This paper summarizes the processing inorganic continuous fibers from Korean minerals. Continuous filament fibers have been produced from two rocks, basalt and quartz diorite porphyry(QDP), by melting method. The essence of the method is that the vitrified materials was placed into the bushing, platinum/rhodium alloy crucible with a nozzle, and heated electrically to a temperature which allowed fiber spinning. Vitrified basalt without additive was suitable for producing continuous filament fiber. However doping quartz diorite porphyry with boric oxide yielded a material which could be pulled continuously.
A new concept of an inorganic foaming process at low temperature was demonstrated for the production of inorganic thermal insulating materials with the properties of flexible light-weight, the advantages of organic-based thermal insulation material. The foaming process was proceeded by establishing a skeleton of the foam body by using inorganic fibrous sepiolite and aluminum silicate. A cavity was formed by the expansion of fibrous skeleton body, by the gas which was generated from foaming agent at low temperature. Then the multi-vesicular expanded perlite with low thermal conductivity was filled into the cavity in a skeleton of the foam body. Finally through these overall process, a new inorganic foamed body could be obtained at low temperature without the hot melting of inorganic materials. In order to achieve this object, various preparations such as fibrous sepiolite fibrillation process, heat treatment process of the fibrous slurry were needed, and the optimal compositional condition of slurry was required. The foam body produced showed the properties of flexible light-weight thermal insulation materials such as bulk density, yield strength, flexural strength, and high heat resistance.
Zeolites with excellent adsorption capacity of volatile organic compounds were attached onto inorganic fibers which were the raw materials of honeycomb-type adsorbers. The amounts of zeolite particles attached onto the fibers considerably increased by treating them with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, or hydrofluoric acid. Various functional groups such as chloropropyl, aminopropyl and epoxy groups of silane compounds, and amine groups of polyethylenimine were employed as covalent linkage materials between the fibers and zeolite particles. The state of the fibers coated with zeolite particles was examined by scanning electron microscopy, and the amounts of zeolite particles bound to the fibers were estimated from their BET surface areas. The largest amount was obtained when polyethylenimine was employed as a linkage material. Polyethylenimine was the most effective for attaching zeolite particles onto the inorganic fibers among various linkers employed.

The effects of single cells of carrot or radish on the fecal excretion, mineral absorption rate and structure of small intestine and colon were investigated in rats fed 5% single cell diet for 4 weeks. Carrot contained 28.76% of total dietary fiber and 21.45% of insoluble dietary fiber, and radish contained 23.14% of total dietary fiber and 16.77% of insoluble dietary fiber on a dry weight basis. Total dietary fiber contents of the single cell were 44.68% for carrot, 48.0% for radish. Absorption rates of magnesium were higher in the carrot and radish single cell groups than the other groups. Cellulose significantly increased fecal weight and weight of small intestine. The consumption of cellulose and single cells decreased digestibility of lipid. The length of colon were longer in the carrot and the radish group than the other groups. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that small intestine microvilli with leaf-shaped were seen in cellulose and single cell fed groups. These results suggest that the diet containing 5% single cells of carrot or radish increases the digestibility of dietary fiber, weight gain, and fecal output and shorten the gastrointestinal transit time.

This study was aimed to evaluate the estimated availabilities and contents of major minerals (Ca, P, and Mg) in seven different seaweeds using the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) which could bind minerals. The estimated availability was calculated by subtracting the NDF-bound major mineral contents from the total major mineral contents of seaweeds. Average estimated availability of Ca, P, and Mg contents of seven seaweeds were 96.31, 73.24, and 96.79%, respectively. These results may suggest that seaweeds could be one of the good sources of major minerals for human nutrition because of their high average estimated availabilities of Ca, P, and Mg.

The substantial trace mineral usabilities of seven seaweeds for nutrient evaluation have been studied. As the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) bound trace minerals have been known to be indigestible, these contents were excluded in the digestible trace mineral contents evaluation. Therefore, those four trace mineral contents in seven seaweeds and their NDF-bound contents were estimated. Consequently, the NDF-bound Zn, Cu and Mn contents, except Fe, in seven seaweeds were between 10 and 20% of total trace mineral contents, thus 80~90% of seaweeds trace minerals were observed to be substantially digestible. Although the average estimated availability of Fe in the seaweeds were relatively low, those Zn, Cu and Mn were high in relative to those total contents. Thus, even with consideration of their digestibility, seaweeds could be one of good sources of trace minerals for human nutrition because of their high availabilities of Zn, Cu and Mn.

This study was conducted to estimate the general components, minerals, and dietary fiber contents of Synurus deltoides. S. deltoides contained 81.1% moisture content, and the proportions of crude fat, crude protein, crude ash, and crude fiber were 0.3%, 4.2%, 2.6%, and 3.5%, respectively. Potassium (3,249.1 mg) was the most abundant component among the minerals in S. deltoides. In addition, S. deltoides contained many other minerals, e.g. calcium (854.8 mg), phosphorus (60.3 mg), magnesium (344.7 mg), sodium (57.3 mg), zinc (1.7 mg), iron (30.9 mg), copper (0.8 mg), and manganese (5.8 mg). Almost all of the mineral contents of S. deltoides were higher than those of Aster scaber and Ligularia fischeri, except for zinc, copper, and manganese. Total dietary fiber (TDF), insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), and soluble dietary fiber (SDF) contents of S. deltoides were 42.6 g, 37.9 g, and 4.7 g, respectively, and these were also higher than those of A. scaber and L. fischeri used in this study. These results suggest that S. deltoides may be a valuable nutrient source.
