Organic Carbon Distribution and Budget in the Pinus densiflora Forest at Mt. Worak National Park (월악산 소나무림의 유기탄소 분포 및 수지)

  • Organic carbon distribution and carbon budget of a Pinus densiflora forest in the Songgye valley of Mt. Worak National Park were investigated. Carbon in above and below ground standing biomass, litter layer, and soil organic carbon were measured from May 2011 through April 2012. For the estimation of carbon budget, soil respiration was measured. The amount of carbon allocated to above and below ground biomass was 52.25 and 14.52 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon in annual litterfall was 4.71 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon within 50cm soil depth was 58.56 ton C $ha^{-1}$ 50cm-$depth^{-1}$. Total amount of organic carbon in this Pinus densiflora forest was estimated to 130.04 ton C $ha^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon in tree layer, shrub and herb layer was 4.12, 0.10 and 0.04 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ and total amount of organic carbon was 4.26 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon returned to the forest via litterfall was 1.62 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of carbon evolved through soil respiration was 6.25 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of carbon evolved through microbial respiration and root respiration was 3.19 and 3.06 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The amount of organic carbon absorbed from the atmosphere of this Pinus densiflora forest was 1.07 ton C $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ when it was estimated from the difference between Net Primary Production and microbial respiration.

Estimation of Acidic Wastewater Toxicity on the Activated Sludge (활성슬러지에 미치는 산폐수의 독성도 예측)

  • Respiration rate should be a reasonable state variable for the activated sludge and could be used to simulate the performance of the activated sludge process. Toxic materials are classified into three groups, competitive, noncompetitive and uncompetitive. They increase/decrease the half saturation coefficient or specific growth rate. that means decreasing of the substrate removal capacity. In this research, a pilot-scale activated sludge process was operated under extended aeration method, and a representative noncompetitive inhibitor, acidic wastewater was applied to establish a respirometry-based toxicity model. Using this model. the correlation coefficient between measured and calculated respiration rate was 0.96 when acidic wastewater(pH 3.9~5.5) was introduced continuously to the aeration tank. Even though respiration rate was decreased by toxic effect of acidic wastewater, effluent substrate concentration represented to COD was deteriorated just a little bit. It might be caused by the low ratio of readily biodegradable substrate in the input substrate. Reduction of respiration rate by decreasing of input substrate concentration was much lower than that by acidic wastewater, and hence it was estimated that the possibility of false toxic alarm caused by decreasing of substrate concentration should be low.

  • Seven constructed and three natural tidal flats were compared to evaluate state-of- the-art of creation and restoration technology for tidal flats. parameters studied were physico-chemical and biological characteristics of soils and rate of respiration. The natural tidal flats had higher contents of silts, nitrogen and organic matter compared to the constructed ones. The natural ones had reductive Bone below 2 cm whereas the constructed ones had oxidative zone from the surface to below 20 cm. The bacterial population in the soil of the constructed tidal flats was one to two magnitudes lower than that in the natural ones. Biomass of macrobenthos and microbial respiration rate, however, were not different significantly between the natural and the constructed tidal flats. The purification capacity by diatom+bacterial+meiobenthos and macrobenthos in the constructed tidal flats was higher than that in the natural ones due to deeper permeable layer for purification in the constructed tidal flats. There was an exceptional constructed tidal flat with similar physico-chemical and biological characteristics to natural ones. Shearing stress to the surface of the tidal flat by the flow of seawater was as low as that of natural ones. These hydraulic conditions seemed to be a controlling factor on structures and functions of tidal flats. The control of hydraulic condition seemed to be one of the most important factors to create natural-like tidal flats.

Relationship between growth, respiration and permeability of chlorella cell treated with gibberellic acid (Gibberellic acid에 의한 chlorella의 생장과 호흡 및 투과성과의 관계)

  • Effect pf gibberellic acid (GA) on the growth rate, respiratory activity and solute uptake of Chlorella cells were measured and their correlation were discussed. Growth rate and respiratory activity of the algal cells are enhanced considerably by very samll amount (50 ppm) of GA treatment although they are suppressed by relatively higher concentration more than 100 ppm. Phosphate uptake of the algal cells, however, decreased even though lower concentration of GA is applied. Thereforem it is inferred that the growth enhancement of the algae by GA is not due to the increase of the permeability of the algal cells but expansion growth owing to the increase of osmotic pressure caused by the increase of hydrolase activity of the algae.

  • Effects of GA and IAA on the respiratory and photosynthetic activity of each growth stage during the synchronous culture of Chlorella ellipsodiea, were investigated. 1) GA ($2{\times}10^{-8}M$) affected most insignificantly on the respiratory activity of the stages Dn, Da, $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$-cells but only at $L_4$-cells treated with IAA($10^{-3}/M$) were promoted and $L_3$, $L_4$-cells were suppressed. With the treatment of GA-IAA the effects on respiration of eah stage cells were antagonistic. 2) Photosynthetic activity treated with GA during the each stage of Chlorella cells was promoted and IAA treated-cell were suppressed. The effect of GA-IAA upon the process of life cycle was also antagonistic. 3) It was revealed that respiratory and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella cells by the treatment of GA(($2{\times}10^{-8}M$) and IAA($10{\times}^{-3}/M$) had antogonistic effects.

Analysis of the Substrate Removal Characteristics of TPA Using OUR and NUR Tests, and Simulation with ASM1 (호흡률과 탈질률 실험과 ASM1을 이용한 전산모사를 통한 TPA의 기질 분해 특성 평가)

  • In this study, nitrate uptake rate(NUR) and oxygen uptake rate(OUR) tests were conducted for the assessment of application of Terephtalic acid(TPA) by-product as an alternative external carbon source for sewage treatment plant(STP). With the ASM1 installed in GPS-X the substrate removal characteristic was investigated with simulation by obtained data from NUR and OUR test. As a result, the fraction of RBDCOD(readily biodegradable COD) was mort than 90% and specific denitrification rate was observed about 8.00 mg $NO_3^-$-N/g VSS/hr that was similar to conventional external carbon source. In the next step, sensitivity analysis for heterotrophic biomass in ASM1 was conducted. Optimized parameters of ${\mu}_{max,H}$, $K_s$, ${\eta}_g$, and $b_H$ were 6.60/day, 23.3 mg/L, 0.88, and 0.54/day, respectively. Then, relative mean squared error(RMSE) was reduced to about 40%. Optimized parameters value were well corresponded with the substrate removal characteristics of high maximum and final endogenous specific OUR and high specific NUR.

호흡율 측정기를 이용한 폐수처리 공정수의 생물학적 활성측정

  • In this study, it was observed to oxygen uptake rate(OUR) on microbes in activated sludge process. OUR was showed to 43, 55, and $64\;mgO_2/L/hr$ when inoculated microbes mass were 3, 5, and 10%(v/v%). In additon to oxygen was consumed to $4{\sim}42\;mgO_2/L/hr$ as changed substrate concentration. Also, we were measured kinetics coefficient in order to know growth tendency. It was concluded to maximum growth rate$(\;{\mu}\;_{max})$, $2.7\;day^{-1}$, yield coefficient, 0.655, and half-velocity coefficient, 36.11 mg/L.

  • Experiments were carried out to clarify changes of intercellular gas composition, respiration and ethylene evolution by controlled external atmospheric pressure and external gas composition on apples. Jonathan apples, harvested 25, in September and Rolls apples, harvested 25, in October, 1971 and 1972 were used. Results obtained were as follows: 1. Intercellular gas volumes were proportionally changed by the given pressure, and the given pressure remarkably affected internal gas composition and volume of apples. As intercellular gas volumes were reached in their equilibrium within 5 min. after treatment, the internal atmospheric conditions became constant rapidly. 2. The increase of internal $CO_2$ production was co-related with an amount of internal $O_2$ consumption, therefore, the decreasing period of internal $O_2$ consumption was equalled to the period of climacteric rise in respiration. 3. The increasing of $CO_2$ production followed evolution of $C_2$H$_4$ and this phenomenon on SAP part. was subsequent to NAP part 4. In sub-atmospheric storage, CA effect was also obtained by control of low $O_2$ and high $CO_2$ concentration.
