  • Global climatic changes are expected to influence various biogeochemical processes in wetland ecosystems. In particular, coastal mud flat is anticipated to be affected directly by temperature increase as well as indirectly by a sea level rise and changes in precipitation. This study aimed to determine changes in methane production under different temperature and salinity by employing a laboratory-scale manipulation experiment. Soil samples were collected from a mud flat in Dong-Gum Kang-Hwa island in winter and two types of experiments were conducted. In the first experiment soil samples at 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm depth were incubated under same salinity with pore water and diluted salinity to 50 % of natural condition for 20 days and methane production was measured every other days. In the second experiment, soil samples at 5-10 cm depth were incubated in different temperature, $5^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, under same salinity conditions with first experiment for 31 days and methane production was measured. Results of the first experiment revealed that higher amount of methane was produced at 5-10 cm depth, and salinity effect was predominant at the end of the experiment. The second experiment showed that methane production was higher in $15^{\circ}C$ than $5^{\circ}C$. In addition, methane production was higher when sea water diluted to 50 % compared to control. These results suggest that methane production is highly influenced by changes in temperature and salinity in coastal mud flat. And that global climatic change may induce biological feedback by affecting production of another greenhouse gas, namely methane from coastal mud flat.

  • This study was conducted to find out the behavior of anaerobic microorganisms and anaerobic decomposition products of rice straw in the strict anaerobic condition. The number of methanogenic bacteria were more isolated than cellulolytic bacteria from the digester decaying rice straw during the entire incubation time. The activity of anaerobic microorganisms, such as methanogens and cellulolytics, were high the early incubation time in the treatment of rice straw with urea, but without urea was low at that time and increased moderately after 10 days incubation. Volatile fatty acid as intermediate anaerobic decomposition products had a longer retention time and higher accumulation rate in the treatment of rice straw without urea than with urea, and predominant fatty acid was propionic acid. Gas generation rate as final products were very intimate relationship with the activity of methanogenic bacteria. Average Eh value was -250mV during the incubation time and $CH_4$ : $CO_2$ percent ratio was about 60~65 : 35~40 in this Eh value. Decomposition rate of rice straw calculated from $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ gas wars 45.6% for 50 days in the treatment of rice straw with urea, and 36.8% without urea.

  • In this study, core sediments and pore water were analysed to identify the origin of organic matter and Bas in late Quaternary sediments from the northwestern Ulleung Basin of the East Sea. C/N and C/S ratios in the sediments show that the organic matter in the study area originated predominantly from marine algae. However, the results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicate that the organic matter has an origin of the land-plant (Type III), locating in the immature stage. These different results might be due to the heavy oxidizing of the organic matter during sinking down to the seafloor or after deposition in the sediments. Concentration of sulfate in the pore water decreases gradually with core depth, while concentration of $CH_4$ increases gradually with core depth. This indicates that sulfate reduction and methanogenesis occurred actively in the sediments. Also, it is likely that the compositions of $CH_4$ are characterized as a more biogenic origin, mostly caused by microbial activity, rather than a thermogenic one.

  • Synthetic natural gas was producd by the reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen via methanation. Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst supported on $Al_2O_3$ for methanation was prepared using deposition-precipitation method. For the comparison, Ni, Co monometallic catalyst was prepared using the same method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by TEM, XRD and TPR and applied to methanation reaction. The catalysts prepared using deposition-precipitation method showed the high metal dispersion. The activity of Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst was higher than that of Ni, Co monometallic catalyst. TPR measurements indicated that Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst had more active hydrogen species than Ni, Co monometallic catalyst due to the synergetic effect in the presence of Ni and Co.

  • We investigated a bias effect for diamond films deposited by a HFCVD(Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition) method using a methane-hydrogen gas mixture. During deposition total chamber pressure, methane concentration, filament temperature and substrate temperature was 20 torr, 1.0%, $2100^{\circ}C$ and $980^{\circ}C$ respectively. Also DC bias was applied during both the nucleation stage and the growth stage systematically. We found that negative bias enhanced the nucleation density at the nucleation stage, but it made a bad influence on the morpholohy of films at the growth stage. Positive bias enhanced the growth rate and resulted in a good morpholohy of films. Therefore we concluded that it was effective to apply the negative bias during the nucleation stage and then to switch into the positive bias during the growth stage in the fabrication of diamond films.

  • An amine rich diet with nitrate was incubated in simulated saliva, gastric juice, kale juice, and its ascorbate and methanol soluble portions (5, 10, 15 and 30 mL) for 1 hr at 37$^{\circ}C$ and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was detected in the digestion sample, Kale juice and its ascorbate and methanol soluble portions at 30mL inhibited NDMA formation by 60.1$\pm$4.4%, 49.3$\pm$1.2% and 50.1$\pm$2.0%, respectively. The methanol soluble portion was further fractionated by preparative-LC (prep-LC). Nitrite-scavenging effects of 7 methanol soluble portion (Kl, K2, K3, K4, K5, K6 and K7) in kale juice were 2.0 ~56.2%. Among seven fractions, K3, K4, K5 and K7 exhibited weakly on nitrite scavenging effect. Fraction Kl and K2 inhibited NDMA formation by 71.0 and 65.5%, respectively. Fraction Kl and K2 was further separated by prep-LC into 6 subfractions (Kla, Klb, Klc, K2a, K2b and 2nc). Those subfractions inhibited NDMA formation by 40.9 ~80.4%. The K2a subfraction was screened by MS, $^1$H-NMR, $^{13}$ C-NMR and DEPT spectrum.

  • This study was conducted to analyze and determine formation potentials for chlorination disinfection by-products (DBPs) from twenty amino acid compounds with or without $Br^-$. Two of twenty amino acid compound were tryptophan and tyrosine that were relatively shown high for formation of trihalomethanes (THMs)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Other 18 compounds were shown low for formation of THMs/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Five amino acid compounds that were tryptophan, tyrosine, asparagine, aspartic acid and histidine were shown high for formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented. Although formation of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was dominated in asparagine, aspartic acid and histidine, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was dominated in tryptophan and tryptophan. The formation of haloacetnitriles (HANs)/DOC whether or not $Br^-$ presented was high in Aspartic acid, histidine, asparagine, tyrosine and tryptophan. Specially, aspartic acid was detected 660.2 ${\mu}$g/mg (HAN/DOC). Although the formation of chloralhydrate (CH)/DOC was shown high in asparagine, aspartic acid, histidine, methionine, tryptophan and tyrosine, the formation of Chloropicrin (CP)/DOC was low (1 ${\mu}$g/mg) in twenty amino acid compounds. The formations of THM, HAA and HAN were also investigated in functional groups of amino acids. The highest formation of THM was shown in amino acids compounds (tryptophan and tyrosine) with an aromatic functional group. Highest, second-highest, third-highest and fourth-highest functional groups for formation of HAA were aromatic, neutral, acidic and basic respectively. In order of increasing functional groups for formation of HAN were acidic, basic, neutral and aromatic.
