A WLAN Pre-Authentication Scheme Based on Fast Channel Switching for 3G-WLAN Interworking (3G-WLAN Interworking 환경에서의 빠른 채널스위칭 기반의 무선랜 선인증 기법)

  • The current trend of the handover authentication delay time is gradually increased according to the interworking between 3G cellular network and WLANs. Therefore, authentication mechanism minimized in delay is required to perform the seamless handover and support the inter-subnet and inter-domain handover. In this paper, we propose a novel pre-authentication scheme based on the fast channel switching which directly performs the authentication with the next access point in advance. In addition, the proposed scheme is efficient in the inter-domain handover and can be easily implemented in current WLANs since it just modifies the client side of user. To analysis and evaluate our scheme, we compare the packet loss ratio and the delay time with the two standard 802.11 authentication schemes. The analytical results show that our scheme is approximate 10 times more effective than the standard schemes in packet loss and the delay time is minimized down to 0.16 msec.

  • With the emergence of increasingly complex networks and diverse user terminals, demand for the next generation IPTV service is rapidly growing. It enables any content to seamlessly be reused on the diverse terminals as well as be broadcasted in real-time through the complex networks. In this paper, a novel security framework is proposed for the real-time and reusable IPTV services. The proposed framework is advantageous over the conventional content protection techniques in easily producing the scalable content with lightweight, perceptual, transcodable, and adjustable security features. It does not only ensure end-to-end security over the entire service range based on a single security mechanism, but also can control a level of security while dynamically transcoding the original content. This approach basically performs selective encryption during and after the compression using scalable video coding. The suitability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through experiments with a practical service scenario. Therefore, it is expected that security technology alone could practically contribute to creating new business opportunities for IPTV services.

Shear Strength Estimation Model for Reinforced Concrete Members (철근콘크리트 부재의 전단강도 산정모델)

  • This study presents a shear strength estimation model, in which the shear failure of a reinforced concrete (RC) member is assumed to be governed by the flexure-shear mechanism. Two shear demand curves and corresponding potential capacity curves for cracked tension and uncracked compression zones are derived, for which the bond mechanism developed between reinforcing bars and surrounding concrete is considered in flexural analysis. The shear crack concentration factor is also addressed to consider the so-called size effect induced in large RC members. In addition,unlike exising methods, a new formulation was addressed to consider the interaction between the shear contributions of concrete and stirrup. To verify the proposed method, an extensive shear database was established, and it appeared that the proposed method can capture the shear strengths of the collected test specimens regardless of their material properties, geometrical features, presence of stirrups, and bond characteristics.

  • Vibrotactile feedback is a major function of the latest touch displays, which greatly improves the user's operability and immersion when interacting with the interface on the screen. In this study, we propose a vibrotactile actuator suitable for mounting on the back side of a mid- to large-sized display because it can generate a strong vibration output by applying an electrostatic force-based mechanism and can be manufactured in a thin flat panel type. The proposed actuator was developed in a structure capable of amplifying the vibration force by alternating up and down with electrostatic force by the upper and lower electrodes that are spaced apart from the electrically grounded mass suspended from a radial leaf spring. As a result of the performance evaluation, the developed bar-type module with two built-in actuators showed excellent vibration output of up to 3.3 g at 170 Hz, confirming the possibility of providing haptic feedback in medium and large touch displays.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in reducing greenhouse gases in all industrial fields. In the construction industry, studies have been conducted for the use of high-volume fly ash concrete to replace cement with fly ash. Quantitative measurements of cement hydration and fly ash reactivity enable a clear understanding of the strength development mechanism of high-volume fly ash concrete. It is very difficult to describe the reactivity in a simple way because the hydration and pozzolanic reactions of cement paste containing fly ash are very complex and the composition of the hydration product cannot be accurately determined. This study investigated the hydration and mechanical properties of high volume fly ash (HVFA) cement according to the substitution rate of fly ash (FA). The hydration degree of cement and the reactivity of FA were evaluated through the selective dissolution method and the non-evaporable water content of the paste according to age. In addition, compressive strength was measured using HVFA mortar specimens according to age. As a result of the experiment, as the substitution rate of fly ash increased, the hydration degree of cement increased, but the reactivity of FA decreased.

Development of Ruthenium/TEMPO/Nitrate Catalyst System for Efficient Oxidation of Isosorbide (아이소소바이드의 효과적 산화반응을 위한 루테늄/템포/나이트레이트 촉매 시스템 개발)

  • This research work reports the development of a Ruthenium/2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO)/nitrate catalyst system for the highly selective transformation of isosorbide (1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-glucitol) to isosorbide-diketone (2,6-dioxabicyclo (3,3,0)octan-4,8-one). Isosorbide is a critical platform molecule for future manufacturing processes. TEMPO has been utilized to convert alcohols to carbonyl compounds for a long time. The optimal chemical reaction condition was found to be when using isosorbide (0.5 mmol) with supported Ru (10 mol%), TEMPO (5 mol%), and sodium nitrate (0.03 mmol) in the presence of acetic acid (3 ml) as a solvent at 50 ℃ and 1 atm oxygen pressure. This catalyst system demonstrated good selectivity (> 97%) and yield (87%) with respect to the desired product, in addition to a putative catalytic double oxidation mechanism.

  • Crystalline calcium carbonate (CaCO3) occurs in various geological and aqueous environments as calcite, aragonite, and vaterite. These minerals also have practical applications in engineered settings. Synthetic methods of calcium carbonate have been developed for scientific research and technical applications. For example, these methods have become widely adopted for studying the formation of CaCO3 minerals and (geo-)chemical processes involving these minerals in natural and engineered systems. Furthermore, these methods have the potential to be applied in various technical and biomedical fields. Water-based synthesis is particularly important for simulating the formation of calcium carbonate minerals in natural aqueous environments. This review paper describes the procedures and experimental conditions for water-based synthetic methods of each calcium carbonate polymorph, compares the morphological and structural features of the resulting crystals, and analyzes the crystallization mechanisms.

Oxidative Stress in Spermatozoa during Boar Semen Storage (돼지 정액을 저장하는 동안 정자에 미치는 산화스트레스)

  • Oxidative stress is a critical factor affecting the quality and viability of sperm during boar semen storage. Oxidative stress is also a significant concern during the process of freezing semen. The process of semen storage involves exposing the sperm to various stressors, including temperature changes, cryoprotectants, and extended periods of incubation. In addition, oxidative stress can lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the sperm, resulting in oxidative damage to cellular components, such as lipids, proteins, and DNA. Striking a balance between ROS production and the antioxidant defense system is crucial for maintaining sperm viability and functionality during semen storage. Moreover, the prolonged storage of boar semen leads to an increase in ROS levels, which can impair sperm motility, membrane integrity, and DNA integrity. ROS-induced lipid peroxidation affects the fluidity and stability of sperm membranes, leading to decreased sperm motility. Moreover, oxidative damage to the DNA can result in DNA fragmentation, compromising the genetic integrity of the sperm. In conclusion, oxidative stress is a significant challenge in maintaining sperm quality during boar semen storage. Understanding the mechanisms underlying oxidative stress and their impacts on sperm function is crucial for developing effective strategies to minimize oxidative damage and improve sperm storage outcomes.

Fog Type Classification and Occurrence Characteristics Based on Fog Generation Mechanism in the Korean Peninsula (안개 생성 메커니즘 기반 안개 유형 분류 및 한반도 지역내 발생 특성 분석)

  • To investigate the occurrence characteristics and types of fog on the Korean Peninsula over the past three years (2020 to 2022), data from 96 synoptic meteorological observatories and 21 ocean buoys were collected and analyzed. We included precipitation fog, which occurs after precipitation events, and cloud-base lowering fog, which is caused by the development of lower-level clouds, with a total six subtypes of fog. In the case of cloud-base lowering fog, the occurrence frequency at 2.6% was not high at 2.6%, but the duration of low visibility below 200 m was very long at 6.9 hours. The seasonal frequency of fog is low in spring and winter, high in summer over islands and coastal areas, and high in autumn over inland areas. The frequency of inland fog, which is characterized by high radiation fog and dense fog, requires attention in terms of transportation safety, with an occurrence time of 0500 LST to 1000 LST. Therefore, systematic analysis of precipitation fog and cloud-base lowering, as well as radiation and advection fog, is required in the analysis of recognizing fog as a disaster and causing transportation disorders.

Haptic System to Provide the Realistic Sensation of Virtual Impact (사실적인 가상 임팩트 감각 전달을 위한 햅틱 시스템)

  • As an effort to maximize the immersiveness of user experience in virtual reality, there have been constant efforts to provide a user with tactile sensation by providing haptic feedback. Most of the haptic feedback methods, however, can create only limited or unrealistic haptic sensations since they utilize affordable actuators such as a vibrotactile actuator. When it comes to martial arts training or a game, the limitation of such haptic feedback is apparent due to the significant difference between the physical impact of hitting an object and the sensation departed from a vibrotactile actuator. Noting this, we proposed a haptic impact system that can create a haptic impact when the user hits a virtual object with the fist. The haptic interface uses a quick-return mechanism that can deliver haptic impact feedback to a user's fist. The realism of the haptic impact was evaluated by conducting a human-subject experiment. The results indicate a significant effect of haptic feedback on the realism of the virtual impact.
