  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a slim bristled toothbrush compared with a V-shaped orthodontic toothbrush in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Methods: Thirty four orthodontic patients receiving edgewise treatment were randomly assigned to two groups, a slim bristled toothbrush (Nano silver slim care) and a V-shaped toothbrush (Oral-B). Plaque index, gingival index and bleeding index were recorded at the beginning of the study (baseline), 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks after new toothbrushes were supplied and the results were analyzed statistically. Results: No statistically significant differences were found for plaque index, gingival index and bleeding index between toothbrush groups during the 6 weeks. Plaque and gingival indices were decreased at 2 weeks and 4 weeks but increased at 6 weeks in both toothbrush groups. Bleeding index in the V-shaped toothbrush group showed the lowest value at 2 weeks then increased at 4 weeks and 6 weeks but in the slim bristled toothbrush group decreased from 2 weeks through 6 weeks to under baseline levels. Patients in their twenties had significantly lower values than teenagers in the slim bristled toothbrush group (p < 0.013). Conclusions: The results would suggest that both of the toothbrushes are equally effective but the use of a slim bristled toothbrush may be of benefit in promoting gingival health for fixed orthodontic appliance patients in their twenties and over.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate whether warm-needling is more effective than acupuncture in relieving the pain and improving the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis(OA). Methods : 76 volunteers with knee OA participated in the study. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received warm-needling(n=38), while the other group received acupuncture(n=38). Sixteen sessions of warm-needling or acupuncture were conducted on the pain region of each problematic knee over a period of 8 weeks. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC) scores, physical health score based on the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36) and the Global Assessment(PGA) was measured. Results : Compared to the acupuncture group, the warm-needling group showed a significant decrease in pain, function, and total WOMAC scores according to the Mann-Whitney U-test. The PGA scores of the warm-needling group also showed a significant improvement compared to the acupuncture group. Conclusions : Warm-needling showed a greater pain relief effect on knee OA compared to the acupuncture group. These findings suggest that warm-needling may be a promising alternative therapy for treating knee OA.

  • Objective : This systematic review aimed to investigate the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in patients with stroke Methods : PubMed and NDSL databases were employed to review literature published between January 2009 and December 2018. The main search terms were "Transcranial direct current stimulation" or "tDCS," "Constraint-induced movement therapy" or "CIMT," "Upper extremity function," "Upper limb," and "Stroke." Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 6 articles were selected. Furthermore, intervention effects on upper extremity function, activities of daily living, and cortical activity were assessed. Results : The current intensity, application time, and protocol of the CIMT varied the between studies. However, the intervention procedures to perform CIMT immediately after transcranial direct current stimulation was the same. Transcranial direct current stimulation combined with CIMT was effective in improving upper limb function and activities of daily living in patients with stoke and had a significant effect on cerebral cortex activation. Conclusions : This study provides information on transcranial direct current stimulation combined with CIMT for use by clinical therapists. Further studies are needed to standardize the stimulation time, current intensity, and electrode attachment position. Furthermore, randomized controlled trials, including long-term follow up, are needed for larger populations using the most appropriate CIMT protocol.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of Ring-Back-Tone(RBT) music on the evaluation of the phone-call receiver's personality in dimensions of Openness, Extroversion, and Neuroticism. In a preliminary test, the subjects listened to 17 RBT music stimuli in random order and assessed the personality associated with liking for each music(N=15). Among the 17 RBTs, three were selected to be used in Experiments I and II and they were distinguished from each other in terms of the three personality dimensions(p<0.001). In Experiment I, the subjects were divided into four groups and were asked to make a call to interview an unknown receiver(N=60). Different RBT music was installed depending on the group to which each subject belonged. It was found that different RBT influences the caller's evaluation of the receiver's personality, supporting Hypothesis 1(p<0.001). Moreover, the ratings of the receiver's were highly correlated with those of the RBT music stimuli in terms of Openness(r=0.722, p<0.001) and Extroversion(r=0.753, p<0.001). In Experiment II, an identical experiment design was applied for a new group of subjects who were acquainted with the receiver(N=40). It was hypothesized that previous knowledge about a person would weaken the RBT effect. The results showed that RBT exerted no effect on the evaluation of the receiver's personality when the caller knew the receiver. It was also found that 12 personality traits, where each of the three personality dimensions is described by four traits, facilitated assessment of the character of the RBT music as well as the personality of the receiver.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Opuntia humifusa supplementation on lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein expression at resting state in various organs of rats fed a high-fat diet. Sixteen Sprague-Dawley male rats, 6 weeks of age, were randomly divided into two groups: a control diet group (CG, n=8) and an experimental diet group (EG, n=8). They were given a high-fat diet (CG) or a diet supplemented with 5% of O. humifusa (EG) for 8 weeks. The results showed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of the kidney and the liver were significantly lower in the EG group than in the CG group (p<0.01). In addition, the MDA levels in the skeletal muscle of the EG group tended to be lower than those in the CG group, but this difference was not significant. The Cu, Zn-SOD protein expression in the kidney of the EG group was significantly increased compared with that of the CG group (p<0.01). The Mn-SOD protein expression in the skeletal muscle of the EG group was significantly increased compared with that of the CG group (p<0.01). These results suggest that O. humifusa supplementation has antioxidative properties, which are exerted in a specific organ manner, and that it inhibits the action of lipid peroxidation and the expression of SOD in rats fed a high-fat diet.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of hamstring muscle relaxation and craniosacral reciprocal movement by using S. O. T. (sacrooccipital technique) categoryⅠ block-intervention process. 26 subjects with heel tension were randomly divided into two groups (EXP=13 and CON=13). This study carried out the category I block-intervention process on the experimental group and the false block-intervention process on the control group. Then, this study measured the sit-and-reach and sacral reciprocal movement of subjects before and after the intervention. The result values before and after the intervention were analyzed through ANCOVA by using SPSS PC Program (Ver. 20.0). In both investigations, the degree of hamstring muscle relaxation and the change of sacral reciprocal movement, there were statistically significant differences between the experimental group and the control group as [F(1, 23)=7.73, p<0.5] and [F(1, 23)=7.07, p<.05] respectively. According to the results of this study, it is expected that S. O. T category I bllock-intervention technique will have positive effect on both hamstring muscle relaxation and craniosacral reciprocal movement.

  • Purpose : The present study examined how changes in cerebral hemodynamics in newborn piglets with bilirubin infusion can be evaluated by near infrared sepctroscopy(NIRS). Methods : Seventeen newborn piglets were randomly divided into the following three experimental groups : six in the control group(CG); seven in the bilirubin infusion group(BG), and four in the bilirubin infusion with 7-nitroindazole group(NG). To achieve the concentration of bilirubin above 20 mg/dL, we injected a bolus of 40 mg/kg of bilirubin intravenously, followed by 30 mg/kg/hr of bilirubin continuous intravenous infusion. All groups were monitored with cerebral hemodynamics using near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) and their brain cortexes were harvested and the activities of $Na^+$, $K^+$-ATPase, level of conjugated dienes, ATP and phosphocreatine(PCr) were determined biochemically. Results : No changes took place in CG. In BG and NG, base excess, pH, and MABP decreased, and lactate level in blood increased. Cerebral $Na^+$, $K^+$-ATPase activity and ATP, PCr level in BG significantly decreased and conjugated dienes increased compared to CG. These abnormalities observed in the BG were significantly improved in the NG. In continuous NIRS monitoring, [$HbO_2$], [HbT], and [HbD] in BG were significantlly decreased compared to CG. However these abnormalities between NG and CG were not significantly different. There were no significant differences in $ScO_2$ between the study groups. Conclusion : Our study suggests cerebral hemodynamic changes could be monitored by non-invasive NIRS in newborn piglets with bilirubin infusion.

  • The purpose of this study lies in examining how sling lumbar stabilization exercise affects static standing balance of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. The subjects were forty patients who were diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. They were randomly assigned either to a experimental group (n=20) that received sling lmubar stabilization exercise program or to a control group (n=20) that received only education. Data were obtained for each patient from total sway path and sway velocity in standing on both feet with eyes closed and standing on both feet with eyes open were measured, using balance performance monitor. All variables were measured at pre- and post-exercise. There were significantly differences between the both groups for all variables at post-exercise (p<.05). The experimental group showed a significantly decreases in all variables at pre- and post-exercise (p<.05). But the control group showed a no significantly differences. These results revealed that sling lumbar stabilization exercise improved static standing balance, by reducing COP(center of pressure) sway path and sway velocity of idiopathic scoliosis patients, and it is expected that sling lumbar stabilization exercise will be used as balance enhancement exercise intervention for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of visual biofeedback simulation training for patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries. Fifteen people with an ASIA impairment scale of C and D, according to the intervention method, were studied. They were randomly divided into two groups, seven people in the experimental group and eight people in the control group. They were studied three times a week for six weeks using a Tetrax Interactive Balance System, for a total of eighteen times, and each test took fifteen minutes. Paired t-tests were used to evaluate the changes before and after intervention. The difference between the groups was compared using an independent t-test. The experimental group showed significantly increased general stability, fall risk index, weight distribution (A, C, D, LEFT, HEEL) and weight distribution index, except for synchronization AC, BD. However, the control group only showed significantly increased weight distribution (A, C, LEFT). In a variation, experimental and control groups showed significantly increased weight distribution (A, B, C, HEEL), general stability, fall risk index and synchronization AD. Consequently, it was found that visual biofeedback simulation training was effective for the balance ability of incomplete spinal cord injury patients, and further studies are required.

  • The purpose of this study was to find effect of upper extremities exercises using two different supporting surface, mobile surface and fixed surface in sitting on the function of upper extremities for the patients with stroke. The study period was between July 5, 2012 and August 1 2012. The subjects were 20 subjects who were randomly divided into two groups : (1) mobile surface group, (2) fixed surface group. The mobile surface group performed bilateral upper extremities exercise sitting on balance disc, and the fixed surface group was provided fixed surface chair. Both groups performed 30 minutes 5 times per a week for 4weeks. The Manual Functional Test(MFT) and Fugl-Meyer Motor Function Assessment(FMA) was used to measure the differences of upper extremity functions before and after interventions. The results of this study were as follows. First, Both groups, mobile surface group and fixed surface group showed the significant increase(p<.05) in upper extremity function. Second, the improvements of the hand function in mobile surface group showed significant difference comparing with the group with fixed surface. Therefore, the results of this study showed the bilateral hand exercise program on mobile surface is more effective than the fixed surface bilateral hand exercise program for the patients with stroke.
