  • In this research, based on the condition of using desulfurization gypsum(FGD) as a stimulator for high-volume blast furnace slag cement mortar, sieving and heating process methods of removing activated carbon in FGD were compared with the non-processed FGD and recycled and natural fine aggregates were compared for suitable aggregate to be used. According to the result of experiment, sieving with 0.3mm was more efficient than $500^{\circ}C$ heating for processing the FGD, and recycled fine aggregate showed more favorable result than natural fine aggregate at the FGD content was 5 to 10%. On the other hand, the mortar mixture including recycled fine aggregate had a high drying shrinkage, and absorption ratio, and thus specific limitations on applying recycled fine aggregate should be required.

  • UHPC has high performance, high strength and excellent mechanical properties. Moreover UHPC(Ultra High Performance Cementitious Composite) has advantage to reduce cross section under the same load compared with other kinds of concrete. But silica fume which is imported from foreign country has a abundant portion in UHPC mixture in comparison with normal concrete. This is one of the main reason to raise the construction cost. Superior mechanical properties of UHPC due to the optimum filling composition can be changed by replacing the very fine ingredient. The purpose of this research is to grasp the characteristic of UHPC which silica fume and silica flour is replaced with limestone powder. This experiment can be divided into three classes according to the kinds of replacement. The compressive strength and flow of all types were measured and microstructure and hydration phenomena for comparing RPC were analyzed by SEM, XRD, NMR method. As a result, the replacement can be considered to be effective by for the decrease of the UHPC structure construction cost and improvement of the fresh UHPC.

  • In this paper, the effects of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and aluminum potassium sulfate ($AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$) dosage on strength properties were investigated. For evaluating the property related to the dosage of alkali activator, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) of 4% (N1 series) and 8% (N2 series) was added to 1~5% (K1~K5) dosage of aluminum potassium sulfate ($AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$) and 1% (C1) and 2% (C2) dosage of calcium oxide (CaO). W/B ratio was 0.5 and binder/ fine aggregate ratio was 0.5, respectively. Test result clearly showed that the compressive strength development of alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) mortars were significantly dependent on the dosage of NaOH and $AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$. The result of XRD analysis indicated that the main hydration product of $NaOH+AlK (SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$ activated slag was ettringite and CSH. But at early ages, ettringite and sulfate coated the surface of unhydrated slag grains and inhibited the hydration reaction of slag in high dosage of $NaOH+AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$. The $SO_4{^{-2}}$ ions from $AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$ reacts with CaO in blast furnace slag or added CaO to form gypsum ($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$), which reacts with CaO and $Al_2O_3$ to from ettringite in $NaOH+AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$ activated slag cement system. Therefore, blast furnace slag can be activated by $NaOH+AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$.

  • An engineered cementitious composite produced with slag particles (Slag-ECC) had been developed based on micromechanical principle. Base grain ingredients were properly selected, and then the mixture proportion was optimized to be capable of achieving robust tensile ductility in the hardened state. The rheological design is performed in the present study by optimizing the amount of admixtures suitable for self-consolidating casting and shotcreting process in the fresh state. A special focus is placed on the rheological control which is directly applicable to the construction in field, using prepackaged product with all pulverized ingredients. To control the rheological properties of the composite, which possesses different fluid properties to facilitate two types of processing (i.e., self-consolidating and shotcreting processing), the viscosity change of the cement paste suspensions over time was initially investigated, and then the proper dosage of the admixtures in the cement paste was selected. The two types of mixture proportion were then optimized by self-consolidating & shotcreting tests. A series of self-consolidating and shotcreting tests demonstrated excellent self-consolidation property and sprayability of the Slag-ECC. The rheological properties altered through this approach were revealed to be effective in obtaining Slag-ECC hardened properties, represented by pseudo strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension, allowing the readily achievement of the desired function of the fresh Slag-ECC. These ductile composites with self-consolidating and shotcreting processing can be broadly utilized for a variety of applications, e.g., in strengthening seismic resistant structures with congested reinforcements, or in repairing deteriorated infrastructures by shotcreting process.

  • The cement industry brought very severe environment problems with massive carbon dioxide during its production. To solve this problem, attempts on Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS) concrete that perfectly substitutes industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) for cement are being actively made. AAS concrete is possible to have high strength development at room temperature, however, it is difficult to ensure the working time due to the fast setting time and the loss of workabillity because of the alkali reaction. In this study, the early age properties of alkali activated slag mortar are investigated to obtain the fundamental data for AAS concrete application to structural members. The water-binder ratio (W/B) was fixed at 0.35 and sodium hydroxide and waterglass as alkali activator was used. The compressive strength, the flow and the ultrasonic pulse velocity were measured according to the type of superplasticisers, which were naphthalene(N), lignin(L), melamine(M) and PC(P), up to a maximum of 2 percent by the mass of GGBFS. The results showed that adding melamine type of superplasticizer improved the fluidity of AAS mortar without decreasing the compressive strength, while naphthalene and polycarbonate type of superplasticizer had little effect on the fluidity of AAS mortar.

  • This research investigates the influence of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) composition on the alkali-activated slag cement (AASC). Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) was added to GGBFS binder between 2% and 16% by weight. The alkaline activators KOH (potassium hydroxide) was used and the water to binder ratio of 0.50. The strength development results indicate that increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ enhanced hydration. The 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ and 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ specimens had the highest strength, with an average of 30.8 MPa and 45.2 MPa, after curing for 28days. The strength at 28days of 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 46% higher than that of 2M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Also, the strength at 28days of 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 44% higher than that of 4M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Increase the $Al_2O_3$ contents of the binder results in the strength development at all curing ages. The incorporation of AASC tended to increases the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) due to the similar effects of strength, but increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ adversely decreases the water absorption and porosity. Higher addition of $Al_2O_3$ in the specimens increases the Al/Ca and Al/Si in the hydrated products. SEM and EDX analyses show that the formation of much denser microstructures with $Al_2O_3$ addition.

  • Even though high performance concrete was developed according to the trend of bigger and higher of reinforced concrete building, the rheological evaluations such as viscosity, yield stress are not enough to use as input data to accomplish the numerical analysis for the construction design. So there are many problems in the harden concrete such as poor compaction, rock pocket and crack, etc. in the field. In this study, consistency curves were measured by the viscometer as hydration reaction time passed. At the same time the slump flow test and Vicat setting test were carried out for comparing with the results of rheological properties. The fluidity of the W/B 30% decreased as the increase of replacement ratio of blast furnace slag. But in case of W/B 40%, the replacement ration did not significantly influenced to the slump flow value with the passage of hydration time. By the replacement of blast furnace slag to cement, initial setting was delayed and the time gap between initial and final setting became shorten. Through the regression analysis using Bingham model, there are a sudden changes of viscosity and yield stress around initial setting in case of low W/B 30%. The increase of workability by the change of free water in cement paste was offset by the coating effect of impermeable layer in case of W/B 40%.

  • Recently, lots of researches on concrete with high volume mineral admixture such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) have been carried out to reduce $CO_2$. It is known that the precast concrete has an advantage of high strength at early age due to steam curing, even if concrete has high replacement level of mineral admixture. However it demands the investigation of compressive strength properties according to steam curing regimens. In this study, concretes with water-binder ratio of 32, 35% and water content of 135, 150, $165kg/m^3$ were produced to investigate compressive strength properties of high volume (60% by mass) GGBFS cement concrete according to steam curing regimens. Then steam curing was implemented with the maximum temperature of 50, $60^{\circ}C$ and steaming time of 5, 6, 7 hours. From the test results, it was found that steam curing was effective to raise early strength of high volume GGBFS cement concrete, but 28 day compressive strengths of steam cured specimens were lower than those of water cured specimens. Thus, a further study would be needed for the optimum steam curing regimens to satisfy target demolded strength and specified strength for the application of high volume GGBFS cement concrete to precast concrete members.

  • This research presents the results of an investigation on the characteristic of multi-component blended high fluidity mortars. The binder was blended ordinary Portland cement(OPC), ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS), calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA) and ultra rapid setting cement(URSC). The GGBFS was replaced by OPC from 30%(P7 series), 50%(P5 series) and 70%(P3 series), CSA and URSC was 10% or 20% mass. The superplasticizer of polycarboxylate type were used. A constant water-to-binder ratio(w/b)=0.35 was used for all mixtures. Test were conducted for mini slump, setting time, V-funnel, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. According to the experimental results, the contents of superplasticizer, V-funnel and compressive strength increases with an increase in CSA or URSC contents for all mixtures. Moreover, the setting time and drying shrinkage ratio decrease with and increase in CSA or URSC. CSA decreased dry shrinkage but URSC had less effect. However, the mixed binders of CSA and URSC had a large effect of reducing drying shrinkage by complementary effect. This is effective for improving the initial strength of URSC, and CSA is effective for the expansion and improvement of long-term strength.

  • Recently, building structures tend to be super high-rise and large-scale with the development of concrete technology. When high-rise building is constructed of reinforced concrete structure, it has a disadvantage that its own weight increases. Light weight aggregate(LWA) was developed to compensate for these shortcomings. Manufacturing concrete using these light weight aggregates has the advantage of reducing the self weight of the reinforced concrete structure, but has a disadvantage in that the strength of the concrete is reduced. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of hardened cement according to the presence or absence of surface coating of lightweight aggregates. As a result, in terms of compressive strength, the surface-coated lightweight aggregate exhibited higher strength than the uncoated lightweight aggregate. Also, it was considered that this is because the interfacial voids of the surface coated lightweight aggregate mixed cement hardened body were filled with blast furnace slag fine powder particles.
