The fracture toughness can be measured by the two testing methods using chevron-notched specimen according to the ISRM Working Group of Commission of Testing Methods. They are chevron bend (CB) test and short rod (SR) test. In this study, the suggested methods (Level I tests) were conducted on the CB and SR specimens of Chuncheon granite. In addition. the J-integral analysis was combined with an acoustic emission technique to determine the fracture toughness. The results from two telling methods were analyzed in terms of the anisotropy and the acoustic emission characteristics.
The Micromechanics test is new test method which uses comparatively smaller specimen than that required in conventional material tests. There are several methods, such as small-specimen creep test, the continuous indentation test, and small punch(SP) test. Among them, the small punch(SP) test method has been applied to many evaluation fields, such as a ductile-brittle transition temperature, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, and fracture properties of advanced materials like FGM or MMC. In this study, the small punch(SP) test is performed to evaluate the mechanical properties at high/low temperature from $-196^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$ and the material degradation for virgin and aged materials of 9Cr1MoVNb steel which has been recently developed. The ${\Delta}P/{\Delta}{\delta}$ parameter defined a slope in plastic membrane stretching region of SP load-displacement curve decreases according to the increase of specimen temperature, and that of aged materials is higher than the virgin material in all test temperatures. And the material degradation degrees of aged materials with $630^{\circ}C$ -500hrs and $630^{\circ}C$ -1000hrs are $36^{\circ}C$ and $38^{\circ}C$ respectively. These behaviors are good consistent with the results of hardness($H_v$) and maximum displacement(${\delta}_{max}$).
Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, rock slope and many other practical problems in rock engineering. But a measuring method for the fracture toughness of rock, one of the mort important parameters in fracture mechanics as an intrinsic property of rock, has not been yet well established. To obtain mode I rock fracture toughness, the more favorable disc-typed specimens such as CCNBD, SCB, chevron-notched SCB and BDT were used in this study. Rock fracture toughness under mixed-mode and mode II conditions was measured by using the STCA applied to the CCNBD specimen. Size effects such as specimen thickness, diameter and notch length on fracture toughness were investigated. From the mixed-mode results, fracture envelops were obtained by applying various regression curves. The mixed-mode results were also compared with three mixed-mode failure criteria. In each fracture toughness test, acoustic emission was measured to get the data for determining the load levels of different crack propagation patterns.

Microcracking of type 304 stainless steel at $593^{\circ}C(1,100^{\circ}F)$ has been studied, in particular, initiation, growth, and coalescence of fatigue and creep microcracks on smooth specimens and small notch specimens via surface replicas and photomicrographs. Quantitative information, such as, initiation period, growth, and coalescence behavior, statistical distributions of crack length, density of cracks, distribution patterns and crack growth properties, were obtained. From this study, the fracture process, fatigue life, and creep life prediction characterized by the growth of surface microcracks have been analysed by a new approach unifying the conventional approaches based on the final fracture of materials with the fracture mechanics approach. Knowledge of these parameters is critical for the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue and creep life assessment, and the damage evaluation of structures at elevated temperature.
The comparative study using the lab-scale experiment and the discrete element analysis is attempted to analyze the cross-anisotropic elasticity of granular soils. The lab-scale experiment consists of the small stress-controlled triaxial cyclic tests and the bender element tests. In the discrete element analysis the simulations of lab-scale cyclic tests are conducted in the various directions. Good agreement between the experimental data and the simulation on the elastic properties in the axial and shear directions confirms the usefulness of the discrete element method. The comparative analysis of the difference in the experimental data and the simulation of radial cyclic tests shows that the discrete element method can successfully be used to check the reasonable magnitude of each measurement in the experiments.
Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to various fields of rock and civil engineering. But most researches covered mode I behavior, though mode II behavior is dominant in rock engineering. Until now, there is only one ISRM suggested method for mode II toughness of rock. A new SCC (Short Core in Compression) mode II toughness test method was developed considering 1) application of confining pressure, 2) easiness of notch creation, 3) utilization of existing equipment, 4) simple test procedure. The stress intensity factors were determined by 3D finite element method considering line and distributed loading conditions. The tests with granite specimens were carried out using MTS 815 rock test system with a loading rate of 0.002 mm/s. The mean value of mode II fracture toughness of granite showed $2.33MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. Mode I toughness of the same granite was $1.12MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, determined by Brazilian disk test and $K_{IIC}/K_{IC}=2.08$. The smooth fracture surface with rock powder formation also supported mode II behavior of SCC method. The SCC method can be used for the determination of mode II fracture toughness of rocks based on the current results.

This research is described on the applicability of a electrochemical techniques for evaluating nondestructive material degradation with various polarization characteristics for Cr-Mo-V steel. The applied electrochemical technique is anodic polarization test which are widely used to evaluate the corrosion rate and/or sensitization at depleted zone of strengthening elements mainly caused by thermal experience for stainless steels. The evaluation of material degradation is performed by small punch test which has been well known as micromechanics test method using specimen size of $10{\times}10{\times}0.5mm$. The 1,000hrs aged material at $630^{\circ}C$ shows the highest material degradation$({\Delta}[DBTT]_{SP})$, but the 2,000hrs and 3,000hrs aged materials show the decrease of ${\Delta}[DBTT]_{SP}$ as aging time increases. It is observed that the difference of current density $({\Delta}I_{FP}\;and\;{\Delta}I_{SP})$.

In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.

Interfacial evaluation and durability of Jute and Hemp fibers/polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated. Moisture content of various treated conditions were measured by thermogravimetic analyzer (TGA). After boiling water test, mechanical properties and IFSS between Jute, Hemp fibers and PP matrix decreased. On the other hand, work of adhesion increased due to swelled fibril by water. Surface energies of Jute and Hemp fibers before and after boiling water test were obtained using dynamic contact angle measurement. IFSS was not always consistent with thermodynamic work of adhesion. In boiling water case, since Jute and Hemp fibers could be swelled by water, surface area and moisture infiltration space increased. Environmental effect on microfailure modes of Jute or Hemp fibers and Jute or Hemp fibers/PP composites were obtained by observing via optical microscope and by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) events and their AE parameters. After boiling water test, unlike Hemp fiber, microfailure process of Jute fiber could occur due to low tensile strength by swelled fibril. In addition, AE events occurred more and AE amplitude and energy became lower than those of before boiling water test.

The local cyclic strain distribution near the crack tip has been investigated by the fine Dot Grid Strain Measurement Method, which had been suggested strain measurement method to resolve experimental difficulties by authors. It has been found that the magnitude of the local cyclic strain distribution(.DELTA..epsilon.$_{eq}$ )near a crack tip has been varied by the applied cyclic load level and material, but the shape of the local cyclic strain distribution near the crack tip has been experimentally scrarcely altered : that is .DELTA..epsilon.$_{eq}$ = .DELTA.A.f(.theta.). $r^{-1}$ . Consequently, the local cyclic strain field near the crack tip could be favorably characterized by a single parameter fatigue strain intensity factor .DELTA.A. In addition, with the viewpoint that .DELTA.A depends on material and load level, .DELTA.A has been applied to evaluate the fatigue crack propagation rate and usefulness of the result has been considered. As a result, it has been ascertained that .DELTA.A has been a useful parameter to evaluate the fatigue crack propagation rate.
