To understand the significance of urea in the pool size of nitrogenous nutrients and in nitrogen (N) requirements of primary producers in and estuarine system of Mankyung and Dongjin rivers nutrients, and urea decomposition rates between June 1992 and February 1994. Urea concentration during the study period ranged from undetectable to 12.5 ug-at. N 1/SUP -1/, contributing to 0-96% (mean of 11%) of the total nitrogenous nutrients in the study area. Urea comprised a major component of the total nitrogenous nutrients when concentration of total nitrogenous nutrients was low. Urea decomposition rates in the water column ranged from 0.02 to 5.77 nM h/SUP -1/, and netplankton was the major decomposer of urea. Vertical distributions of urea decomposition rates in the water column showed generally small variabilities (i.e. < 3 fold). The decomposition rates of urea in the MD estuary would supply 0.2 ∼88.4% of phytoplankton N requirements. The major contribution of urea to phytoplankton N requirements was found when phytoplankton production was low (<50 mg C m/SUP -2/d/SUP -1/).
To assess fertilizer value of an quasi-aerobically fermented liquid clipped-grass fertilizer, aerobic incubation experiment using two texturally contrasting loam (L) and sandy loam (SL) soils was conducted for 60 days to investigate temporal variations in N mineralization pattern of the liquid fertilizer applied. To do so, the quasi-aerobically fermented liquid clipped-grass fertilizer was prepared, applied to each soil at a rate of 200 kg-N $ha^{-1}$ and aerobically $25^{\circ}C$ in the dark. During incubation, soil water content was adjusted to field moisture capacity (-33 kPa of soil matric potential) by adding distilled water as necessary to maintain their initial weights. At desired time of incubation (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 days after incubation), soil was sampled and analyzed for inorganic nitrogen ($NH_4{^+}$-N and $NO_3{^-}$-N) concentrations, pH, EC, total carbon contents and total nitrogen contents. Concentrations of $NH_4{^+}$-N began to decrease right after incubation for L soils, and 10 days after incubation for SL soils, while those of $NO_3{^-}$-N began to increase onset of $NH_4{^+}$-N disappearance. The results of this study showed that quasi-aerobically fermented liquid clipped-grass fertilizer could serve as an alternative to chemical N fertilizer.
Mycophenolic acid blocking the synthesis of xanthosine monophosphate is a nonnucleoside inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase. Therefore mycopholoic acid is a drug currently used as immunosuppressive agent in transplantation of heart, kidney and liver. Mycophenolic acid has been industrially produced through fermentation process by fungus Penicillium brevi-compactum. In this study, the profile of mycophenolic acid fermentation was observed in 5L-jar fermentor to investigate the utilization of carbon and nitrogen sources and the production of mycophenolic acid. It was investigated that what kind of carbon sources was better to cell growth and mycophenolic acid production. Fructose was the best carbon source for mycophenolic acid fermentation, but it is the most expensive one. Thereafter molasses containing sucrose as the supply source of fructose was confirmed to be the best carbon source for the industrial production. Use of molasses increased the fermentation yield of mycophenolic acid more than two times higher than glucose. It was confirmed that urea was the best inorganic nitrogen source, which did not give rise to sudden drop of culture pH. Addition of urea increased the fermentation yield of mycophenolic acid about 3.6 times higher than addition of ammonium nitrate as control. Casein, peptone and casamino acid originated from milk protein increased the fermentation yield of mycophenolic acid about 3.4 times higher than control. Peptone and casamino acid, which are casein hydrolysates, increased cell growth considerably as well.
This experiment was conducted in the field to investigate the effects of mulched condition on nutrient's mineralization and its mobility as affected by environmental changes (soil moisture and soil temperature) in the plow layer. 1. Nitrogen mineralization was faster owing to the prevention of evaporation and the increase of soil temperature in the poly ethylene mulched plot. As a result, nitrate form of nitrogen was much earlier available for plant in mulched plot than in non mulched plot. 2. Available $P_2O_5$ content in the plow layer was kept highest in the fertilized zone (10-20 cm depth) regardless of difference between mulched and non mulched condition, and was nearly constant without showing difference between planting and non planting of tobacco due to the lower availability of phosphorus by tobacco. 3. Potassium applied in the plow layer was remained a large quantity until the latter growth stage resulting in the lower recovery of potassium by tobacco. 4. Mineralized nutrients such as $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, and K in the plow layer of mulched plot were transported from the fertilized layer (10-20 cm depth) and accumulated to the surface layer (0-10 cm depth) as the growing time goes by, but those in non mulched plot were distributed to the deeper layer. 5. Mobility of available nutrients in the plow layer was If order as $NO_3-N$$$\geq_-$$$NH_4-N$ > K > available $P_2O_5$. 6. Leaching degree of mineralized nutrients in the mulched plot was much lower than in the non mulched plot.
To elucidate the effect of Amo-1618(4-hydroxyl-5-isopropyl-2-methlphenyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, 1-piperidine carboxylate) known as a kind of growth retardant, on the growth, grain yield, increasing the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer, behavior of mineral nutritions and the rate of phosphorus utilization, this experiment was conducted pot culture method in a vinyl house. Two nitrogen level, namely, practical nitrogen level(1 N) and three times nitrogen level(3 N) was made and labelled double-calcium-superphosphate $Ca(H_2P^{32}O_4)_2.\;2H_2O)$ as a source of radioactive phosphorus(P-32) was employed $80\;{\mu}c/pot$, respectively. Rice seedlings, variety 'Suwon No. 82', was transplanted to a 1/50,000 a china pot on June 13 in 1968. For treatment, at early stage of tillering, 10,000 ppm solution of Amo-1618 was foliar sprayed only one time. The Duncan's new mutiple-range test was adopted for statistical analysis evaluating experimental data at 5% level significance. The results obtained may be summarized as follows; 1) No significant difference was found among the treatments in plant height, but in plot of Amo-1618 treatment and 3 N level, number of tillers was significantly increased than that of others. 2) Weight of 10,000 kernels and seed-setting rate was also remarkably increased in same treatment above. 3) Grain yield per pot was significantly increased in Amo-1618 and 3 N level application. This results seemed to be due to the increased the factors on the yield. 4) Contents of nitrogen and phosphorus per cent in the grain was likewise increased in Amo-1618 and 3 N application. There is, however, no difference among treatments in the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in the leaves and culms of rice plants. 5) On the other hand, the contents of potassium and magnesium, no distinctly tendeny showed among treatments. 6) The rate of phosphorus utilization was significantly increased in the plot of Amo-1618 and 3 N application.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of winter forage rye and green manure hairy vetch on soil mineral nitrogen and corn nitrogen uptake. Soil nitrate at corn seeding decreased slightly with cultivation of winter rye, but soil nitrate did not decreased by cultivation of winter hairy vetch. Soil nitrate nitrogen increased 60~70 kgN/ha higher by hairy vetch green manure than winter rye and fallow at 6-leaf and harvest stage of corn, respectively, and much soil nitrate nitrogen such as 85, 125 kgN/ha was remained at N fertilizer 100, 200 kgN/ha of hairy vetch green manure at harvesting time, respectively. Corn yield was not different among treatments of winter crop and N rate, but nitrogen concentration of corn stover increased by hairy vetch green manure. Increase of total corn nitrogen uptake by hairy vetch green manure was 50~60 kgN/ha compared with winter rye and fallow. It is thought that basal fertilizer nitrogen 100 kgN/ha could be reduced by hairy vetch green manure in considering soil nitrate and nitrogen uptake at harvesting time.
Water pollution status of the irrigation water, inorganic nutrient contents of rice plant, relationship between water quality of irrigation water and inorganic nutrient contents of rice plant, and nitrogen supply by irrigation water at six sites of pumping stations in Kimhae plain were investigated. The results were as follows : 1. Average values of water components analyzed at all pumping stations were in the range of 6.5-7.0 pH, 0.6-7.7ppm DO, 4.4-63.5ppm BOD, 7.3-73.9ppm COD, 1.84-16.22ppm $NH_4$-N, 1.22-15.49ppm $NO_3$-N and 0.07-1.35ppm $PO_4$-P respectively. 2. Comparatively heavy polluted sites were Sikman, Bongrim and Noksan, and less polluted sites were Daejeo, Myeongje and Jangyou, judging from BOD, COD and $NH_4$-N of the irrigation water. 3. Nitrogen supply by irrigated water for a year were 6.82Kg/10a, 5.98Kg/10a, 6.64Kg/10a, 2.31kg/10a, 6.22Kg/10a and 2.54Kg/10a in Daejeo, Sikman, Bongrim, Myeongji and Noksan area, respectively. 4. Positive correlation was observed between ammonium nitrogen of the water and total nitrogen contents of rice plant. Total nitrogen contents of rice plant were higher in Sikman, Borgim and Noksan area than in the other areas.
Deposition of atmospheric N that is depleted in $^{15}N$ has shown to decrease N isotope ratio ($^{15}N/^{14}N$,expressed as ${\delta}^{15}N$) of forest samples such as tree rings, foliage, and total soil-N. However, its effect on ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral soil-N which is biologically active N pool has never been tested. In this study, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N($NH{_4}^+$ and $NO_3{^-}$) in forest soils from organic and two depths of mineral soil layers (0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40cm depth) of Pinus densiflora stands located at two distinct areas (rural and industrial areas) in southern Korea was analyzed to investigate if there is any difference in ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N between these areas. We also evaluated potential N loss of the study sites using ${\delta}^{15}N$ of mineral N. Across the soil layers, the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ ranged from +8.9 to +24.8‰ in the rural area and from +4.4 to +13.8‰ in the industrial area. Soils from organic layer (+4.4‰) and mineral layer between 0 and 20 cm (+13.8‰) of industrial area showed significantly lower ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NH{_4}^+$ than those of rural area (+8.9 and +24.3‰, respectively), probably indicating the greater contribution of $^{15}N$-depleted $NH{_4}^+$ from atmospheric deposition to forest in the industrial area than in the rural area. Meanwhile, ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ was not different between the rural and industrial areas, probably because ${\delta}^{15}N$ of $NO_3{^-}$ is more likely to be altered by the N loss that causes $^{15}N$ enrichment of the remaining soil N pool. Compared with the ${\delta}^{15}N$ of soil mineral N reported by other studies (from -10.9 to +15.6‰ for $NH{_4}^+$ and -14.8 to +5.6‰ for $NO_3{^-}$), the ${\delta}^{15}N$ observed in our study was substantially high, suggesting that the study sites are more subject to the N loss. It was concluded that $NH{_4}^+$ rather than $NO_3{^-}$ can conserve the ${\delta}^{15}N$ signature of atmospheric N deposition in forest ecosystems.
This study was conducted to elucidate the translocation pattern of photosynthate labelled by $^{14}C$ in rice cultivars and the effects of nutrient composition on the translocation in rice plant during ripening, Showing coincidence between the grain filling rate and the translocation of $^{14}C$ into the grain during ripening period, the translocation patterns of cultivars tested were grouped by three; 1) the late dominance type (Akibare), 2) the early dominance type (Taebaegbyeo, Chupungbyeo), and 3) the semi-late dominance type (Milyang #23, Milyang #42, and Yushin). The negative relation ship existed between the translocation ratio of $^{14}C$ into the grain and the nitrogen content in plants, but not significant, The nutrient depletion of P, K, Ca, Mg, and Si in water medium from the panicle initiation to the heading stage resulted in the decrease of grain weight by 4 to 12 percent and the increase of translocation of $^{14}C$ into grain assimilated at heading. The effect of resupply of these nutrients after heading was recognized by the order of P>Mg>K and Ca. But the effect of Si resupply was hardly recognized in increasing grain weight. The photosynthetic rate was greatly affected by the nitrogen status and the depletion of P, K, and Ca decreased the photosynthetic rate in single leaf at heading, while the depletion of Si enhanced the rate.
1. Ginseng field and virgin soils, to which Yakto, washed Yakto, litters (deciduous and coniferous trees) and bone meal were applied, were incubated at 60% of field capacity of the soils to shed light on the production of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ through mineralization of the organic materials being the nitrogen sources for Korean ginseng. 2. Total nitrogen content mineralized in the soils, to which the following organic materials were applied, was:bone meal>Yakto${\gg}$litter (deciduous trees)> washed Yakto, litter (coniferous trees). The content increased with incubation time in all the virgin and ginseng field soils excepting only the virgin soils applied with washed Yakto and litters of which the contents decreased. A large part of nitrogen mineralized in the virgin and ginseng field soils to which Yakto was applied was nitrate form, while a half ginseng field soils and a considerable part in the other virgin soils was ammonium form in the other treatments. 3. $NH_4-N$ content produced in the virgin and ginseng field soils applied with bone meal increased with the time, while it decreased in the other treatments. And the content in the soils applied with bone meal was very high. 4. $NO_3-N$ content showed a continuous increase during the incubation time in all treatments of ginseng field soils and only in the virgin soil to which Yakto was applied, wherease it showed almost no change in the other treatments of virgin soils. And the content in the soils applied with Yakto was very high. 5. Yakto was expected to supply nitrate enough to meet amounts of nitrogen required by ginseng with different ages and also expected to increase in soil fertility, while bone meal was expected only to supply much nitrogen of which a considerable part was ammonium form.
