Effects of Resin Compositions and Additives on Gelation Properties and Bonding Characteristics of Urea-Melamine-Formaldehyde resin adhesives (요소·멜라민 수지 접착제의 겔화성 및 접착특성에 미치는 수지조성과 첨가물의 영향)

  • To accelerate the curing and to improve the bonding properties of urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resin adhesives for plywood, the effects of resin compositions and additives on gelation time and bonding strength were discussed. The gelation time of UMF resin prepared by simultaneous reaction with urea(U), melamine(M) and formaldehyde(F) at M/U molar ratio 0.2 was shortened as the molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea was increased. However, at F/U molar ratios higher than 2.5, the amounts of free fomaldehyde of resin could not satisfy with KS standard, Therefore, it was difficult to increase the amount of formaldehyde in resin composition for the purpose of fast gelation time. With increasing the molar ratio of melamine to urea(M/U) from 0.3 to 0.6 at constant F/U molar ratio 3.4, the gelation time of UMF resin was slightly decreased, while gradually increased at M/U molar ratio higher than 0.6. The gelation properties of UMF resin and bonding strength of UMF-bonded plywood could be enhanced by using ammonium chloride and p-toluene sulfonic acid as a curing-agent together with wheat flour and corngluten powder as a extender.

Measurement of Formaldehyde Emissions during Hot-Pressing of Particleboard Bonded with Melamine-Urea-Formaldihyde Resin (요소-멜라민수지로 접착된 파티클보드의 열압동안 포름알데히드 배출량 측정)

  • A melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin, based on 5 percent melamine addition of the resin solids weight, was synthesized in the laboratory for particleboard (PB) manufacture. Laboratory PBs were made with the MUF resin at three press times (3, 4, 5 min) and two resin application rates (6, 8 percent). Enclosed caul system was used for collecting the exhaust gases materials generated during the hot-pressing of PBs. Exhaust gases materials generated inside the enclosed caul during the hot-pressing of PBs were collected in a controlled air stream. Formaldehyde from the exhaust gases collected was determined per a chromotropic method of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Method 3500. The measurement results showed that formaldehyde emissions during the hot-pressing of PB significantly increased with increasing press time, and MUF resin application rates. PB' performance test results showed that internal bond (IB) of PB made with 3-minute press time exceeded the minimum requirement for KS F 3104 PB type 8.0.

Studies on Adhesion of Fancy Veneer and Formaldehyde Emission of Wood-Based Floorings by Mole Ratios of Urea and Melamine (요소·멜라민 접착제의 수지 조성에 따른 마루판의 천연무늬단판 접착성 및 포름알데히드 방출에 대한 연구)

  • This study was to investigate the adhesion properties of fancy veneer and base panels and formaldehyde emission of wood-based floorings bonded with urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives. We focused on stoichiometric mole ratio of reactive functional groups. The urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives were made at twelve different formaldehyde/urea-melamine mole ratios. The interlaminated shear strength and formaldehyde emission of wood-based floorings bonded with selected adhesive among these adhesives were examined. The results showed that the bonding properties were high and the formaldehyde emission was low as the adhesive consisted of stoichiometric mole ratio of formaldehyde/urea-melamine. Interlaminated shear strengths of HDF(High Density Fiberboard) flooring were over 14 kgf/cm2 at all mole ratios. At the mole ratio of 1.0, HDF flooring showed low value of formaldehyde emission of 953 mg/L. Interlaminated shear strengths of Plywood flooring were high, 14.02 kgf/cm2 at mole ratio of 1.4. At the mole ratio of 1.0, Plywood flooring showed low value of formaldehyde emission of 0.26 mg/L.

  • Concrete is a material generally used to build structures and it is exposed to various environment conditions. In particular, a medium such as water lets noxious factors flow into concrete, causing a lot of damage. Therefore, different kinds of materials are being developed to increase the durability of concrete. Among such materials, silane and siloxane compound are known to have a high utilization as an absorption inhibitor. However, if aged or deteriorated reinforced concrete is treated with those compounds, they easily come off the concrete and lose their function since the basic material is weak. This study conducted an experiment to provide concrete with both an absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening by using melamine-formaldehyde resins that are surface-treated with siloxane compound. In addition, a study on the porosity and surface hardness characteristics of a concrete was conducted to check the absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening.

  • This study was carried out to improve the properties of powdered tannin adhesive(PT) by adding liquid tannin resin(LT) to PT in the manufacture of particleboard. Mixing the LT to PT from 50% to 100% by weight did not show any difference in particleboard properties, but the higher the powdered tannin resin ratio, the lower the properties of the board. The proper ratio of PT to LT was 30:70 for the improvement of PT-particleboard, unless LT lower than 70%. Internal bonding strength was in proportional to the amount of LT. Mixing amino adhesives and PT did not show any improvements in mechanical and physical properties of the board but they only acted as scavenger for the free formaldehyde.Manufacturing particle board with the adhesive of 30:70 (PT:LT) and by using double blender resulted in high-performance products of E0 level of formaldehyde emission with high water resistance (U type; below 12%, M type; below 25%), as well as saving chip drying energy.

  • Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is widely used as an indoor building materials. However, formaldehyde resins, commonly used to bind MDF together, emit formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds that cause health risk at sufficient concentration. In this study, condensed tannin having formaldehyde absorption ability was used to solve the problem of formaldehyde emission generated from surface material. The synthesis of melamine-formaldehyde resin and reaction of melamine-formaldehyde and condensed tannin were analyzed by FT-IR spectrum. Also surface properties, such as shear force, impact strength, tape adhesion, pencil hardness and gloss retention were measured. Free formaldehyde analysis was performed to analyze remaining unreacted formaldehyde. According to the results, the optimum shear force and impact strength could be obtained by 10 wt.% usage of condensed tannin. In cases of pencil hardness and gloss retention, the optimum properties could be obtained at 20 wt.% of condensed tannin. The amounts of formaldehyde emission of surface material containing 20 wt.% of condensed tannin was 59 ${\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$. The amounts of formaldehyde emission could be reduced 3 times by using 20 wt.% of condensed tannin.

  • The various size and morphology microcapsules were prepared to produce smell sweet by heating condensation reaction of melamine and formaldehyde using 5-types of surfactants such as the laurylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt (SDS), polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Span-80 and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-1 propanesulfonic acid (AMP). As result it was found that the size and morphology of microcapsule is intimately associated with a kind of surfactants. In order to prepare microcapsule with antibacterial, the silver nanoparticle was prepared by gamma-irradiation. microcapsule with silver nanoparticle was prepared.

  • This study was to measure formaldehyde emission and bonding strength of plywoods manufactured with urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives, which were made from three different mixing ratios of urea and melamine, and with four different formaldehyde/urea-melamine molar ratios of 1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.4. The results were as follows 1. Amount of formaldehyde emission was the lowest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.0. Amounts of formaldehyde emission of experimental manufactured adhesives were lower than that of commercial adhesive. 2. Bonding strength of dry specimen was the highest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Dry bonding strength of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was similar to commercial adhesive. 3. Bonding strength of wet specimen was the highest at the second method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Bonding strength of wet specimen used by the third method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was almost equal to commercial adhesive.

The Effects of PCM Capsule Sizes on the Properties of Acrylic Coatings (PCM 캡슐의 크기가 아크릴 코팅의 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • The capsules were prepared from a phase change material (PCM) of octadecane as a core material and melamine formaldehyde resin as a shell material. The PCM capsule size was varied in the range of $3{\sim}25{\mu}m$. The core contents and sizes of the PCM capsule, were determined by DSC and SEM, respectively. An acrylic coating material which contains butyl acrylate (BA), methyl metacrylate (MMA) and acrylic acid (AA) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The films were prepared from the acrylic emulsion and PCM capsules which have various capsule sizes. From the results of SEM experiment, it was observed that the PCM capsules were well dispersed inside the film and the surface of the film became less rough when the PCM capsule size was small. The swelling ratio of the films were not significantly affected by the PCM capsule size. However, the tensile strength and elongation of the films were greatly decreased with increasing the PCM capsule size.
