  • The present study aims to investigate the effects of bicultural characteristics and social capital on psychological adaptations such as depression and self-esteem. A survey was conducted on 295 foreign-born mothers and their 305 children, ranging from third to sixth grade in elementary school up to seventh to ninth grade in middle school, residing in South Korea's seven major cities, including the city of Seoul. The results of this research are the following: 1) With regards to factors that influence depression among children in a multicultural family, less support from a friend leads to a larger exposure to multicultural programs. Also, the lower the perceived income level of his or her family, greater is the state of the child's depression. 2) Significant factors that influence self-esteem for multicultural children are friends' support, level of mothers' Korean language proficiency, teachers' support, and numbers of multicultural programs. Two implications may be addressed from this study. One is the need to consider bicultural characteristics and social capital to enhance psychological adaptability for children raised in multicultural families. Another is to apply social support characteristics such as friends' and teachers' support to multicultural programs.

  • This study is about classical music lovers who write a lengthy concert review on instagram. The intention and objective of writing a review is discussed in addition to inter-communication between those reviewers. For the analysis, an interview with 8 reviewers are mainly analyzed with their reviews. As a result, it is found that some affordances of Instagram, easiness, randomness, and friendliness affects them to use Instagram more than other social media. Hence, since Instagram is image-based platform, it helps writers to keep their reviews from getting an attention by other users. Because of their sense of inferiority that they are lacking in classical music knowledge, continuous writing and reading of reviews help them accumulating some amount of cultural capital needed for understanding classical music in a proper way.

  • This paper intends to find the determinants of the occupational aspirations of college students in Korea. According to Wisconsin model, the occupational aspiration of youth has a statistically significant influence on his or her actual education level and occupation choice implying that the more motivated with high-level occupational aspiration will obtain the higher level of occupation. The analysis for this study is based on the survey of undergraduate students' perception, attitude and lifestyle in Korea 2004, which was conducted against 1,947 respondents, and multiple regression model was utilized. The dependent variable for occupational aspirations was measured by the Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale (SIOPS) of Donald J. Treiman. Independent variables include social capital and cultural capital as well as demographic variables, socio-economic status, and human capital variables. Social capital variable was measured by the position generator scale of Nan Lin and Mary Dumin, and cultural capital variable was done to our original index. This study shows that social and cultural capitals are factors having significant influence on occupational aspiration, in addition to the well-known factors such as gender, human capital and the occupation of father.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the impact of capital adequacy requirements on the profitability of Korean banks using DOLS model. As a result of the analysis, the impact of BIS capital ratios on commercial and regional banks was different. Demand for capital adequacy has a greater and more significant negative impact on regional banks than on commercial banks. It was shown that bank characteristic variables rather than macroeconomic variables have a more significant effect on bank profitability. In addition, a rise in the BIS capital ratio reduces the profitability of commercial and regional banks, and the higher the ratio of loan-loss provisions, the stronger the relationship. In the case of commercial banks, it is estimated that the demand for capital adequacy did not have a significant impact as they are relatively large and faithful in capital compared to regional banks. However, in the case of regional banks, safer assets need to be selected to meet the BIS capital ratio, and the increasing propotion of these safe assets seems to have a relatively greater negative impact on profitability. Consequency, the financial authorities should consider this results and implement the bank's capital regulation policy.
