  • This study examines farmers' knowledge and perception on the functions and values of wetland and their attitudes on government wetland policies in the state of Illinois in the United States. No significant differences were found in the knowledge of the functions and values of wetland between farmers and non-farmers, although farmers tend to value the importance of wetland less than non-farmers. However, farmers are negative on the importance of protecting wetland and replacing damaged or destroyed wetlands as well as stricter government wetland policies. It suggests that noticeable discrepancy exists between farmers' knowledge of wetland and their practice to protect wetland.

  • The Oxford area is one of the major innovative regions of the world. The innovative characteristics of the area, however, have not been well exposed to the academic communities of the world and Korea. In fact, the area was a base of breading the Cambridge area and has also been playing important roles in creating the major British high-technology region, called "Golden Triangle," composed of Oxford, Cambridge and London. This paper investigates the process of growing innovativeness of the Oxford area and sheds more lights on the birth, growth and key actors of the area's Regional Innovation Systems(RISs). For this research, the author reviewed the literature related to the RISs, and gathered data based on the Internet, statistical data sources, interviews with local scholars and practitioners.

  • Telecommunication and intormation technology have been conceived as crucial as well as revolutionary elements for recent and future social and economic development, and their development have led to a spatial reorganization and locational change of economic activities. Information technology has resulted in important changes in the organization structure and location of firm. This study draws attention to the understanding of the relationship between the diffusion of information technology and changes in firm activities with the special reference to the service industry of the United States. Information technology has had a significant impact on the growth and changes of the service industry of the United States through changes in the organizational and employment structure, market structure, and locational changes. The impact of information technology on location changes of the service industry shows two opposite patterns, concentration and decentralization. Among these patterns, the location change in the service industry of the United States reveals predominantly the decentralization tendency such as suburbanization and transfer to lower ranking cities rather than concentration. In case of Korea, however, it is anticipated that the rapid development of information technology may lead to the concentration of the service industry in Seoul and Capital region.

  • Southern Louisiana has one of the largest Vitnamese refrgee neighborhoods after the mid-1970s. It is impressive that one of their adaptive strategies comes from their religious lives which are centered on either Catholicism or Buddhism. The Buddhism community, especially, exhibits an exotic symbolic system of value and attitude, and thus contributes to cultural diversity in the adopted country. The landscape of the Buddhist temple is a visible symbol to them that the host socirty accepts their maintenance of their own cultural identity and that they are also an integral part of American society. Their making-place and being-in-place procedures, although their culture is being transformed in the original shape, put an emphasis on interaction with the host xociety. These procedures have been facilitated by consolidating their identity as a minority group as well as by interacting with the host society. The on-going influx of foreign immigrant groups seems not to drive them to assimilate into the melting-pot society, but to contribute to contribute to the increase in the cultural diversity of the United States.

  • Using Social Network Analysis and Trade in Value Added Database(TiVA), this paper examines the world trade network. Main findings are as follows. Firstly, there are three types of industries, which have dominant status in the world value added trade network. Those are the manufacturing industries in the developing countries such as China's electronics industry, the service industries in the developed countries such as U.S. R&D, and the manufacturing industries in the developed countries such as German motor vehicle industry. Secondly, the major hub industries in the world trade network have their own specific types in the brokerage roles. Most interestingly, U.S. service industries such as the R&D, the logistics industry, and the whole sale and retail industry reveal itinerant and liaison brokerage roles. Thirdly, Korean industries have been dominated by Chinese industries. However, the financial industry and the R&D industry could have revealed superior status as the brokerage role of itinerant. This implies Korean industries could sustain their competitiveness of the hubness status only by openness policy in the service industry.

  • This paper aims at, firstly, analyzing the preference of rental apartment owned by real estate companies, and the characteristics of housing location factors which Korean university students prefer, secondly, examining the effect of location factors to housing preferences. Especially, comparative analysis between this study and US students' precedent case study are used, in order to derive the implications about the housing policy. The main results of this study are as follows. Firstly, according to the questionnaire survey results, a great part of Korea and US university students prefer rental apartments owned by real estate companies as next housing after graduation. And a meaningful part of them prefer rental apartments owned by real estate companies as permanent housings. Secondly, according to factor analysis, five new factors such as (1) housing condition, (2) facilities and management, (3) neighborhood, (4) reputation and policy, (5) accessibility are extracted. Finally, according to logistic regression analysis, "facilities and management" and "reputation and policy" factors influence the preference of rental apartment. Therefore, provisions of "facilities and management" and "reputation and policy" factor are important to activate rental apartments owned by real estate companies for young generation.

  • The study examines the research trends of doctoral dissertations in Library Science and Information Science published in the U.S. for the last 5 years. Data collected from PQDT Global includes 1,016 doctoral dissertations containing "Library Science" or "Information Science" as subject headings, and keywords extracted from those dissertations were used for a network analysis, which helps identifying the intellectual structure of the dissertations. Also, the analysis using 103 subject heading keywords resulted in various centrality measures, including triangle betweenness centrality and nearest neighbor centrality, as well as 26 clusters of associated subject headings. The most frequently studied subjects include computer-related subjects, education-related subjects, and communication-related subjects, and a cluster with information science as the most central subject contains most of the computer-related keywords, while a cluster with library science as the most central subject contains many of the education-related keywords. Other related subjects include various user groups for user studies, and subjects related to information systems such as management, economics, geography, and biomedical engineering.
