  • The typical missions for the current stand-off UAVs are surveillance and reconnaissance. On the other hand, the primary mission for the future UCAS will be combat mission such as SEAD under the man-made ultimately hostile environment including SAM, antiaircraft artillery, threat radar, etc. Therefore, one of the most important challenges in UCAS design is improvement of survivability. The current studies for aircraft combat survivability are focused on the improvement of susceptibility and vulnerability of manned aircraft system. Although the survivability design methodology for UCAS might be very similar to the manned combat system but there are some differences in mission environment, system configuration, performance between manned and unmanned systems. So the parameters and their sensitivities which affect aircraft combat survivability are different in qualitatively and quantitatively. The susceptibility related parameters for F-16 C/D and X-45A as an example of manned and unmanned system are identified and the susceptibility parameter sensitivities are analyzed by using Monte-Carlo Simulation in this study.

  • Due to the lack of a system that can detect/identify and strike North Korea's small unmanned aerial vehicles, no immediate response was made. In order to solve the problem of response, we should prepare for threats by developing weapons systems that can be immediately hit when identifying small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle detection radar and creating specialized research organizations for research and development of equipment.

  • Every year in the ocean, various accidents occur frequently and illegal fishing is rampant. Moreover, their size and frequency are also increasing. In order to reduce losses of life or property caused by these, it is necessary to have a means to perform remote monitoring quickly. As an effective platform of such monitoring means, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is receiving the spotlight. In these situations where marine accidents or illegal fishing occur, main targets of monitoring are ships. In this study, we propose a UAV based ship monitoring system and suggest a method of determining ship positions using UAV multi-sensory data. In the proposed method, firstly, the position and attitude of individual images are determined by using the pre-performed system calibration results and GPS/INS data obtained at the time when images were acquired. In addition, after the ship being detected automatically or semi-automatically from the individual images, the absolute coordinates of the detected ships are determined. The proposed method was applied to actual data measured at 200 m, 350 m, and 500 m altitude, the ship position can be determined with accuracy of 4.068 m, 8.916 m, and 13.734 m, respectively. According to the minimum standard of a hydrographical survey, the ship positioning results of 200 m and 350 m data satisfy grade S and the results of 500 m data do grade 1a, where the accuracy is required for positioning the coastline and topography less significant to navigation order. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed method can be effectively used for various purposes of marine monitoring or surveying.

  • Sonobuoys are disposable devices that utilize sound waves for information gathering, detecting engine noises, and capturing various acoustic characteristics. They play a crucial role in accurately detecting underwater targets, making them effective detection systems in anti-submarine warfare. Existing sonobuoy deployment methods in multistatic systems often rely on fixed patterns or heuristic-based rules, lacking efficiency in terms of the number of sonobuoys deployed and operational time due to the unpredictable mobility of the underwater targets. Thus, this paper proposes an optimal sonobuoy placement strategy for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to overcome the limitations of conventional sonobuoy deployment methods. The proposed approach utilizes reinforcement learning in a simulation-based experimental environment that considers the movements of the underwater targets. The Unity ML-Agents framework is employed, and the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm is utilized for UAV learning in a virtual operational environment with real-time interactions. The reward function is designed to consider the number of sonobuoys deployed and the cost associated with sound sources and receivers, enabling effective learning. The proposed reinforcement learning-based deployment strategy compared to the conventional sonobuoy deployment methods in the same experimental environment demonstrates superior performance in terms of detection success rate, deployed sonobuoy count, and operational time.

  • As part of the integration phases in developing a UAV, a System Integration Laboratory (SIL) has been developed to provide integrated test capability for the verification of avionics system requirements. The SIL has realized primary functions that are common in manned aircraft SIL's, and specialized laying stress on test data visualization and test automation under the closed-loop structure of the ground control simulation, aircraft simulation and flight simulation components. Those design results have led to easy and sure verification of lots of complex requirements of the UAV avionics system. The functions and performances of the SIL have been proved in four gradational test steps and checked to operate successfully in aircraft System Integration Test Environment for the integration of UAV ground station and aircraft.

  • Recently, it is reported that the Korean Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) interface protocol (K-4586) based on STANAG-4586 is being developed to secure interoperability between UAVs. The core elements of the K-4586-based Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) are the Core UAV Control System (CUCS), Vehicle Specific Module (VSM), Data Link Interface (DLI), and C4I systems. In UAS based on K-4586, the DLI function for transmitting and receiving messages to link UAVs is included in VSM and CUCS respectively. The Generator/Analyzer (G/A) tool is an apparatus that is developed for protocol conformance verification for VSM and CUCS, and G/A tools with DLI message transmitting and receiving should be developed separately. Core applications (VSM, CUCS, DLI) and G/A tools based on K-4586 may be developed independently depending on the developers. If the DLI message modules are different for each developer, the scope and results of protocol conformance verification will be dissimilar, and some problems may happen during system integration. In this study, common DLI message module based on the API was designed to provide the DLI message transmitting and receiving function necessary to the development of core applications and the protocol conformance verification tool of based on K-4586. When applying the proposed common DLI message module, it can be expected to shorten the UAS system development period and reduce costs, and ensure conformance of protocol. In this paper, the design and implementation method for the common DLI message module based on API was proposed and the results of functional test was described.
