  • A series of acrylic copolymers containing perfluoroalkyl acrylate were synthesized by 2-step emulsion polymerization of variety of acrylate monomers (ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate) with perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate (PFA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) monomers. This study focused on effects of monomer compositions (the kind of acrylate monomer, contents of PFA and GMA) and composition of surfactants [(sodium dodecyl sulphate/nonylphenol 10mole ethoxylate (NP-10)] and initiator content on the contact angles and surface free energy. It was found that the copolymer having an optimum composition (BA : 87 wt%, GMA : 8.7 wt% and PFA : 4.3 wt%) was shown to be quite surface active [surface free energy : 19.89 mN/m and contact angles : $103.5^{\circ}$ (water) and $78.7^{\circ}$ (methylene iodide)] in the solid state. This result suggests that the optimal copolymer containing fluorinated monomer synthesized in this study have high potential as a low surface energy material, which may have high oil- and water-repellent surface and have been proposed as acrylic syntan for leather and also as soil-resistant/oil and water repellent coating for textiles and wood etc.

  • Two commercial processing methods have been used to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) marbles; cell molding method and belt molding method. Cell molding method has low productivity and belt molding method has high equipment cost as well as high production cost. A new production method far PMMA marbles using plastic films as molds was studied in this investigation to overcome the shortcomings of cell molding and belt molding method. As plastic film molds for producing PMMA marbles, poly(vinyl acetate) film was used. A methyl methacrylate compound, which has good processability in film molding and shows good mechanical properties after curing, was prepared and used to produce PMMA marbles by film molding method. Properties of the PMMA marbles produced by film molding method were similar to, or higher than, those of commercial PMMA marbles produced by cell molding and belt molding method respectively. The film molding method is considered to have high possibility in commercial application.

  • Thermally conductive materials are widely used in various applications where effective heat dissipation is required. Graphene shows high potential for various uses owing to high electrical conductivity, good mechanical strength, and high thermal conductivity. Generally previous works used organic solvents are generally used for the dispersion of graphene in fabrication procedure. In order to achieve clean fabrication it is required to use water media. In this study, we fabricated graphene attached poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microsphere via microfluidic method. With the aid of surfactant, graphene was well dispersed in water which was used as continuous flow. Thermal conductivity was improved with the small amount of graphene addition and this indicate potential use of this system for thermally conductive composite material.

  • Methylene diisocyanate (MDI) was investigated as a novel interfacial modifier to enhance the performances of poly(methyl methacrylate)-modified starch/styrene-butadiene rubber (PMMA-modified starch/SBR) composites. Owing to the formation urethane linkage on one side and ${\pi}-{\pi}$ adhesion on the other side, MDI acted as an intermediated linkage role in the PMMA-modified starch/SBR interfaces, which was evidenced by the morphological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal decomposition studies. As a result, the presence of MDI significantly improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites. In addition, the effect of starch concentration on the various performances of the resulted MDI/PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites, such as morphology, vulcanization characteristics, mechanical properties, toluene swelling behavior, and thermal stability were investigated and discussed in detail. The obtained MDI/PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites exhibited superior mechanical properties to carbon black/SBR (CB/SBR) composites, demonstrating the potential use of the renewable starch as a substitute for CB in the rubber compounds.

  • Effects of modification of silver nanoparticles on the polymerization rate and morphology of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/silver microspheres prepared by suspension polymerization of MMA were investigated. The silver nanoparticles and their surface hydrophilicity played an important role in the polymerization rate and the morphology of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/silver microspheres. The polymerization rate increased slightly with modified silver nanoparticles. PMMA/silver microspheres with conversion up to 85% were obtained in spite of the low polymerization temperature. Due to the change of hydrophilicity of silver nanoparticles, different appearances of the microspheres having golf ball-like convex surfaces or concave surfaces were observed. As the hydrophilicity of silver was decreased, stable nanocomposites were prepared.

  • The transesterification reaction between ethanolamine and methyl-methacrylate was kinetically investigated in the presence of various metal acetate catalysts at $110^{\circ}C$. The transesterification was found to obey first-order kinetice with respect to the concentration of ethanolamine and methyl-methacrylate, respectively. By the Arrhenius plot, the activation energy has been calculated as 11.9 Kcal with lead acetate catalyst, 14.7 Kcal without catalyst. The reactivities has highest value where the electronegativity and instability constant (Kij) values for the metal acetate catalysts are about 1.6.

  • The transesterification reaction between diethanolamine and methyl methacrylate was kinetically investigated in the presence of various metal acetate catalysts at $120^{\circ}C$. The amount of reacted methyl methacrylate was measured by gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, and the reaction rate also measured from the amount of reaction products and reactants under each catalyst. The transesterification reaction was carried out in the first order with respect to the concentration of diethanolamine and methyl methacrylate, respectively. The over-all order is 2nd. The apparent rate constant was found to obey first-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of catalyst. The maximum reaction rate was appeared at the range of 1.4 to 1.6 of electronegativity of metal ions and instability constant of metal acetates.

  • In this study, the tensile adhesion strength was evaluated according to KS F 4932 to assess the suitability of MMA-based repair materials for concrete roads. Two types of MMA were used. Mortar mock-ups were made and tested for adhesion strength in three different surface conditions: air, water, and salt water. Both showed strengths above the standardized strength of 0.6 MPa. Type B, which has a relatively low adhesion strength, is considered more suitable.

  • Polyurethane(PU) have an excellent flexibility and toughness so that it has been widely used as an elastomer. PMMA was blended with PU to improve the impact property. Five types of PU, having different molecular weight and different polyol types, were prepared and blended with PMMA in order to investigate the effect of molecular weight and polyol type of PU on property of PU-PMMA blend. Tensile strength of PU-PMMA blend was determined by Inston. Differential Scanning Calorymetry(DSC) and Scanning. Elctron Microscopy(SEM) were used to observe morphology change and glass transition temperature changes of PU-PMMA blends. Transparency of PU-PMMA blends was determined by haze meter. But, owing to intrinsic incompatability of PU-PMMA, Low impact strength of PMMA wasn't improved through PU-PMMA blend. therefore, polyurethane dimethacrylate(PUD), having similiar chemical structure to PU and two vinyl group at both ends, was prepared and reacted with methyl methacrylate(MMA) to form crosslinked copolymer Mechanical property of this crosslinked polymer, such as impact strength and transparency, was investigated by Instron, Izod type (Cantilever beam) impact tester and haze meter. Results of these measurements showed that crosslinked copolymer of PUD-MMA was better impact resistance than PMMA and maintained similar transparency to PMMA.
