  • The typical missions for the current stand-off UAVs are surveillance and reconnaissance. On the other hand, the primary mission for the future UCAS will be combat mission such as SEAD under the man-made ultimately hostile environment including SAM, antiaircraft artillery, threat radar, etc. Therefore, one of the most important challenges in UCAS design is improvement of survivability. The current studies for aircraft combat survivability are focused on the improvement of susceptibility and vulnerability of manned aircraft system. Although the survivability design methodology for UCAS might be very similar to the manned combat system but there are some differences in mission environment, system configuration, performance between manned and unmanned systems. So the parameters and their sensitivities which affect aircraft combat survivability are different in qualitatively and quantitatively. The susceptibility related parameters for F-16 C/D and X-45A as an example of manned and unmanned system are identified and the susceptibility parameter sensitivities are analyzed by using Monte-Carlo Simulation in this study.

  • The commissioning of a model-based treatment planning system requires many parameters to fit the measured depth doses and transverse profiles. For the commissioning of the Pinnacle$^3$ system, through the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, the necessary parameters, including the photon spectrum, contaminant electrons, off-axis softening and fluency of photons, were observed. Through the simulation the parameters contained valuable information, but the calculated results of the Pinnacle$^3$ using the MC-derived parameters showed discrepancies with those measured for the off-axis softening and the fluency of photons. Even though the MC calculation produces reasonable values for the commissioning, the thorough physical basis of the Pinnacle$^3$'s commissioning process is needed in order to directly use the MC derived parameters.

  • In this Part 2, the grain growth processes of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics is numerically simulated using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and finite element method (FEM) and the pore sizes are analyzed. As the green ceramics whose thermal conductivities in high temperatures are generally low are sintered by the plasma heat and are rapidly cooled, the grain growth of the sintered body in the center is different from that in the outer. Also, even in the same sintering temperature, the pore size differs according to the pressing pressure. In order to prove the difference, the temperature distribution of the sintered body was analyzed using the finite element method and then the grain growth process associated with pressing pressures and relative densities was simulated using Monte Carlo method.

  • A new load surface method for reliability of caisson type breakwater was proposed. Linear functions for horizontal wave force and uplift force were estimated by using water level and wave height then they were applied to the reliability analysis of breakwater using first order reliability method(FORM). In the numerical example, sliding and overturning failure probability of caisson type breakwater were analyzed by using load surface and they were compared with those by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Consumption of the fuel on the satellite operating in low earth orbit, is increased due to the air resistance and the amount of increase makes the satellite lifetime decrease or the satellite mass risen. Therefore the prediction of drag force of the satellite is important. In the paper, drag force and drag coefficient analysis of the parabolic antenna satellite in low earth orbit using direct simulation monte carlo method (DSMC) is conducted according to the mission altitude and angle of attack. To verify the DSMC simulated rarefied air movement, Starshine satellite drag coefficient according to the altitude and gas-surface interaction are compared with the flight data. Finally, from the analysis results, it leads to appropriate satellite drag coefficient for orbit lifetime calculation.

  • Spark plasma sintering processes have been rapidly introduced recently to improve the quality and productivity of ceramic products and to solve the problem of environmental pollutions. Sintering temperatures and pressing pressures in the spark plasma sintering process are known to be the important factors highly affecting the quality of the ceramics. In this research, in order to see the effects of sintering temperatures and pressing pressures on the grain growth during the spark plasma sintering process of $Al_2O_3$ the grain growth processes associated with sintering temperatures and pressing pressures are simulated by the Monte Carlo method (MCM) and the finite element method (FEM). In this Part 1, the formulations for the simulation, which is the theoretical background of Part 2, are introduced.

  • In order to improve the calculation speed of an integrating-sphere simulator based on a ray-tracing method, parallel processing with OpenMP directive was implemented into the simulator and the randomness of Monte Carlo method was guaranteed by utilizing a parallel random number generator. It was confirmed that simulation results obtained with more than $10^7$ rays showed good agreement with theoretical results within the error range of 0.5%, and that the calculation speed improved as the number of threads increased. Finally, the spatial response distribution functions of a real integrating sphere were simulated and compared with previous results.

  • This paper introduces a performance integration method to predict variation characteristic of a performance function of electromagnetic machines or devices due to manufacturing tolerances. A normalized performance function space and a hybrid mean value technique are adapted to effectively predict mean and variance, which can identify probabilistic distribution of the performance function. To verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, a mathematical problem and a loudspeaker model are tested, and numerical results are compared with those of existing methods such as Monte Carlo simulation and univariate dimension reduction method.
