  • The 3-methylglutaconic aciduria (3-MGA-uria) is a heterogeneous group of several inborn errors of metabolism characterized by increased urinary excretion of 3-methylglutaconic acid. In most cases, 3-MGA is only slightly increased and combined with other metabolites. However, repeated and significant excretion of 3-MGA (40->1,000 mmol/mol creatinine) is a hallmark of the disorders of 3-MGA-urias. There have identified five distinct types of disorders: inborn errors of leucine metabolism and four disorders of mitochondrial dysfunction through different mechanism. The range of clinical and biochemical findings in this condition is variable. In the patients with 3-methylglutaconyl-CoA hydratase deficiency, increased 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid is useful in the differential diagnosis. Other forms of 3-MGA-urias are welldefined clinically such as Barth syndrome, Costeff syndrome, TMEM 70 defect, MEGDEL syndrome, and DCMA syndrome. We provide an overview of the expanding clinical spectrum and differential diagnosis of the 3-MGA-urias.

  • The chemical composition of the continental crust play an important role in understanding of crustal formation and evolution and quantifying other processes taking place within continental crust. We summarized geochemical data reported in the previous literature for the crustal rocks in the Korean Peninsula and divided their chemical composition into geologic time scale. In the variation diagram normalized by average composition of the upper crustal rocks, the geochemical characteristics of the upper crust during Triassic period is different from those of the upper crustal rocks after Jurassic period or before Precambrian. However, the geochemical characteristics of the Jurassic and Precambrian period are similar each other. Our summarized data indicate that the source material of Triassic upper crust may be different from that of Jurassic or Precambrian upper crust.

  • The chemotherapy using macromolecules, i.e., monoclonal antibodies loaded with anticancer agents hasn't been successful in delivering therapeutic amount of the conjugates. The comprehensive evaluation of mass transfer factors in tumor is prerequisite for the development of the effective chemotherapy. Characterization of neuroblastoma implanted in immunosuppressed athymic nude rats was performed. Its growth kinetics, glucose metabolic rate (GMR) were measured along with the interstitial fluid pressure (IFP), blood perfusion rate (BPR) and pH distribution throughtout the tumor radius. Volume doubling time and GMR were 8.1 days(SD 0.44 day), 23.53 mg/min/100 g(SD 3.54 mg/min/100 g), respectively. The IFP in tumor center was increased with tumor volume, and approached to 3 mmHg (SD 2.6 mmHg) when the tumor was 3 cm high. The radial distribution of IFP, BPR and pH in 2 cm high tumors showed that BPR and pH were decreased, while IFP was increased as the ~ensors moved toward the tumor center. The elevated IFP, decreased BPR and pH in tumor center suggested that the delivery of conjugates might be increased by properly manipulating mass transfer factors.

  • Using the concept of granite suite/supersuite we hierarchically divided the Triassic granites in South Korea which have spatio-temporally close relationships each other. Among the Triassic granites in the Okcheon belt (western Yeongnam massif), the Baegrok granite and the Jeomchon granite can be grouped into one suite, the Baegrok suite, whereas the Cheongsan granite into the Cheongsan suite. These two suites can be grouped again into a larger supersuite, the Baegrok supersuite, on the basis of the similarity in the source rocks and the contrasts in the petrographic and geochemical characteristics. Three Triassic granites in the Gyeongsang basin - the Yeongdeok granite, the Yeonghae granite, and the Cheongsong granite - can be grouped into the Yeongdeok suite, Yeonghae suite and Cheongsong suite, respectively. These three suites can be grouped again into a larger supersuite, the Yeongdeok supersuite, on the basis of the similarity in the source rocks and the contrasts in the petrographic and geochemical characteristics. Nd-Sr isotopic signatures for the Baegrok supersuite are quite distinct from those for the Yeongdeok supersuite, indicating that the source materials of each granitic magma were not identical. The source rocks for the Baegrok supersuite are thought to be a mixture of two crustal components of the Yeongnam massif, whereas those for the Yeongdeok supersuite to be a mixture of the depleted mantle with the crustal components of the Yeongnam massif. The fact that the two contemporaneous granite supersuites were derived from the different sources can be explained by the difference of the tectonic environments where the granitic magmas were produced.

  • Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic characteristics of alkaline lavas and tholeiites in Cheju Island show that the isotopic compositions of the former slightly overlap, but have relatively more depleted than the latter. However, in viewpoint of the two eruptional stratigraphies of tholeiites, the isotopic compositon of the older one is similar to those of alkaline rocks in Lava Plateau Stage after Lee (1982). These suggest that the parental magmas of alkaline lavas and tholeiites might have originated from the homogenous mantle sourve and that the characteristics of the mantle source to be partially melted might be different between the eruption stages. The isotopic signatures of the bolcanic rocks in Cheju Island overlap with those in Samoa Islands and South China Basin, indicating the DMM-EM IImixing trend. This is distingushed from the DMM-EM I trend of the Cenozoic volcanic rocks in Korea except for cheju Island and Northeastern China. The modelled binary mixing calculation between MM and EM IImaterials indicates that the mantle source of the volcanic rocks in Cheju Island has been mixed about less than 10% of enriched mantle material (EM II) with depleted mantle material (DMM). Concerned with the indentation model between North China Block (NCB) and South China Block (SCB) after Yin an Nie (1993), we suggest that the distinct isotopic features of DMM-EM I and DMM-EM IIof the Cenozoic volcanic rock in Korea as well as China can be explained by the difference of the nature of subcontinental lithospheric mantle as enriched mantle materials, i.e. EM I of NCB, while EM II of SCB.

  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been attracting significant attention in modern society, owing to the increased incidence rate of various diseases along with population growth. EDCs are found in many commercial products, including some plastic bottles and containers, detergents, liners of metal food cans, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides. EDCs have a hormonal effect on the human body, which disrupts the endocrine system, notably affecting sexual differentiation and normal reproduction, and can trigger cancer as well. Recently, the association between neurological diseases and EDCs has become a hot topic of research in the field of neuroscience. Considering that EDCs negatively affect not only neuronal proliferation and neurotransmission but also the formation of the neuronal networks, EDCs may induce neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as well as neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In light of these potentially deleterious outcomes, important efforts have been underway to minimize the exposure to EDCs through appropriate regulations and policies around the world, but chemicals that have not yet been associated with endocrine disrupting properties are still in wide use. Therefore, more epidemiological investigations and research are needed to fully understand the effects of EDCs on the nervous system.

  • This study tries to examine the emotion of the elite characters in Son Jangsoon's early novel, The Koreans. In this novel, most characters are found to have an envy feeling, except for two female characters, Heeyeon and Sue Han. Although the writer does not consciously explore the envy feeling here, she excellently represents the harmful effects of the envy feeling. In this novel, the envy feeling is related to the desire for success and its frustration. In 1960's, people had high expectation of improvement in their individual lives. The elite groups were more likely to have a successful life with good education. But in this novel, these elite people suffer from frustration of their desire and experience of the envy feeling. The impressive point in this novel is that not only females but also males are shown to have the envy feeling. Envious people have the tendency to compare themselves with people around them, to feel shame in an inferior position and to aspire for superiority. In these envious characters, the feeling of envy reveals their lack, their inferiority and it never provides them with the way to escape from their suffering situation. The writer suggests that the envy feeling can be overcome by pursuing other valuable things and focussing not on other people's desire but on their own desire.

  • The purpose of this study is to substantially understand and identify experienced social exclusion of the disabled in Korea. For this, the 8 times in focus interview implemented on 31 of the disabled with regard to disability type, gender, age, education, job etc. The results, firstly it found that participants experienced material deprivation due to inequality on economic distributions, and the multi-deprivation of social rights overall social systems and scopes resulted from the disability discrimination against the organization of society. Nextly, it represented that they got the exclusion from social participation and isolation and alienation in social relationships in the dimension of society. In that, particularly, a sort of invisible type of social exclusion such as an intolerant and double social norm and values is found, which has been impacted on their impairment or disability in the participants. This founded results contribute on applying fundamental data for political and practical implementations for social inclusion of the disabled, as well as theoretical building for conception of social exclusion of the disabled.

  • Isovaleric acidemia (IVA) is an autosomal recessively inherited organic acid disorder due to a defect of the enzyme isovaleryl-CoA dehydrogenase in the leucine metabolic pathway. Deficiency of this enzyme results in the accumulation of derivatives of isovaleryl-CoA. In acute illness in IVA, isovaleric acid and its derivatives accumulate and profound metabolic acidosis with ketosis, characteristic pungent body odor, hypoglycemia, and hyperammonemia can be developed. Additionally, recurrent vomiting, failure to thrive, developmental delay, epilepsy and mental retardation are chronic presenting symptoms and signs for IVA. On the result of newborn screening for inherited metabolic disorders, increased levels of isovalerylcarnitine (C5) are shown. However, C5 elevation can be accompanied with short/branched-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (SBCAD) and therapy with certain antibiotics containing pivalic acid. Quantitative measurement of organic acids in urine and acylcarnitine profiles in plasma are necessary to differential diagnosis. Molecular genetic analysis of the IVD gene for IVA and ACADSB is also helpful to confirm IVA and SBCAD deficiency, respectively. Considering that IVA can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality at acute presentation of metabolic crisis, early diagnosis prior to the onset of symptoms by newborn screening enable to introduction of early treatment and prevention of acute and chronic complications.
