  • This paper addresses the small-signal stability and control problems associated with a Static Var Compensator and its power system stabilizer. The major emphasis is on determination of suitable location for SVC arid stabilizer signal tuning through eigenvalues and frequency response techniques. To determinate of suitable location for SVC, this paper used transfer function residues. Adequate oscillation damping is achieved by the use of stabilizing signals, designed through frequency response techniques and added to SVC. The study system is Benchmark System.

  • We propose a algorithm to calculate power factor of fundamental waveform in an environment where the voltage and current have been distorted by harmonics. In the proposed power factor computation algorithm, voltage and current are converted to rotating DQ reference frame, and power factor is calculated from active power and reactive power. We compare the proposed method with the conventional power factor measurement method as mathematically. In a condition that voltage and current are distorted by harmonics, the proposed method accurately measure the power factor of fundamental wave, and it is confirmed by simulation using MATLAB. If the proposed power factor measurement method is applied to an automatic power factor control system, a power factor compensation performance can be maximized in harmonic distortion environment. As a result, it is possible to reduce electricity prices, reduce line loss, increase load capacity, ensure the transmission margin capacity, and reduce the amount of power generation.

  • An AC electrical railroad system has rapidly changing dynamic single-phase load, and at a feeding substation, three-phase electric power is transformed to the paired directional single-phase electric power. There is a great difference in electrical phenomenon between the load of AC electrical railroad system and that of general power system. Electric characteristics of AC electrical railroad's trainload are changed continuously according to the traction, operating characteristic, operating schedule, track slope, etc. Because of the long feeding distance of the dynamic trainload, power quality problems such as voltage drop, voltage imbalance and harmonic distortion my also occur to AC electrical railroad system. These problems affect not only power system stability, but also power quality deterioration in AC electrical railroad system. The dynamic simulation model of AC electrical railroad system presented by PSCAD/EMTDC is modeled in this paper, andthen, it is analyzed voltage drop for AC electrical railroad system both with single-phase distributed STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compensator) installed at SP(Sectioning Post) and without.

  • A technology based on thyristors will be used to manufacture the super-conducting coil AC/DC converters because of the low ratio of cost over installed power compared to a design based on GTO or similar technology. But phase-controlled converter suffers from fundamental disadvantage. They inject current harmonics into the input ac mains due to their nonlinear characteristics, thereby distort the supply voltage waveform, and demand reactive power from the associated ac power system at retarded angles. To overcome this disadvantage, in the case of two series converters at the DC side, connected to the same step-down transformer, apply for the sequence control. It is the most simple and efficient way to reduce the reactive power consumption at low cost. Analytical sequence control algorithm is suggested, the validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results with the small-scaled International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Power Supply to minimize reactive power consumption.

  • Voltage fluctuation, also known as flicker, is a power quality problem caused by nonlinear loads like electric arc furnace. Since it is interpreted as a variation of the supplied electrical energy, it causes the residential customers to feel much annoyed visually through the lamps. Due to the statistical nature of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) short-term flicker severity index, Pst, it is not feasible to pre-evaluate the flicker level using the transient power system simulators such as Sim Power System in Matlab/Simulink. So this paper presents not only how to design the Matlab/Simulink IEC flickermeter to yield the Pst value, which considering electric distribution environments of South Korea, but also how to mitigate the voltage flicker at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). In order to achieve this, the flicker mitigation efficiencies of various compensating devices, such as Static Var Compensator (SVC), STATCOM will be applied and compared. The simulated result demonstrates which compensating equipment is the most efficient method to mitigate the flicker phenomenon.
