In the mathematics curriculum that was revised in 2009, statistical literacy is explicitly addressed as a goal and specific objectives are included. However, statistical literacy has not been addressed in the studies on KSAT. This study aimed to draw implications on how to improve KSAT in a sense that statistical literacy could be evaluated instead of testing typical facts or skills by comparing KSAT with SAT. We used mathematical problem solving process and category of context of PISA framework (OECD, 2013) to administer the comparison of KSAT and SAT. Result shows that both KSAT and SAT use various context, but items in KSAT is limited in assessing critical understanding. We suggested several ways to develop context-based items for KSAT in which statistical literacy could be assessed.
In this study, I compared and analyzed the contents of Korean, Japanese, Singapore, American, and Finnish textbooks about fraction which is one of the important and difficult concepts in elementary school mathematics. This is aimed to get the implications for meaningful fractional teaching and learning by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the methods and time of introducing the concept because fraction has the diversity of the sub-concepts and the introducing methods or process. As a result of the analysis, the fraction was introduced as part-whole(area) in all five countries' textbooks, but the use of number line, conversion between improper fraction and mixed number, whether to deal with part-whole(set) model. Furthermore, there are differences in the methods in obtaining of the equivalent fraction and the order of arrangement in comparison of fraction. Through this analysis, we discussed the reconsideration of the introducing contexts of fractions, the use of number line when introducing fractions, and the problem of segmentation and classification of contents.
The purpose of this study is to introduce the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics which is released on June 2, 2010 in the U.S.A. The common core state standards are aligned with college and work expectations, and include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills. The most distinguishable differences between the CCSS standards and the NCTM standards are that the CCSS standards considers the mathematical modeling as one of the mathematical content domains such as algebra, geometry, ets, and the standards are designed by working together with school leaders of all states.

Some of the critical changes in the revised 2015 Korean Mathematics curriculum were that direct proportion and inverse proportion were moved from elementary school to middle school and that supplementary content related to correlation was included. These decisions were based on comparative studies of international curriculum. Therefore in this study, we selected countries for comparison; United States, England, France, Finland, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and Taiwan. We looked into the timing and scope for direct/inverse proportion and correlation in curricula of these countries. Along with this, we established four criteria; vertical sequence, horizontal sequence, external connection, and internal connection for an analysis framework. Then we compared and analysed the direct/inverse proportion and correlation in each curriculum. As a result, in most of these curricula, the direct/inverse proportions are introduced at middle school or are introduced at elementary school and then developed further at middle school. Most of curriculums on direct/inverse proportion and correlation match the four criteria. Correlation is introduced in high school mathematics in all counties except Finland and it is dealt in diverse context introducing related concepts, for example, correlation coefficient, regression straight line, and least square. We suggested that it is necessary to refer these international trends for the next revision of curriculum.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences between Korean mathematics textbooks and CPMP textbooks in the view of conceptual network, structure of mathematical contents, instructional design, and teaching and learning environment to explore the implications for mathematics education in Korea. According to the results, Korean textbooks emphasized the mathematical structures and conceptual network, on the other hand, CPMP textbooks focused on making connections between mathematical concepts and corresponding real life situations as well as mathematical structures. And generalizing mathematical concepts at the symbolic level was very important objective in Korean textbooks, but in the CPMP textbooks, investigating mathematical ideas and solving problems in diverse contexts including real- life situations were considered very important. Teachers using Korean textbooks preferred an explanatory teaching method with the use of concrete manipulatives and student worksheet, however, teachers using CPMP textbooks emphasized collaborative group activities to communicate mathematical ideas and encouraged students to use graphing calculators when they explore mathematical concepts and solve problems.
The objective of this study is to explore the meaning generated through discourse in three different types of 1st-grade middle school textbooks in Korea and CMP textbook in the United States, specifically focusing on histograms. Through a discursive perspective, the study aims to analyze the characteristics of questioning within the stages of statistical problem-solving found in histogram tasks. The findings highlight several significant points. Firstly, variations exist in the definitions of histograms between Korean and US CMP textbooks. Secondly, diverse discursive structures contribute to the interpretation and understanding of histograms in textbooks. Thirdly, limitations are observed in the stages of statistical problem-solving reflected in histogram tasks. Lastly, distinctions are identified in the types of questioning employed in histogram tasks between Korean and US CMP textbooks. Building on these insights, the study suggests concrete ideas for enhancing the process of defining histograms and refining the questioning in histogram tasks.
The outbreak of the First and the Second World Wars cast great shadow across the Europe including mathematical society. The IMU led by French mathematicians after the First World War ceased to exist because it was used politically. As Europe ran into the Second World War, all the international mathematical activities were ceased. Prominent mathematicians were put into camp by Nazi or moved to the United States of America. After the war, European mathematicians did not have capacity to represent the international mathematical society anymore. This led Stone and other American mathematicians to form the new IMU, which was independent of political ideology. This paper studies the birth process of the new IMU after the War and some major events that happened to ICM in 1950s.
This study aims to design mathematics-integrated classes that cultivate artificial intelligence (AI) thinking and to analyze students' AI thinking within these classes. To do this, four classes were designed through the integration of the AI4K12 Initiative's AI Big Ideas with the 2015 revised elementary mathematics curriculum. Implementation of three classes took place with 5th and 6th grade elementary school students. Leveraging the computational thinking taxonomy and the AI thinking components, a comprehensive framework for analyzing of AI thinking was established. Using this framework, analysis of students' AI thinking during these classes was conducted based on classroom discourse and supplementary worksheets. The results of the analysis were peer-reviewed by two researchers. The research findings affirm the potential of mathematics-integrated classes in nurturing students' AI thinking and underscore the viability of AI education for elementary school students. The classes, based on AI Big Ideas, facilitated elementary students' understanding of AI concepts and principles, enhanced their grasp of mathematical content elements, and reinforced mathematical process aspects. Furthermore, through activities that maintain structural consistency with previous problem-solving methods while applying them to new problems, the potential for the transfer of AI thinking was evidenced.
Since the 1990s, Korea has been developing various policies and materials for the improvement of basic learning abilities. In this study, the cases of policies for underachievers in Korea and the US were compared and analyzed the programs for mathematics underachievers in elementary school with Chuncheon office of education and Seattle public schools. All of them started from the point of relief of underachievers, but they differed in the process of operating them specifically. This study suggests the followings. First, active utilization of vacation programs to solve problems such as low-income meal service, prevention of stigma effects, securing teacher's instruction time, teacher-instructor cooperation. Second, the necessity of detailed activity-centered textbooks that underachievers can explore with interest in mathematics learning and easy to use by teachers. Third, specific cooperation for inducing interest of their own children's learning and forming close ties between parents and teachers. Fourth, program analysis by a professional evaluation group to improve the quality of underachiever program.
The goal of this study is to investigate a didactic transposition method of text books and high school students' understanding for the Normal Distribution. To accomplish this goal, framework descriptors were developed to analyse the didactic transposition method and interpret the students' understanding based on the Historico-Genetic process of the Normal Distribution, the meaning of the Normal Distribution as a scholarly knowledge and the results of previous studies on students' understanding for the Normal Distribution. This study presented several recommendations for instruction of the Normal Distribution according to the results of analysing the didactic transposition method and interpreting the students' understanding in terms of the developed framework.
