The hydrodynamics in the Youngsan River Estuary has changed due to coastal developments such as the estuary dam and two tidal barriers. As the freshwater discharge is artificially controlled, the circulation pattern is different from those of natural estuaries and the river-born sediment supply is restricted. 3D numerical modeling system EFDC was applied to investigate the sediment transport pattern and budget in summer with river floods. The real-time driving forces and the fluvial sediment discharges from the watershed modeling were assigned for the simulation period. The size classes of sand, silt and clay were adopted based on the grain-size distribution of bottom sediments. The modeling results were calibrated and validated with the observed tides, tidal currents and suspended sediment concentrations. The suspended sediments are transported to the offshore at surface layer, whereas upstream toward the dam at mid- and bottom layers in August 2011. The characteristic estuarine circulation induced by the freshwater discharge from the dam, causes the deposition of silt-sized sediments on the whole and the sustained suspension of clay-sized sediments.

This study was conducted on the sediment remediation using micro-bubble to remove fine particles. For this study, characteristics of contamination and release in sediment were analyzed. And then, the characteristics of bubbles on removal efficiency was investigated at various operation conditions. In particle size distribution of the sediment used for the study, the proportion of clay and silt (<0.075 mm) was about 7.7%, sand (0.075~4.75 mm) was about 67.8%, and gravel (${\geq}4.75$) was 24.5%. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of the sediment were 2,790~3,260, 261~311 mg/kg respectively. Ignition loss and water content were 4.1~9.6, 32.9~53.2% respectively. In analysis of removal efficiency according to operation conditions of micro-bubble, it was the highest when operation condition is pressure 6 atm, pressurized water ratio 30%, and coagulant dosage 15 ppm. At the time, the sediment's removal efficiency was 19.9%. Accordingly removal efficiency of TN and TP were 21.4, 22.6% respectively. Finally a research was found that fine particles in sediment were almost removed by micro-bubble, which led to decrease nutrients' release at about 20.1~64.3% in comparison to sediment including lots of fine particles.
This study was conducted for evaluation the geological, physical, and chemical properties of domestic sand by analyzing about 4,800 quality data of natural sand from river and land area surveyed until 2023 through the aggregate resource survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The average depth of the Quaternary unconsolidated sedimentary layer in Korea, which includes a sand layer, is about 10m (maximum depth 66m). The thickness of the sand layer within the sedimentary layer is most dominant in the range of 0.5m to 4.0m. This accounts for about 70% of the entire sand layer. In the sand layer, the ratio of sand, gravel, and clay is 60:20:10. Regardless of the provenance or geology, the sand is mainly composed of quartz, plagioclase, and K-feldspar, and the minor minerals are muscovite, biotite, chlorite, magnetite, epidote. The sand includes in 45~75% of quartz, 5~20% of plagioclase and K-feldspar, each other. And other minor minerals are included in 10%. The average grain size of sand is 0.5mm to 1.0mm, which accounts for 44% of sand samples. The water absorption rate and soundness are estimated to be suitable for aggregate quality standard in almost all sand, and the absolute dry density is suitable for 66%.

The study deals with the geochemical analyses on the stratigraphy and sedimentation of the paleofluvial outcrop under Jeongok basalt layer in Chugaryeong Rift Valley. The results of field survey and analysis show that the paleofluvial sand and gravel layers had been constructed before the arrival of basaltic lava in Jeongok area of Hantan River valley in central Korea. XRF, for the main elements analysis, results present that JG2-3, a test sample from basalt weathering layer, has different characteristics from 5 other samples in the aspects of chemical weathering levels. ICP-MS, for analysis of the rare earth elements analysis, estimates that gravel layer, in the lowest part of the outcrop, had been originated from pre-lava bedrocks near the upper reach of the Hantan River, so the layer is almost not related to basalt layers. Finally, the OSL dating results in paleofluvial sedimentation had been in process until nearly 40,000 BP, before formation of lava plateau in the Jeongok area.
To investigate the changes in depositional environment around Gangneung Harbor, we analyzed the surface sediment textural parameters and topography data collected five times from February 2007 to February 2009. In the study area, sediments were mainly composed of sand and its sediment size became finer at offshore sites. During summer time, however, the sand grains became coarser than winter season near Namhangjin Beach, inside the harbor, and offshore areas. On the other hand, the grain size of Anmok Beach showed a gradual finer trend with time. Compared with the previous studies conducted before the completion of Gangneung Harbor construction, the mean grain size became finer on Anmok Beach, while it was coarser on Namhangjin Beach. The bathymetric changes observed over a 2-year period showed predominant erosion in the area of 5 to 10 m water depths and deposition in 2 to 5 m water depths. The shallower area less than 2 m water depths showed an alternating trend and yet slightly more dominant erosion process. The sediment textural parameters and the distribution of erosion and deposition have changed continuously. Results imply that such changes show long-term trends as well as seasonal variations in which the trend may have been formed after the completion of Gangneung Harbor construction.

This study deals with geomorphological process of the sand dune landform including the distribution and surface environments, characteristics of sediments, origins and moving processes in lower reach and mouth delta of Duman River, Northeast Korea and China. The methodology of the study includes image analysis of Landsat TM(1992.10) and ETM(2000.9) and Spot(2005.4) for analysis of land cover, 2 times field survey for recognition of landform and acquisition of sediments raw data materials, and grain analysis and exoscopy about raw data materials. The geomorphic elements from satellite image analysis are composed of the delta, sand spit, active and stable dune, sand bar and riparian vegetated zone. Results of the grain analysis indicate the sediments originated from marine coastal zone than riverine one. This means that present sand dune not so much reflect present climatic and geomorphic environments. Result of the exoscopy analysis show that ratio of quartz, which is comparatively resistant to environment, is highest as $65{\sim}83%$ out of sediments. But the surface of the $30{\sim}40%$ of mineral grains was coated by yellow-colored stained materials, due to chemical weathering. Some grains show rough skin, looking as acicular, network structure and etching pits, affected by physical and chemical weathering.
The Korean terms of sediment grain size demonstrated in the 30 textbooks of elementary, middle, and high schools and university levels are compared and reviewed, and the problems of its use and alternative terms are proposed. The Korean terms of sediment grain size shown in the most textbooks are the translated terms of the Udden-Wentworth grade scale, and the different terms have been used in these textbooks. In the case of gravels, granule, cobble, and boulder have commonly been translated as wangmorae (king sand), janjagal (fine gravel), wangjagal (king gravel), and pyoryeog (drift gravel) or georyeog (large gravel), respectively. However, it is regarded to be reasonable that they are termed as janjagal, jungjagal (medium gravel), keunjagal (large gravel), and wangjagal, respectively. Adjectives such as 'maeu goun' (very fine), 'goun' (fine), 'junggan' (medium), 'gulgeun' (coarse), and 'maeu gulgeun' (very coarse), attached with each sediment name seem to be suitable to terms for sediments smaller than gravels. Silt has been commonly termed as misa (fine sand) in many textbooks, but it may be appropriate that silt is expressed as silt. Finally, mud, which is a mixture of silt and clay, should be named ito (mud) as shown in several textbooks including Dictionary of Korean Earth Science, though mud has been frequently termed as jinheug (slush or watery soil) in the most of textbooks for elementary and middle school students, and some high school and university textbooks.

A 'continuous removal of organic matters (CROM) system' using a native freshwater bivalve in Korea Anodonta woordiana, was developed to determine its potential of controlling various sestons in eutrophic lake system, and to evaluate its effect on water quality improvement under consideration of sediment addition as habitat. We designed CROM experiments with four treatments: no mussels and no sediment (W, negative control), no mussels and sediment (WS, positive control), mussels and no sediment (WM), and mussels and sediment (WMS). The experiments were performed at the condition of 18${\sim}$25 L $h^{-1}$ of inflow, mussel density of 486.1 indiv. $m^{-2}$, and temperatures between 15 and $22^{\circ}C$ for 13 consecutive days. Physicochemical and biological parameters were measured at daily (10:00 am) intervals after the mussel addition. Results indicated that mussel stockings without addition of sediment effectively removed sestons (suspended solids and chlorophyll-a) at nearly same level over 80 percentage of the control during the study, while there were no differences in removal activities of sestons between with and without sediment (P>0.5). Therefore, it clearly suggests that CROM system using A. woordiana has a strong potential to control the seston in surface water of eutrophic lake.

Contaminants such as organic matters, nutrients and toxic chemicals in rivers and lakes with a weak flow rate are first removed from the water and accumulated in the sediments. Subsequently, they are released into the water column again, posing direct/indirect adverse effects on the water quality and aquatic ecosystems. In particular, phosphorus is known to accelerate the eutrophication phenomenon when it is released into the water column via physical disturbance and biological/chemical actions as one of important materials that determine the primary production of aquatic ecosystems and an element that is stored mainly in the sediments in the process of material circulation in the body of water. In this study, the effect on reducing phosphorus release in sediments was analyzed by applying different capping materials to lake water, where the effect of aquatic microorganisms is taken into account, and to distilled water, where the effect of microorganisms is excluded. The experimental results showed that capping with chemical materials such as Fe-gypsum and $SiO_2$-gypsum further reduced the phosphorus release by at least 40% compared to the control case. Composite materials like granule gypsum+Sand showed over 50% phosphorus release reduction effect. Therefore, it is determined that capping with chemical materials such as granule-gypsum and eco-friendly materials such as sand is effective in reducing phosphorus release. The changes in phosphorus properties in the sediments before and after capping treatment showed that gypsum input helped to change the phosphorus that is present in lake sediments into apatite-P, a stable form that makes phosphorus release difficult. Based on the above results, it is expected that the application of capping technology will contribute to improving the efficiency of reducing phosphorus release that occurs in river and lake sediments.

In order to propose optimum in-situ treatment for reducing phosphorous release from sediment of stationary lakes, a series of column tests were performed. The sediment used in experiment was very fine clay with a mean grain site $7.7{\phi}$ and high $C_{org}$ contents(2.4%). Phosphorous releases were evaluated in two ways : in lake water(with microbial effect) and in distilled water(without microbial effect). As in-situ capping material, sand and loess were used while Fe-Gypsum and $SiO_2$-Gypsum were used for in-situ chemical treatment. In case of lake water considering the effect of microorganism, phosphorous concentration rapidly decreased in the early stage of experiment but it was gradually increased after 10 days. Flux of phosphorous release for control was $3.0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$. Whereas, those for sand layer capping(5 cm) and loess layer capping(5 cm) were $2.5mg/m^2{\cdot}d\;and\;1.8mg/m^2{\cdot}d$, respectively because the latter two were not consolidated sufficiently. For Fe-gypsum and $SiO_2$-gypsum the fluxes were $1.4mg/m^2{\cdot}d$ which meant that reduction efficiency of phosphorous release was more than 40% higher than that of control. The case capping with complex layer was $1.0mg/m^2{\cdot}d$, which showed high reduction efficiency over 60%. The addition of gypsum($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) into the sediment reduced release of Phosphorus from the sediments. Gypsum acted as a slow-releasing source of sulphate in sediment, which enhanced the activity of SRB(sulfate reducing bacteria) and improved the overall mineralization rate of organic matter.
