  • In this paper, we develop the ground risk model of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operation to quantify the ground risk when the UAV falls to the ground during the intended operation in case of UAV failure. The ground risk is computed by using the UAV failure probability, the probability of impact a person when UAV falls to the ground, the probability of fatality when UAV strikes the person. We mathematically derive each probability to evaluate the ground risk of UAV operation. Also, the population density map, building to land ratio map, car traffic database is used to estimate the number of people exposed to collision with UAV. Finally, we assumed the operations of a UAV with two paths in Daejeon city and evaluate the ground risk of each UAV operations.

  • In this paper, we quantitatively analyzed the required UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) failure rate of small UAV (≤25kg) based on the harm to human caused by UAV crash to fly over the populated area. We compute the number of harm to human when UAV falls to the ground at certain descent point by using population density, car traffic, building to land ratio, number of floors of building data of urban area and UAV descent trajectory modeling. Based on this, the maximum allowable UAV failure rate is calculated to satisfy the Target Level of Safety(TLS) for each UAV descent point. Then we can generate the failure rate requirement in the form of map. Finally, we divide UAV failure rate into few categories and analyze the possible flight area for each failure rate categories. Considering the Youngwol area, it is analyzed that the UAV failure rate of at least 10-4 (failure/flight hour) is required to access the residential area.

  • As unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been utilized for military operation, efficient ways for controlling UAV has been necessary. In particular, instead of conventional approach using console control, speech recognition based UAV control is essential for military environments in which rapid command operation is required. But research on this novel approach is not actively studied yet. In this study, we introduce efficient ways of speech recognition system operation for voice-driven UAV control, focusing on mission command control from manned aircraft rather than ground control center. We propose an efficient way of system operation for UAV control in cooperation of aircraft and UAV, and verify its efficiency via speech recognition experiment.

  • As usage of UAV becomes more common, a basic requirements on the system are changing. Existent system did function embodiment by major object, but current UAV puts bigger weight to availability. Therefore, all the advanced countries in UAV technologies put great efforts in reliability analysis techniques and source collection of system, and reflect the result in design. The authors are developing a flight control system for a UAV and using the reliability analysis techniques in the process. This paper introduces basic reliability analysis techniques and results of analysis for a small UAV flight control system that is developing present. The result plans efficiency enlargement UAV development and operation process.

  • In an complicated battlefield environment, information from enemy's camp is an important factor in carrying out military operations. For obtaining this information, the number of UAVs that can be deployed to the mission without our forces' loss and at low cost is increasing. Because the mission environment has anti-aircraft weapons, mission space is needed for UAV to guarantee survivability without being killed. The concept of Configuration Space is used to define the mission space considering with range of weapons and detect range of UAV. UAV must visit whole given area to obtain the information and perform Coverage Path Planning for this. Based on threats to UAV and importance of information that will be obtained, area that UAV should visit first is defined. Grid Map is generated and mapping threat information to each grid for UAV path planning. On this study, coverage conditions and path planning procedures are presented based on the threat information on Grid Map, and mission space is expanded to improve detection efficiency. Finally, simulations are performed, and results are presented using the suggested UAV path planning method in this study.

  • Disasters are causing significant damage to the lives and property of our society and are recognized as social problems that need to be solved nationally and globally. The 4th industrial revolution technologies affecting society as a whole such as the Internet of Things(IoT), Artificial Intelligence(AI), Drones(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), and Big Data are continuously absorbed into the disaster and safety industries as scientific and technological tools for solving social problems. Very soon, twenty-nine domestic UAV-related organizations/companies will complete the construction of a multicopter type small UAV integrated system ('17~'20) that can be operated at disaster and security sites. The current work considers and proposes the mid-to-long term R&D direction of disaster UAV as a strategic asset of the national disaster response system. First, the trends of disaster and safety industry and policy are analyzed. Subsequently, the development status and future plans of small UAV, securing shortage technology, and strengthening competitiveness are analyzed. Finally, step-by-step R&D direction of disaster UAV in terms of development strategy, specialized mission, platform, communication, and control and operation is proposed.

  • The purpose of this study was to address a Remote Airborne Control Simulator that could simulate manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T mission) for fixed wing UAV. With rapid technological development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the mission capability of UAV has tremendously grown. The role of UAV extends from simple reconnaissance to highly automated wingman. Accordingly, the requirement of UAV ground simulator should be modified as well to meet function requirements for simulating a MUM-T mission. A developed remote airborne control simulator was developed for conducting fixed wing UAV MUM-T operation simulations on the ground. The newest MUM-T examples, usage, and application of the developed remote airborne control simulator for MUM-T simulation are also presented in this study.

  • In this paper, we classified a flight pattern of unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) which will be operating in UTM system and analyzed its flight pattern by purpose of use. Flight patterns of UAV are sorted into three patterns which are circling, monitoring and delivery. We considered four cases of industry areas using UAV which are agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, public safety & security(p.s.s) and delivery. It is necessary to build a simulation model as a verification tool for applying the flight pattern according to the use of UAV to the real UTM system. Therefore, we propose the simulation model of UAV with updating states over time. We applied simulation to UAV monitoring flight pattern, and confirmed that the flight was done by the given input data. The simulation model will be used in the future to verify that the UAV has various flight patterns and can operate safely and efficiently for the intended use.

  • High Altitude Long Endurance(HALE) solar powered UAV is the vehicle that flies for a long time as solar power energy sources. It can be used to replace satellites or provide continuous service because it can perform long-term missions at high altitudes. Due to the property of the mission, it is very important for HALE solar powered UAV to have maximum flight time. It is required for mission performance to fly at high altitudes continuously except a return for temporary maintenance. Therefore mission availability time analysis is a critical factor in the commercialization of HALE solar powered UAV. In this paper, we presented an analytic model and logic for available time analysis based on the design parameters of HALE solar powered UAV. This model can be used to analyze the possibility of applying UAV according to the UAV's mission in concept design before the UAV detail design stage.

  • In this paper, we propose a heterogenous mission allocation technique for multi-UAV system based on discrete event modeling. We model a series of heterogenous mission creation, mission allocation, UAV departure, mission completion, and UAV maintenance and repair process as a mathematical discrete event model. Based on the proposed model, we then optimize the number of UAVs required to operate in a given scenario. To validate the optimized number of UAVs, the simulations are executed repeatedly, and their results are analyzed. The proposed mission allocation technique can be used to efficiently utilize limited UAV resources, and allow the human operator to establish an optimal mission plan.
