  • The problematic issue of cracking, water shedding in tunnel is recently coming out in the view of the structural stability. Hence, the assessment is required for the existing tunnels to achieve the structural soundness of tunnels, and their safety and maintenance. In this study, fracture behaviour and displacement of a tunnel concrete lining using steel fiber reinforcement concrete was investigated. The specimens were fabricated in single lining for a model of real road tunnel. As parameters, load condition, thickness of lining, whether or not rear cavity in crown, and a ratio of steel fiber in concrete were taken. From these factors, the load for crack and fracture, displacement, and the pattern of crack were looked into for the structural stability of a tunnel concrete lining.

  • It is very important to study on the structural behaviors of structurally damaged tunnel linings. A series of centrifuge model tests were performed in order to investigate different behaviors of tunnel linings. A 1/100-scaled aluminum horseshoe tunnel linings with a radius 5 cm, height 8 cm were buried in a depth with dry Joomunjin standard sand, the relative density of which was 86%. Such sectional forces as bending moments and thrusts along the tunnel circumference were measured by twelve strain gages. Earth pressures in soil mass and on the outside of lining model were estimated by pressure transducers, ground surface settlements at a center and edges by using LVDTs.

  • A new system identification method based on tunnel deformation data is proposed to find the damage in the lining structure. For this, an inverse problem in which the deformation data and dead load of concrete lining are known a priori is introduced to estimate the degree and location of the damages. Models based on uniform reduction of stiffness and homogenized crack concept are individually employed to compare the applicability and relative advantages of the models. Numerical analyses are peformed for the idealized tunnel structure and the effect of white noise, common in most measurement data, is also included to better understand the suitability of the proposed models. As a result, model 1 based on uniform stiffness reduction method is shown to be relatively insensitive to the noise, while model 2 with the homogenized crack concept is proven to be easily applied to the field situation since the effect of stiffness reduction is rather small.

  • The various alternatives to reduce the construction period and cost in the wide and long tunnel have been attempted recently. However, the concrete lining forming process after finishing tunnel excavation may delay construction period considering the specific conditions of the wide and long tunnel. The concrete lining is indispensible for the road tunnel. For this reason, the blasting-lining synchronizing study had been carried out to reduce construction period in the Gyea-Ryong Tunnel. Lining models were installed at four different distance conditions the floor of the tunnel. After model installation, hundreds of blasting vibration measurements and concrete material tests were performed to calculate the safe distance between blasting point and concrete lining form. The study also introduces a method which can obtain the better ability of construction by improving working environment with the ventilation and the relocation of tunnel equipments in the working places.

  • A finite element method is used for the force analysis of semicircular arch shaped corrugated steel plate lining. The assessment of stability and behavior for several conditions are executed from the analysis of soil-structure interaction in accordance with CHBDC (Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, 2000). One fortieth scaled model tests were conducted on the semicircular arch lining to verify the FEM analysis results under the earth-load conditions.

  • This paper concerns the effect of lining interface adherence on the lining's load carrying capacity. A series of reduced scale laboratory tests and finite element anlayses were carried out with the aim of gaining insight into the effect of shotcrete lining adherence on the load carrying capacity of double shell lining. The results indicated among other things that the load carrying capacity of a double shell tunnel is significantly affected by the adherence between layers. Also revealed was that for cases with low lining layer adherence stress concentration may occur due to relative movement between the lining layers with this trend being more pronounced with increasing tunnel cover depth. Practical implications from the results of this study are discussed in great detail.

  • There is a possibility of cavities occurring inside and behind the lining of an aged tunnel structure. In most cases, it is not easy to check the cavity because it exists in a place where visual inspection is impossible. Recently, attempts have been made to evaluate the condition of the tunnel lining and the backfill materials using non-destructive tests such as Ground Penetrating Radar, and various related model tests and numerical analysis studies have been conducted. In this study, the GPR signal characteristics for tunnel lining model testing were analyzed using gprMax software, which was compared with model test results. The numerical model applied to the model test reasonably simulated the electromagnetic wave signal according to the change of the material such as tunnel lining and internal cavity. Using the verified GPR model, B-scan data for the development of the GPR signal analysis technique were obtained, which can evaluate the thickness of the tunnel lining, the presence of the cavity, the effect of the waterproof membrane, and the frequency band.

  • The behavior of the masonry lining is studied to gain basic information on how to reinforce the masonry tunnels. Apart from the previous works on the masonry structures, the multi-course masonry structure, realistic in field condition, is considered and the constitutive relationship of the masonry is, therefore, established. The design charts of the orthotropic material properties are proposed according to the stiffness ratio and the crack initiation and subsequent propagation model is also considered to model the brittle nature of the masonry. A numerical analysis on the masonry panel is investigated to verify the proposed model and future works of the masonry lining are briefly explained.

  • Dynamic behaviors of a corrugated steel plate tunnel lining system are examined under wind loads due to passing vehicles. Applied wind loads are simulated by applying the time functions as a vehicle moves through the tunnel. Wind loads are described by the pressure and suction as a vehicle arrives and leaves target positions in the tunnel. The tunnel lining is modeled using the simplified shell elements that retain the characteristics of the corrugated shapes. The displacements of the tunnel lining are evaluated under various conditions regarding wind velocity and the passing vehicles. The responses are found to increase as the vehicle velocity and wind velocity increase. A maximum displacement of 25mm occurs when two vehicles are crossing at the speed of 120km/h. A row of vehicles running consecutively minimally affects the dynamic responses with less than 2.5% of the dynamic responses enlarged and attributed to one running vehicle. It should be noted that the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining should be considered when there is no shotcrete applied.

  • In this study, a similarity rule is thoroughly discussed for tunnelling model tests which can simulate actual ground conditions. Based on this prior consideration, theoretical works are performed to simulate a real ground condition into a gravitational field with a similarity. A process is arranged to determine a lining condition in laboratory tests for a sandy ground tunnel.
