Properties of wood charcoal made from the domestic wood species at $300-900^{\circ}C$ have investigated to understand the correlation between carbonization temperature and chemical and physical characteristics of wood charcoal. In terms of charcoal yield at particular carbonization temperatures, it was drastically decreased until the temperature reaches up to $600^{\circ}C$ and the decrease ratio of yield was reduced at higher temperatures. As the carbonization temperature increased, pH of the wood charcoal increased so that it became basic at last. The wood charcoal prepared at $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ showed the highest caloric value and those of wood charcoals made at higher temperature became plateau at a little lower level than the peak. The caloric value of Japanese larch charcoal was a bit higher than that of Red oak charcoal. The carbon content in the wood charcoal was increased as the carbonization temperature increased, whereas the hydrogen content was decreased. Specific surface area of the wood charcoal became larger with increase in temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$ but it was decreased or reduced in the increasing ratio after, and then it rose again at higher temperature than $800^{\circ}C$. Absorption capacity of the wood charcoal against iodine and gaseous acetic acid became greater as the carbonization temperature increased. Japanese larch charcoal presented higher absorption capacity than Red oak charcoal. As the above results, it is revealed that carbonization temperature affects the chemical and physical properties of wood charcoal. Therefore, to use wood charcoal with maximum effect it should be prepared at optimum temperature for proper use.
To analyze the changes in pH and elemental content ratio of wood charcoal and in FT-IR spectra of their surfaces, wood charcoals carbonized from Pinus koraiensis were used. pHs of wood charcoals carbonized from Pinus koraiensis at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were 5-27 and 6.80, respectively, whereas they were between 9.25~10.35 for the wood charcoals manufactured between $500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ From the changes in the elemental ratios of Pinus koraiensis wood charcoal by increasing carbonization temperature, carbon (C) contents increased by elevating the carbonization temperature with the decreasing in content ratios of O and H. The largest changes in the ratio was found between the carbonization temperature 400 and $500^{\circ}C$. Ratios of C, O, H of the wood charcoal manufactured at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were 67.7, 28.9, 3.0% and 72.2, 24.9, 2.5%, respectively, while those at $500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ were between 83.3~90.5, 13.6~9.0, 2.7~0.3%. The surface functional groups of Pinus koraiensis wood charcoals were determined by comparison of FT-IR spectra of the wood powder and the wood charcoal carbonized with the wood powder. The functional groups on the surface of wood charcoals carbonized at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were considered to be acidic groups like Lactone, Lactol, Carboxylic acid, Carboxylic anhydride, whereas Pyrone types could be the major functional groups for the wood charcoals carbonized between 500 and $900^{\circ}C$.
It was investigated the possibility to use charcoal powder as beneficial soil conditioner, which used frequently in environmentally friendly agricultural farming system. For this purpose, the effects of charcoal powder on the growth of red pepper and chemical and microbiological properties of soil were also determined. The application of charcoal powder resulted in no significant differences of pH and EC in the soil compared to those of control. However, small particle size of charcoal powder increased yield of red pepper while large charcoal powder resulted in decrease of root growth of red pepper. Furthermore, the application of charcoal powder resulted in changes of soil microflora relating to plant growth stage. The number of the nitrogen fixing bacteria and fungi increased at the early growth stage, while phosphate releasing fungi in the soil increased at the late stage of growth by charcoal powder application. These beneficial effect of charcoal powder on the soil microbial properties was larger by the use of smaller particle size of charcoal powder. Therefore, it indicated that the small size of charcoal powder might be more influential on the red pepper yield and soil microbial properties may be due to large capacity of nutrients uptake for the plant and microorganisms. Additionally the optimal application amount of charcoal powder for the red pepper could be suggested as much as 300kg 10a$^{-1}$ for the both purposes of improvement of crop yield and retardation of the nutrients accumulation by excess charcoal application.
The building materials used for improving indoor air quality, the wood charcoal mixed with cement mortar or natural water paint were examined for their potential removing ability of formaldehyde. After the reaction of samples with formaldehyde in the glass flasks designed in our lab, the remaining formaldehyde was collected using DNPH (2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine) cartridges, and their concentration was determined using HPLC. From the results, it was found that the removing amount of formaldehyde per one gram sample containing 5, 10, or 15% of wood charcoal was more than three times compared to that of control (100% cement mortar or water paint). Their elimination percentages from the initial formaldehyde was about 80~90%. The experimental results for wood charcoal-water paint showed a similar trend with those of wood charcoal-cement mortar samples. Their elimination percentages from the initial formaldehyde was about 90%. It is proposed that formaldehyde is adsorbed on the adsorbed 'O' or 'OH' groups in the graphene layers formed through the re-arrangement of lignocellulose in the wood during the carbonization procedure.
Using a pinus koraiensis and pinus rigida which are normally being discarded in South Korea, the optimal condition of producing charcoals has been studied to develop activated carbons which can be recycled as a higher value-added product. A study on manufacture of activated carbons from a discarded timber consists of two processes, the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process and the production process of activated carbons from the charcoals by chemical activation reaction. This study deals with the production process of charcoals from a discarded timber by low temperature pyrolysis process. As a results of experiment, it was investigated that charcoals produced through drying at $150^{\circ}C$ for 6hr and pyrolysis process at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr had the highest values in physical properties such as iodine number and BET surface area. Furthermore, through observing SEM images, the maximum development of porosity had been founded in this condition. It was confirmed that values of physical properties on using a pinus koraiensis are superior to the ones when using a pinus rigida. When charcoals were produced from a pinus koraiensis in this condition, BET surface area was approx. $640m^2/g$.
The objective of this study was to investigate potential usage of environmentally friendly building materials, liquid mortar and dry cement mortar mixed with charcoal, based on the test of their physical and chemical properties. From the test results of physical and chemical properties of the liquid mortar mixed with charcoal, liquid mortar containing over 20% of charcoal, the consistency viscosity and the non-volatile content met a standard requirement. Drying time was delayed with increase in charcoal contents in the liquid mortar, however they were fully cured within 60 minutes in all treated levels. Other properties were acceptable at standard requirement. From the results, it was found that the proper charcoal addition level to the liquid mortar was 25%. In the results on dry cement, it was found that samples containing 5% of charcoal showed the maximum compressive strength, whereas samples containing over 20% of charcoal did not reach the minimum requirement of KS standard. Water retention ability constantly increased as the charcoal ratio increased. The conventional dry cement mortar adsorbed 59.5% of it, in the test of adsorption rate on ammonia gas, whereas cement mortar containing 10% of charcoal showed 71.6% of ammonia gas adsorption.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of charcoal meal application on the quality of the wood. As the results, it was observed that annual ring width of seedlings was wider in the plots treated with charcoal meal than the control plots. Depending on the kind of charcoal, annual ring width was widest in the plot treated with Larix kaempferi charcoal, and then was observed in order of Pinus koraiensis > particle board > Quercus acutissima. Latewood percentage and specific gravity were lower in the plots treated with charcoal than the control plots and lowest in Larix kaempferi charcoal plot among the plots treated with charcoal. Tracheid length was longer in the plot treated with powder charcoal than the control plot but tracheid width was not significantly different from the control plot. The cell wall thickness of earlywood was not significantly different between the plot treated with charcoal and the control plot but that of latewood was thicker in the plots treated with charcoal than the control. Microfibril angle was smaller in the plot treated with granulated charcoal than the control plot. However, there was no significant difference between the plot treated with powder charcoal and granulated charcoal.
To evaluate the effect of carbonization temperature of charcoal on the heavy metal adsorption property, Quercus mongolica wood and Larix kaempferi bark powder (100~60 mesh) were carbonized at between 400 and $900^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. In the properties of carbonized materials which affect the adsorption ability, pH increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, so that the pHs of wood and bark charcoal carbonized at $900^{\circ}C$ were 10.8 and 10.4, respectively. Also, in both materials, the carbon content ratio became larger as the carbonization temperature was raised. At the same carbonization temperature, carbon content ratio of the bark charcoal tended to be greater than that of the wood charcoal. In case of iodine adsorption which indicates the adsorption property in liquid phase, the wood charcoal showed higher adsorption value than the bark charcoal. From the investigation of adsorptive elimination properties of the charcoals against 15 ppm Cd, Zn, and Cu, the higher the carbonization temperature, the greater elimination ratio was. In comparison, the wood charcoal presented higher elimination ratio than that of the bark charcoal. In the wood charcoals carbonized at higher than $500^{\circ}C$, especially, 0.2 g of the charcoal was enough to eliminated almost 100% of the heavy metal ions. Heavy metal ion elimination ratio of the charcoals depended on the kinds of adsorbates. The effectiveness of adsorbates in adsorptive elimination by the charcoals were in order of Cu > Cd > Zn. This is because the physicochemical interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent affects their adsorption properties, it is considered that subsequent researches are needed to improve the effectiveness of heavy metal adsorption by the charcoals.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of soil improvement according to the shape of charcoal and the kind of carbonized tree species. As the results, all of the seedlings of Thuja occidentalis and Aesculus turbinata grew better in the charcoal-treated soil than the non-treated soil. In case of powder charcoal, Thuja occidentalis seedlings grew up best in the soil treated with powder charcoal of Pinus koraiensis and then grew well in order of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Quercus acutissima. In case of granulated charcoal, the seedlings grew well in order of the granulated charcoal of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Pinus koraiensis. It was analyzed that the soil porosity and the organic matter content were mo re in the charcoal -treated soil than the non-treated soil also. It is inferred that because the aeration property and the absorption of organic matter were increased in the root zone, the growth of seedlings was better in the char-coal-treated soil.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of woody chared materials on the injuries and growth of plant, and chemical properties of soil in the continuous cropping field of red pepper. The field for the experiment was selected among districts, where have been taking place seriously injuries by continuous cropping of red pepper for above 20 years. The growth of red pepper was promoted and the growing period was prolonged about 2 weeks longer than that of control, and yield was increased with the increment of charcoal application amount. The occurrance rate of phytopthora blight disease was 9% lower at charcoal 500 kg/l0a application treatment than at control in the experiment of application amount of the first year, but was not significantly different between sizes of charcoal. The mix of charcoal and pyroligeous liquor had no effect on the growth of red pepper. In applicated soil of charcoal, pH was increased, EC was decreased, and Ca and Mg content was low somewhat. In all, charcoal granule was most effective type. The B/F value of soil was higher at the charcoal powder treatment on July 18 than other treatment, but was no difference between treatments in anytime else.
