Advantageous features of flash memory are stimulating its exploitation in mobile and ubiquitous related devices. The hardware characteristics of flash memory however place restrictions upon this current trend. In this paper, a cleaning policy for flash memory is proposed in order to decrease the necessary penally for recycling of memory minimizing the degradation of performance at the same time. The proposed cleaning algorithm is based on partitioning of candidate memory regions, to be reclaimed as free, into a number of groups. In addition, in order to improve the balanced utilization of the entire flash memory space in terms of 'wearing-out', a free segment selection algorithm is discussed. The impact of the proposed algorithms is evaluated through a number of experiments. Moreover, the composition of the optimal configuration featuring the proposed methods is tested through experiments.
This paper introduces the design and implementation of a flash memory simulator to emulate a real flash memory. Since this simulator provides exact execution time information and parameter testing functions as well as the type, total capacity, block size, and page size of flash memory, it can be used as a real flash memory as viewed by the operating system. Furthermore, the simulator provides time logging functions of the internal routines of the flash memory management software allowing the monitoring of bottlenecks within the software. Finally, we show the performance measurements of applications under the Linux operating systems on both the simulator and a test board verifying the simulator's use as a replacement for real flash memory.

Recently, the memory is used in many electronic devices, thus, the many researchers make a study of the memory. To increase a storage capacity per memory block, the researchers study for reducing the fabrication process of memory and multi-level cell memory which is storing more than 2-bits in a cell. However, the multi-level cell memory has low bit-error rates by various noises. In this paper, we study the noise of multi-level cell memory, and we propose the channel model of multi-level cell memory.

This paper presents a design method for an asynchronous memory with a completion signal generation circuit meeting D-I model. The proposed design method is to generates a completion signal with dummy cell and a completion signal generation circuit to indicate completion of the required read or write operation to the processor. Dividing a memory exponentially to consider delay of a bit-line and a memory cell makes memory operates as a D-I model with minimum addition of redundant circuit. The proposed memory partitioning algorithm that divides entire memory into the several partitions with a exponentially increased size reduces the memory access delay by 40% compared with a conventional partitioning method to the same size.

In this paper, the Linux kernel memory map was analyzed as the approach to Improving performance for Embedded Linux system. Since the Linux kernel memory map supporting a stability and various H/W platforms and in which it becomes to the general purpose system with optimization manages the role of being important in the booting time and the efficient system utilization of resources, the analysis of the kernel memory map is required for the performance improvement of the Embedded Linux system in which it is restrictive the resources. According to the analysis result, and of the Linux kernel memory, the booting speed of and improvement of the memory efficiency were confirmed. It is therefore considered that the proposed in this paper and kernel memory allocation method are suitable to the memory availability improvement of the Embedded Linux system.
This paper suggests the CAMD(Compression Algorithm for in-Memory Data) algorithm that is not moved the pages into the swap space by assigning the compressed cache area in the main memory. The CAMD algorithm that supports the virtual memory system takes high memory usability and performance benefit by reducing the page fault. The memory data is not general data. It is extraordinary data format. In general it consists of specific form of data. Therefore. the CAMD algorithm can compress this data efficiently.

This paper proposes a built-in-self-repair (BISR) structure using 2-dimensional spare memory to effectively self-repair faults of an embedded memory. In case of multiple faults in the same row (column) of an embedded memory, the previous method using 1-D spare column (row) memory needs the same number of spare memory columns (rows) as the number of faults to self-repair them. while the new method using 2-D spare memory needs only one spare row (column) to self-repair them. Also, the virtual divided memory is adopted to be able to self-repair using not a full spare column memory but the only partial spare column memory corresponding to the faults. A self-repair circuit with $64\times1-bit$ core memory and $2\times8$ 2-D spare memory is designed. And the circuit includes a built-in-self-test block using the 13N March algorithm. The circuit has been implemented using the $0.25{\mu}m$ MagnaChip CMOS process and has $1.1\times0.7mm^2$ chip area with 10,658 transistors.
In recent years, the cost of automotive ECU (Electronic Control Unit) has accounted for more than 30% of total car production cost. However, the complexity of testing and debugging an automotive ECU is increasing because automobile manufacturers outsource automotive ECU production. Therefore, a large amount of cost and time are spent to localize faults during testing an automotive ECU. In order to solve these problems, we propose a fault localization method in memory for developers who run the integration testing of automotive ECU. In this method, memory is partitioned by utilizing memory map, and fault-suspiciousness for each partition is calculated by utilizing memory update information. Then, the fault-suspicious region for partitions is decided based on calculated fault-suspiciousness. The preliminary result indicated that the proposed method reduced the fault-suspicious region to 15.01(%) of memory size.

Recently, as the number of mobile apps rapidly increases, the memory size of smartphones keeps increasing. Smartphone memory consists of DRAM and as it is a volatile medium, continuous refresh operations for all cells should be performed to maintain the contents. Thus, the power consumption of memory increases in proportion to the DRAM size of the system. There are attempts to configure the memory system with low-power non-volatile memory instead of DRAM to reduce the power consumption of smartphones. However, non-volatile memory has weaknesses in write operations, so analysis of write behaviors is a prerequisite to realize this in practical systems. In this paper, we extract memory reference traces of mobile apps and analyze their characteristics specially focusing on write operations. The results of this paper will be helpful in the design of memory management systems consisting of non-volatile memory in future smartphones.
