  • Many of the historic plant specimens collected from the Korean Peninsula in the early 20th century deposited in herbaria in Korea were destroyed during the Korean War. However, duplicates of the specimens deposited in the Herbarium of the University of Tokyo (TI) remained unharmed. We examined historic plant specimens, identified undetermined specimens, and made a list to provide fundamental information on the early taxonomic history of Korea. One set of duplicate specimens was donated by TI and deposited into the Chonnam National University herbarium (CNU) and into the herbarium of the National Institute of Biological Resources in Korea (KB).

  • It is expected that identification and lists of $C_4$ plants in specific regions are useful not only for the ecological researches that are related to vegetation phenology and succession but also as an index of climate change. In this review, $C_4$ plants growing in South Korea were listed and their life forms were investigated. In addition, we discussed the influences that climatic change and the $C_4$ plants exerted on plant ecosystem. Photosynthetic pathway types ($C_3$ and $C_4$) for the plant species in South Korea were determined by reviewing the scientific literatures published between 1971 and 2010. Of the total 4476 species in 1123 genera and 197 families, 206 species (4.6%) in 84 genera (7.5%) and 21 families (10.7%) were identified as $C_4$ plants (including $C_3$-$C_4$ intermediate plants). Among the identified $C_4$ species, 53 species (25.7%) in 26 genera and 15 families were classified as Dicotyledoneae, while 153 species (74.3%) in 58 genera and 6 families were classified as Monocotyledoneae. The majority of the $C_4$ species belong to four families: Chenopodiaceae (15 species), Amaranthaceae (13 species), Gramineae (102 speceis) and Cyperaceae (45 species). With respect to life form composition of 206 $C_4$ species, Th-$R_5$-$D_4$-t was most dominant: 95 species (46.1%) were included in Th, 123 species (59.7%) in $R_5$, 179 species (86.9%) in $D_4$, and 122 species (59.2%) in t. The projected increase in temperature due to climate change may provide better conditions for the growth of $C_4$ plants. Such a result will have considerable impacts on the interspecific competition between $C_3$ and $C_4$ plants, the distribution of $C_4$ plants, plant phenology, and plant diversity.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a mentoring program to assist freshmen who are part of the early childhood education in three year college in order to help them adjust to the major. Focus group interviews were conducted to find the difficulties that freshmen have experienced in adapting to their major. Afterward, the data was collected through brainstorming and questionnaires to find the solutions to their problems. The results showed that the troubles freshmen experienced were grouped into intrapersonal, interpersonal, and support system problems. In order to help these freshmen, it is needed to reduce their difficulties and to offer an informational guide which consist of the contents to adapt them to their college life. The mentoring program for freshmen of the early childhood education In three year college have consisted of the guides helping the troubles of adaptation to their major and the information needed to freshmen. The program has 8 sessions and it's contents were categorized into a time management, an academic activity, a social relationship development, a career and employment preparation and an extracurricular activity.

  • Recently, with the development of mobile devices and social media services, contents recommendation schemes have been studied. They are typically applied to the job curation systems. Most existing university education content recommendation schemes only recommend the most frequently taken subjects based on the student's school and major. Therefore, they do not consider the type or field of employment that each student wants. In this paper, we propose a university educational contents recommendation scheme for job curation services. The proposed scheme extracts companies that a user is interested in by analyzing his/her activities in the job curation system. The proposed scheme selects graduates or mentors based on the reliability and similarity of graduates who have been employed at the companies of interest. The proposed scheme recommends customized subjects, comparative subjects, and autonomous activity lists to users through collaborative filtering.

  • This study aims at reviewing the research trends of records and archives management history published during the past 12 years, analyzing issues, and suggesting future tasks in related research areas. It starts with categorizing research areas of records and archives management history in archival sciences. All 31 articles have been selected from the 2 journals on archival science and 6 journals on related research areas. In quantitative measurement, the paper draws up 31 kinds of article bibliographies and looks at the current status of subject areas by year and author. In content analysis, selected articles are categorized into 3 subject areas, that is, general history, domestic history, and foreign history. For each subject area, research trends of the historical and regional studies are analyzed. This study concludes with emphasis on a new research direction between practice and points out that academic theory should be required for the future development in records and archives management history.

  • Upon checking 'Illustrated Flora of Korea' which was published in 1980, there were more than ca. 150 apparently invalid names for the Korean plants, which were nomen nudum as well as new combinations or avowed substitutes by T. B. Lee. These names were based on previously and invalidly published names from 'Handbook of Korean Forestry Sciences' and 'An Enumeration of Plants Hitherto Known from Corea'. We consider it useful to summarize the results of this investigation and these invalid names of Korean plants were enlisted here. These invalid names should not be used any more even as synonyms in the literatures.

  • The purpose of this paper Is to describe the matters to plan the best information systems in Korean old books. It analyzes: i) a range of definition of old books, ii) its characteristics and current state of processing the old documents, iii) the scope of automation and building up the library institution, iv) the construction of Korean old books Information systems, v) its case study, and vi) the evaluation and vision of system. The old document information system have been organized on the basis of library networks systems with the National Central Library as leader, its implemented system has the subsystem such as cataloging system, annotation system, full-text or image-based system, and retrieval system. In case study, it is suggested two examples which has been built in the National Central Library and Sung Kyun Kwan university. finally, it provides the evaluation criteria and vision for the library which designs the old document information systems.

  • Speech database is an indispensable part of speech research. Speech database is necessary to use in speech research and development processes, and to evaluate performances of various speech-processing systems. To use speech database for common purpose, it is necessary to design utterance list that has all the possible phonetical events in minimal number of words, and is independent of tasks. To meet those restrictions this paper extracts PBW set from large text corpus. Speech database that was constructed using PBW set for utterance list and its properties are described in this paper.

  • Hylodesmum laxum (Candolle) H. Ohashi & R. R. Mill subsp. laxum was recorded from Korea. The species is widely distributed in S. E. Asia, but in Korea the plant was the first found in the evergreen forest of Seogwipo-si in Jeju-do. Hylodesmum H. Ohashi & R. R. Mill was raised as a separate genus recently based on Desmodium sect. Podocarpium Benth. Except for two species, all Korean species included in the former Desmodium are classified into the genus Hylodesmum. A key to and enumeration of the Korean species of Hylodesmum are provided.

  • A diverse range of taxonomic confusions are brought forth since past taxonomic information including major errors following its initial provision of some uncertain information has repeatedly been applied to Korean Vespidae in its identification. Thus, this study, which made a final summarization of research on Vespidae, provided the list of Korean Vespidae determined except for Eumeninae, with their distributional data. A total of 30 species (including 3 subspecies) belonging to 5 genera of 2 subfamilies are listed: subfamily Vespinae (3 genera/ 18 species) and subfamily Polistinae (2 genera/ 12 species).
