The adult of the Cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica (Saunder) laid eggs more on mature leaves than on aged and developing leaves. They laid more on leaves than on petiole and stem, and more on the adaxial than on the abaxial surface side of the leaves. Larvae of the Cotton caterpillar showed their preference in the order of the cucumber (Cucumis sativus), gourd (Lagernaria siceraria), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) > oriental melon (Cucumis melon L. var makuwa), wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), melon (Cucumis melo), star cucumber (Sicyos angulatus) > sponge cucumber (Lufa cylindrica), cotton (Gossypium indicum). There were no distinct differences among varieties and lines that were collected and hybridized at the Gochang Watermelon Experiment Station in Korea. There was a positive relationship between the leaf area and the degree of damage by the Cotton caterpillar. The feeding amounts of the Cotton caterpillar excrement were gradually increased to 16-18 days after hatching, after that the amounts of excrement were rapidly decreased.
Entomopathogenic nematodes were effective in the control of the cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica Saunder. P. indica mortality was significantly different depending on nematode species, treatment concentration, and instar. S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain was more effective against P. indica than S. glaseri Dongrae strain, S. longicaudum Nonsan strain, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan isolate, and H. bacteriophora Hamyang strain. When S. carpocapsae was treated with the rate of > 20 infective juveniles (ijs)/larva, mortality was ca. 100% at the 1st-4th instars of P. indica in 72h. $LC_{50}$ of entomopathogenic nematodes were significantly different depending on nematode species. The lowest $LC_{ 50}$ value was obtained by S. carpocapsae with 4.9-8.2 ijs in the 1st-prepupa while the highest $LC_{50}$ by Heterorhabditis sp. with 5.5-21.9 ijs, the shortest LT$_{50}$ value of P. indica was induced by S. carpocapsae when 20 ijs/larva were inoculated. The $LT_{50}$ s were 3.4-9.2h against the 1st-prepupa. The mortality of P. indica in fields was significantly different depending on field condition, nematode concentration, and leaf location. Mortality of P. indica by S. carpocapsae was higher at greenhouse,$ 3$\times$10^{9}$ ijs/ha and upper leaves than at field, 1$\times$10$^{9}$ ijs/ha and lower and middle leaves, respectively.
The seasonal occurrence of insect pests in watermelon cultivated in greenhouses was surveyed in Gochang from 2006 to 2007 considering three seasonal types of culture: forcing culture, semi-forcing culture and retarding culture. Aphis gossypii, mites (Tetranychus urticae+T. kanzawai) and Palpita indica were the most serious pest species in watermelon greenhouse culture. A. gossypii and mites showed high density during the months of June and September in semi-forcing and retarding culture, respectively. Palpita indica was observed only in retarding culture. Leaf damage by Palpita indica was observed from the middle of August and peaked to 79.4% damage in the middle of September. Thrips and whiteflies were captured in high density by the yellow sticky trap in semi-forcing culture and retarding culture but these insects showed low population density in watermelon leaves.
The population density of the Cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica (Saunder) larvae was gradually increased until 10th October and then decreased rapidly after that time at the watermelon culture of rain sheltered house. After 15th October, many larvae went to soil and molted to pupae for the hibernation. Most of pupae were found in pF 2.4 soil moisture condition, but none in pF 1.5 hydro-morphic soil. Most of the pupae were found below 5cm and there was no pupa below 10cm from the soil surface. The sex ratio of the overwintering pupae was 1.09 : 1.00. For the monitoring of the cotton caterpillar adults using sex pheromone compounds, different mixture ratios of each pheromone compound were investigated with (E)-11-hexadecenal and (E, E)-10,12-hexadecadienal. Seven versus three ratio of (I)-11-hexadecenal and (E, E) -10,12-hexadecadienal was more attractive than any other ratio, and then followed by 6 : 4, 8 : 2, 9 : 1, and 5 : 5 mixtures. As a result of monitoring with 7 : 3 mixture of (E)-11-hexadecenal and (E, E)-10,12-hexadecadienal, occurrence peaks of cotton caterpillar adults showed 4 times per year. The first time of adult appearance was late July in 2000 and middle July in 2001 and the highest number was collected on late September.
The external ultrastructural morphology and distribution of antennal sensilla and hair-pencils of Palpita indica (Saunder) were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The antennal flagellum of male and female has six types of sensilla: long trichodea, short trichodesa, chaetica, coeloconicum around spines, camaniformia and styloconica. There are sexual differences in antennae of P. indica. The female antenna has a coeloconicum sensillum without spines nearby the long trichodea sensilla on ninth flagellomere. Otherwise, auricillica sensilla are distribute on the basal segment of male antenna. These structures are not showed in the female antenna. There are a lot of pores on the hair tufts of the male hair-pencils.
A series of experiments was conducted to determine the toxicities of thiodicarb on the six lepidopterous pests (Pseudaletia separata, Plutella xylostella, Palpita indica, Spodoptera exigua, Helicoverpa assulta, Spodoptera litura) and to elucidate factors insecticidal effects mechanism of thiodicarb. Thiodicarb was very effective against six lepidopterous young larvae, but less effective to the old larvae and it acted slowly. Thiodicarb inhibited acetylcholinesterase and glutathione S-transferase activities, but not inhibit esterase activity.
Development and reproduction of the cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica, were investigatedunder different temperatures (15 .O, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25 .O, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5, and 35 .O$^{\circ}$C). Duration fromegg to pre-adult of the cotton caterpillar were ranged from 68.6 days at 175$^{\circ}$C to 19.7 days at 35.0% (3.5times shorter growth period compared with that at 17S$^{\circ}$C). At 15.0$^{\circ}$C, cotton caterpillar eggs developedto the last larval instar but were not able to go through the pupal stage. The lower developmentalthreshold temperatures and degree-days of egg, larva, pupa, and complete development were 13.4, 10.6,11.6, and 11.5"C and 55.3,251.5, 138.3, and 479.8 degree days, respectively. The hatching, pupation andemergence rates were higher at 25.0eC and 27.5"C compared with other temperatures. The survival ratefrom the hatched larva to adult was the highest at 27.5"C. The preoviposition and the adult longevity were11.5 and 30.6 days at 17.5"C and 1.5 and 9.2 days at 35.0$^{\circ}$C, respectively. The mean fecundity perfemales was greater at 25.0$^{\circ}$C and 27.5"C compared with other temperatures. Mean generation time indays (T) was shorter on higher temperature. Net reproductive rate per generation (R,) was the lowest atthe highest temperature as well as at the lowest, and it was 199.1 which was the highest at 27.5"C. Theintrinsic rate of natural increase (r,) was highest at 30.0$^{\circ}$C as 0.148. As a result, optimum ranges oftemperature for P. indica growth were between 25.0-32.5"C .emperature for P. indica growth were between 25.0-32.5"C .t;C .
The present study was aimed to examine the effect of different host plants on the biological property of cotton caterpillar, outbreak pest of cucurbit vegetables. The feeding and oviposition preferences toward cucumber and pumpkin were greater than those toward watermelon, oriental melon, and melon. The periods of egg and larva fed on oriental melon, melon, and pumpkin were longer than those on watermelon and cucumber. The longest pupal period was 10.5 days from cucumber. The hatching rate, pupation rate, emergence rate, and survival rate were observed from different host plants. The hatching rate was the highest on cucumber (87.2%) and the lowest on melon (72.8%). The pupation rate on watermelon and oriental melon (90.0% and 89.1%, respectively) was higher than that on cucumber (62.0%). The emergence rate on cucumber and pumpkin (93.5% and 92.0%, respectively) was higher than that on oriental melon (78.7%). The survival rate from hatching to emergence on watermelon (76.0%) was the highest, and the lowest on cucumber (50.0%). The adult period on melon (21.0 days) was the longest, and the shortest on cucumber (15.5 days) among 5 host plants. Average number of eggs per female on cucumber (281.8 eggs) was the highest, and the least on oriental melon (96.6 eggs). The survivorship on cucumber was the longest (30 days), and the shortest on pumpkin (17 days). The preoviposition period on oriental melon and melon (3.4 days) was longer than that on watermelon (2.1 days) and mean generation time in day (T) on melon was the longest (47.2 days) though they were not significant. The net reproductive rate per generation (R$_{o}$) on cucumber, 191.3, was the highest and the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (r$_{m}$) was observed from cucumber as 0.127. All these results suggest that the growth ana reproduction of cotton caterpillar varies depending upon the kind of host plants. The analysis of the life table revealed that cucumber and pumpkin were the favorable host plants of cotton caterpillar.
