  • PURPOSES: In this study, alkali-activated blast-furnace slag (AABFS) was investigated to determine its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and to demonstrate the feasibility of its use as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In addition, this study was performed to evaluate the influence of the alkali-activator concentration on the absorption capacity and physicochemical characteristics. METHODS: To determine the characteristics of the AABFS as a function of the activator concentration, blast-furnace slag was activated by using calcium hydroxide at mass ratios ranging from 6 to 24%. The AABFS pastes were used to evaluate the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate, while the OPC paste was tested under the same conditions for comparison. The changes in the surface morphology and chemical composition before and after the carbon dioxide absorption were analyzed by using SEM and XRF. RESULTS: At an activator concentration of 24%, the AABFS absorbed approximately 42g of carbon dioxide per mass of paste. Meanwhile, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed onto the OPC was minimal at the same activator concentration, indicating that the AABFS actively absorbed carbon dioxide as a result of the carbonation reaction on its surface. However, the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate decreased as the activator concentration increased, because a high concentration of the activator promoted a hydration reaction and formed a dense internal structure, which was confirmed by SEM analysis. The results of the XRF analyses showed that the CaO ratio increased after the carbon dioxide absorption. CONCLUSIONS : The experimental results confirmed that the AABFS was capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide, suggesting that it can be used as a dry absorbent for carbon capture and sequestration and as a feasible alternative to OPC. In the formation of AABFS, the activator concentration affected the hydration reaction and changed the surface and internal structure, resulting in changes to the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate. Accordingly, the activator ratio should be carefully selected to enhance not only the carbon capture capacity but also the physicochemical characteristics of the geopolymer.

  • In this study, biodegradable superporous hydrogels(SPHs) with fast swelling and superabsorbent properties were prepared using biodegradable crosslinkers and their physicochemical properties were characterized. A biodegradable crosslinker (PLA-PEG-PLA DA) was synthesized by a ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide (LA) using hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator, followed by diacrylation of the end groups for the introduction of polymerizable vinyl groups. Various kinds of hydrogels with different chemical compositions were prepared and characterized in terms of swelling ratio, swelling kinetics, and biodegradation properties. The synthetic results were confirmed by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR and GPC measurements, and the porous structures of the prepared SPHs and their porosities were identified by a scanning electron microscope and mercury porosimetry, respectively. The physicochemical properties of SPHs could be controlled by varying their chemical compositions and their cytotoxicity were found to be very low by MTT assay.

  • This study was designed to find out the effects of cropping patterns on the changes of soil physico-chemical properties. Soil properties and crop growth were studied under the four cropping patterns, such as rice monoculture, green garlic-rice, manure rye-rice and radish-rice. The results are summurized as followings ; 1. Soil physical properties were affected by different pre-crop cultivations and its residual effects were continued for 60-70 days after rice transplanting 2. Soil air permeabilities at harvesting time of pre-crops were high in order of manure rye>green garlic>radish, and water permeabilities during rice cultivation were similar to previous order. 3. Chemical properties of soil were affected by the different fertilizer level of pre-crops and their residual effects were continued to rice harvesting time. The ratio of nutrient uptake to $N-P_2O_5-K_2O $ based on amount of application were in the order of manure rye-rice>radish-rice>rice monoculture>green garlic-rice plot. Fertilizer application after pre-crops cultivation must be considered. 4. Rice root distribution of manure rye-rice plot was higher than that of other cropping patterns at subsoil. However, rice root distribution at green garlic-rice plot and radish-rice plot was high at topsoil which had much residual nutrient from pre-crops. 5. Rice yield after pre-crops was high in order of green garlic-rice>radish-rice> rice monoculture>manure rye-rice.

  • The physicochemical properties and cooking quality of Saechalssal bori (25% pearled ratio), which is a naked waxy barley, were investigated. The amylose, insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), soluble dietary fiber (SDF), total dietary fiber (TDF), and ${\beta}$-glucan contents of Saechalssal bori were 5.2, 10.8, 9.5, 20.3, and 3.7%, respectively. Pasting temperature, peak and final viscosity, and setback of Saechalssal bori were $66.5^{\circ}C$, 383.2, 231.3, and 55.6 RVU, respectively. The water absorption, expansibility, and soluble solid of Saechalssal bori were 232.2, 405.3, and 3.5%, respectively. As the ratio of water to grain increased, L value increased, whereas a and b values were decreased. The sensory evaluation showed that wateriness and overall acceptability increased with increasing ratio of water to grain, resulting in determining 2.1 times as the optimum ratio of water to grain. The cooked Saechalssal bori prepared using optimum condition had hardness (1.2 kg), cohesiveness (4.0), springiness (1.0), gumminess (5.1), chewiness (5.3), adhesiveness (0.2 kg), and A/H (0.8), respectively.

  • This study determined the photostimulated luminescence(PSL), thermoluminescence(TL), and electron spin resonance(ESR) properties of wheat and corn irradiated with 0-10 kGy of gamma-ray or electron-beam. PSL values of both irradiated grains, regardless of radiation source, were 241-429 photons/sec in nonirradiated samples(negative values, defined as ${\leq}700$ photons/60 sec) and 5,528-40,870 photons/60 sec in irradiated ones(positive values, defined as ${\geq}5,000$ photons/sec), thereby distinguishing irradiated from nonirradiated samples. The TL glow curves($TL_1$) peaked at around $300^{\circ}C$ in nonirradiated samples, but at about $180^{\circ}C$ in irradiated samples, at high intensities, regardless of radiation source. The TL ratios($TL_1/TL_2$) calculated to strengthen $TL_1$ data reliability were less than 0.03 for nonirradiated samples and over 0.20 for irradiated materials, in good agreement with threshold values for nonirradiated(${\leq}0.1$) and irradiated(${\geq}0.1$) samples. ESR analysis was not applicable in identification of irradiated wheat and corn. Electron-beam irradiation resulted in higher PSL and TL signals than did gamma-rays, at the same applied doses.

  • Development of pellet-type artificial diet for insect was tried by using a twin screw extruder(TSE). Screws were arranged several times and two reverse screws were equipped on the foreparts of 2 axes of TSE. Pellet-type diet could be produced successfully under conditions of TSE set as the following. : 300 rpm of main motor speed, 228 rpm of feed motor speed, $75m{\ell}/min$ of running water speed and 5 mm of extrusion diameter. The optimum adding quantity of water to the manufactured diet was $1.2{\sim}1.5$ times of dry diet. On the rearing results of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua and common cutworm, Spedoptera litura with the pellet-type diet, the final survival ratio (emergence rate) of these two species was over than 50%, and so it was concluded that the manufactured pellet-type artificial diet was sufficient dietetically to rear those insects.

  • The state-of-arts of multiscale simulation (MSS) in science and engineering is briefly presented and MSS for process development (PD-MSS) is proposed to effectively apply the MSS to the process development. The four-level PD-MSS is composed of PLS (process-level simulation), FLS (fluid-level simulation), mFLS (microfluid-level simulation) and MLS (molecular-level simulation). Characteristics and methods of each level, as well as connectivity between the four levels are described. For example in PD-MSS, absorption column, fluidized-bed reactor, and adsorption process are introduced. For successful MSS, it is necessary to understand the multiscale nature in chemical engineering problems, to develop models representing physical phenomena at each scale and between scales, to develop softwares implementing mathematical models on computer, and to have strong computing facilities. MSS should be performed within acceptable accuracy of simulation results, available computation capacity, and reasonable efficiency of calculation. Macroscopic and microscopic scale simulations have been developed relatively well but mesoscale simulation shows a bottleneck in MSS. Therefore, advances on mesoscale models and simulation tools are required to accurately and reliably predict physical phenomena. PD-MSS will find its way into a sustainable technology being able to shorten the duration and to reduce the cost for process development.

  • In the case of the impacted teeth, the clinician has to consider development of tooth, site of impaction, eruption path, and cooperation of patient. If there are genetic or general factors to effect the eruption of tooth, the clinician treats these first and then takes the early treatment for eruption guidance. If there are physical factors to intercept eruption, the clinician put them off first. However, if there are no factors to effect eruption of tooth and enough space for eruption, the clinician can consider extraction of deciduous teeth, forced eruption and surgical reposition. In case of surgical repositioning, proper time for root development, proper socket formation, and minimal trauma are important for success. This case presents displaced impacted maxillary central incisor with dilacerated root. The development of root is Nolla's stage 7, and the tooth was treated by surgical repositioning. We can observe no root resorption and good healing pattern.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of functional cover film on oriental melon fruit quality under unheated plastic greenhouse cultivation in cold period. The 6 kind of films having different characteristics were covered at plastic greenhouses and oriental melon seedlings were cultivated at 2 regions of Seongju, respectively. The air-temperatures in plastic greenhouses of J-1 and J-2, having high infrared absorption rate, were about $2{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than K-3. The contents of ${\beta}-carotene$ and sugar of fruit showed significant difference between functional and normal films. The sucrose, determining a sweetness during maturation, and soluble solids content of fruits cultivated in J-1, J-2, J-3, and K-1 were higher than those of K-2 and K-3. Ascorbic acid of fruits was highest in K-2 having low light transmission rate and thermo-keeping capacity. There was no significant difference in mineral content among all of cover films. These results indicated that the use of functional greenhouse covering films could improve fruit quality such as ${\beta}-carotene$ and sugar content of oriental melon.

  • In this study, the push-pull structure polymer for organic photo voHaics (OPVs) was synthesized and characterized. The poly{4,8-didodecyloxybenzo[1,2-b;3,4-b]dithiophene-alt-5,6-bis(octyloxy)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]-thiadiazole} (PDBDT-TBTD) was synthesized by Stille coupling reaction using the benzothiadiazole (BTD) derivative as an electron acceptor and benzodithiophene (BDT) derivative as an electron donor. The structure of monomers and polymers was identified by $^1H-NMR$ and GC-MS. The optical, physical and electrochemical properties of the conjugated polymer were identified by GPC, TGA, UV-Vis and cyclic voltammetry. The number average molecular weight ($M_n$) and initial decomposition temperature (5% weight loss temperature, $T_d$) of PDBDT-TBTD were 6200 and $323^{\circ}C$, respectively. The absorption maxima on the film was about 599 nm and the optical band gap was about 1.70 eV. The structure of device was ITO/PEDOT : PSS/PDBDT-TBTD : $PC_{71}BM/BaF_2/Ba/Al$. PDBDT-TBTD and $PC_{71}BM$ were blended with the weight ratio of 1:2 which were then used as an optical active layer. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of fabricated device was measured by solar simulator and the best PCE was 2.1%.
