  • A full three-dimensional thermo-coupled rigid-viscoplastic finite element method and the currently developed microstructural evolution system which includes semi-empirical equations suggested by different research groups were used together to form an integrated system of process and micro- structure simulation of hot rolling. The distribution and time histroy of the momechanical variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate, and time during pass and between passes were obtained from the finite element analysis of multipass hot rolling processes. The distribution of metallurgical variables were calculated on the basis of instantaneous thermomechanical data. For the verification of this method the evolution of microstructure in plate rolling and shape rolling was simulated and their results were compared with the data available in the literature. Consequently, this approach makes it possible to describe the realistic evolution of microstructure by avoiding the use of erroneous average value and can be used in CAE of multipass hot rolling.

  • The fracture process zone in concrete is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important roles. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to toughness induced by microcracking, so that the bridging is dominani: mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. Fracture mechanics does work for concrete provided that the fracture process zone is being considered, so that the development of model for the fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended rnacrocrack with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve. Two finite element techniques are shown for the analysis of progressive cracking in concrete based on the discrete crack approach: one with crack element, the other without crack element. The advantage of the technique with crack element is that it dees not need to update the mesh topology to follow the progressive cracking. Numerical results by the techniques are demonstrated.

  • The objective of this study is to predict the structural characteristics of a heat exchanger mounted on an aircraft engine using finite element analysis. The plastic fracture and life of the heat exchanger were estimated by a thermo-mechanical analysis. Tensile tests were conducted under high temperature conditions (700, 800, 900, 1000 K) using five specimens to obtain the mechanical properties of the Inconel 625 tubes. To assess the structural characteristics of the heat exchanger, the full and partial models were applied under the operating conditions given by the thermo-mechanical and inertial load. As a result, the case, tubesheet, flange, and mounting components have a reasonable safety margin to the allowable stress assuming a fatigue strength of Inconel 625 of 10000 cycles under 1000 K.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

  • Aircraft engines are exposed to high temperatures, high pressures, and stress caused by the rotation of the turbine shaft during flight. These loads can result in microcracks both on the inside and outside surfaces of the structure. Consequently, this can lead to structural defects and negatively impact the lifespan of the parts. To proactively prevent these defects, a finite element analysis is carried out to identify cracks. However, this process is time-consuming and requires significant effort due to the repetitive nature of crack modeling. This study aims to develop a crack modeling method based on the finite element model. To achieve this, the Constrained Delaunay Triangulation (CDT) technique is employed to triangulate the space while considering limitations on point connections. The effectiveness of this method is validated by comparing stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical cracks in plates and cylindrical vessels. This approach proves to be a valuable tool for crack analysis studies.

  • In this paper, a coarse lunar soil model is developed using discrete element method and its computed physical properties are compared with those of the actual lunar soil for its validation. The surface of the actual moon consists of numerous craters and rocks of various sizes, and it is covered with fine dry soil which seriously affects the landing stability of the lunar lander. Therefore, in consideration of the environment of the lunar regolith, the lunar soil is realized using discrete element method. To validate the coarse model of lunar soil, the simulations of the indentation test and the direct shear test are performed to check the physical properties(indentation depth, cohesion stress, internal friction angle). To examine the performance of the proposed model, the drop simulation of finite element model of single-leg landing gear is performed on proposed soil models with different particle diameters. The impact load delivered to the strut of the lander is compared to test results.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the stress distribution of mandibular molar restoration supported by the implants with external hex and internal taper abutment connection design. Materials and Methods: Models of external connection (EXHEX) and internal connection (INCON) implants, corresponding abutment/crowns, and screws were developed. Supporting edentulous mandibular bony structures were designed. All the components were assembled and a finite element analysis was performed to predict the magnitude and pattern of stresses generated by occlusal loading. A total of 120 N static force was applied both by axial (L1) and oblique (L2) direction. Results: Peak von Mises stresses produced in the implants by L2 load produced 6 - 15 times greater than those by L1 load. The INCON model showed 2.2 times greater total amount of crown cusp deflection than the EXHEX model. Fastening screw in EXHEX model and upside margin of implant fixture in INCON model generated the peak von Mises stresses by oblique occlusal force. EXHEX model and INCON model showed the similar opening gap between abutment and fixture, but intimate sealing inside the contact interface was maintained in INCON model. Conclusion: Oblique force produced grater magnitudes of deflection and stress than those by axial force. The maximum stress area at the implant was different between the INCON and EXHEX models.
