  • This study has been made to investigate the stress distribution around defects and inclusions that behave as stress concentrators. The stress distribution and interation effects around defects and inclusions was analyzed using Finite Element Method. The results are as follows;(1) Maximum stress point in case of $E_I/E_M>1$($E_I$:elasticity modulus forthe inclusion, $E_M$/:elasticity modulus for the base material)is the vertical point with respect to force direction and in case of $E_I/E_M<1$ it is the parallel point along the hole edge. (2) Interaction effects of ${\sigma}_y$ for the inclusion side is larger than the defect side when the interval between inclusion and defect is near. (3) stress interation effects is large if the difference of ${\sigma}_y$ is small and it is small if the difference of ${\sigma}_y$ is large for the case that the interval between inclusion and defect whose size and property are different is near.

  • This study is concerned with dynamic characteristics of a circular ring with a concentrated mass attached. The equations of motion are set up and are solved by using Laplace transformation. The ratio of a concentrated mass to the mass of circular ring is used as a parameter. Experiment was performed by employing impulse test and the results show good agreement with those of analysis. The results of this study can be utilized in vibrational analysis of axisymmetric shells with slight asymmetries.

  • One of the challenging tasks in visual inspection using CCD camera is to identify surface defects in an image with complex textured backgeound. In microscopic view, the surface of real objects shows regular or random textured patterns. In this paper, we present a visual inspection algorithm to extract abnormal surface defects in an image with textured background. The algorithm uses the space and frequency information at the same time by introducing the Dominant Frequency Map(DFM) which can describe the frequency characteristics of every small local region of an input image. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method through a series of real experiments for a 14" TV CRT mold. The method successfully identifies a variety of infinitesimal defects, whose size is larger than $50\mu\textrm{m}$, of the mold. The experimental results show that the DFM based method is less sensitive to the environmental changes, such as illumination and defocusing, than conventional vision techniques.ques.

  • The components with the circular cross section have the symmetric combination parts for rotating balance and the crack emanates from the symmetric combination parts. The symmetric cracks from symmetric combination parts make a decrease in the component fatigue life more than single crack. In this study, to estimate the behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed using rotary bending tester on the specimen with a symmetric defects in circular cross section. The material used in this study is Ni-Cr-Mo steel alloy. Under the same stress, the result from the rotary bending fatigue test turned out that the symmetric cracks made a decrease in the fatigue life by 35% more than single crack and the relation between log a and cycle ratio $N/N_f$ obtained linearly.

  • This study has been made to investigate into the relation between fatigue crack behavior and ferrite grain size. As experimental observation of the low-carbon steel specimen with the drilled micro-hole under rotating bending stress was made to accomplish this investigation. Obtained results are as follows; (1) The fatigue limit of micro-hole depends upon the magnitude of ferrite grain size, as indicated by the Hall-Petch formula. (2) The fatigue crack occurring around the micro-hole is of shear type, and the frequency of fatigue crack initiation depends upon the ferrite grain size. (3) The magnitude of ferrite grain size affects the behavior of fatigue crack propagation up to the crack size of 0.3mm. The effect, however, is negligible for the crack size larger than 0.3mm.

  • When a crystal is grown by FZ process, the melt zone is located at between the solid of upper and lower side and is kept by the solid-liquid interface tension. On the surface of the melt zone, a surface tension gradient is occured by the difference of temperature and solute concentration, it is the driving force of marangoni flow. The crystal even in the steady state growth can become imperfect for the dislocation distribution and the solute concentration in the peripheral region of the crystal are higher than those in the inner part and the probability of the formation of the defects such as voids, bubble penetration, secondary phase creation and crack is high near the solid-liquid interface. This is because the solid -liquid interface becomes irregular because of the local variation of temperature in that region due to marangoni convection.

  • Fatigue tests were carried out at high temperature on a Cr-Mo-V steel in order to assess the fatigue life of components used in power plants. The characteristics of high temperature fatigue were divided in terms of cycle-dependent fatigue and time-dependent fatigue, each crack propagation rate was examined with respect to fatigue J-integral range, .DELTA. J$_{f}$and creep J-integral range, .DELTA. J$_{c}$. The fatigue life was evaluated by analysis of J-integral value at the crack tip with a dimensional finite element method. The results obtained from the present study are summarized as follows : The propagation characteristics of high temperature fatigue cracks are determined by .DELTA. J$_{f}$for the PP(tensile plasticity-compressive plasticity deformation) and PC(tensile plasticity - compressive creep deformation) stress waveform types, and by .DELTA. J$_{c}$for the CP(tensile creep- compressive plasticity deformation) stress waveform type. The crack propagation law of high temperature fatigue is obtained by analysis of J-integral value at the crack tip using the finite element method and applied to examine crack propagation behavior. The fatigue life is evaluated using the results of analysis by the finite element method. The predicted life and the actual life are close, within a factor of 2.f 2.f 2.

  • In this paper, a magnetic flux leakage(MFL) based steel bar damage detection was first researched to quantify the signals from damages on the wire rope. Though many researches inspecting damages using a MFL method was proceeded until the present, the researches are at the level that diagnose whether damages are or not. This has limitation to take measures in accordance with the damage level. Thus, a MFL inspection system was modeled using a finite element analysis(FEM) program dealing with electromagnetism problems, and a steel bar specimen was adopted as a ferromagnetic object. Then, an experimental study was also carried out to verify the simulation results with a steel bar which has same damage conditions as the simulation. The MFL signals was nearly not affected by the increase of the inspection velocity, and the magnitudes of the signals are not identical according to the change of the defect width even the defects have same depth. On the basis of the analysis, the signal properties from the damages were extracted to classify the type of damages, and it could be confirmed that classification of damages using extracted signal properties is feasible.

  • This paper discusses the feasibility of ultrasonic C-scan technique for nondestructive evaluation of spot weld quality. Ultrasonic evaluation for spot weld quality was performed by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of the corona bond from nugget, preliminary infinitesimal gap experiment by newton ring is tried in order to set up the optimum ultrasonic test condition. Ultrasonic image data obtained were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be measured with the accuracy of 1.0mm, and voids included in nugget can be detected to $10{\mu}m$ extent with simplicity and accuracy. Finally, it was found that it is necessary to make a profound study of definite discrimination of corona bond from nugget and the approach of quantitative evaluation of nugget diameter by utilizing the various image processing techniques.
