobi(都飛), snapper, white fish(白魚), mussel(紅蛤), haeran(蟹卵), quail(鶉鳥), egg(鷄卵), and sesame(實荏子). This observation may be associated with commercial industrial development that prevailed during the late Joseon dynasty. Further studies will be conducted on recipes and ingredients recorded in Euigwe in order to develop a standardized recipe for Jeonuhwa.
