A Video Bitrate Adaptation Algorithm for DASH-Based Multimedia Streaming Services to Enhance User QoE (DASH 기반 멀티미디어 스트리밍 서비스에서 사용자 체감품질 향상을 위한 비트율 적응 기법)

  • Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) is the most recent and promising technology to support high quality streaming services. In dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH), a client consecutively estimates the available network bandwidth and decides the transmission rate for the forthcoming video chunks to be downloaded. In this paper, we propose a novel rate adaptation algorithm called quality of experience QoE-enhanced adaptation algorithm over DASH (QAAD), which preserves the minimum buffer length to avoid interruption and minimizes the video quality changes during the playback. We implemented a DASH test bed and conducted extensive experiments. Experimental results demonstrate that under fluctuating network conditions, QAAD provides seamless streaming with stabilized video quality while the previous buffer-aware algorithm (i.e., QDASH[9]) frequently changes the video quality and undergoes the interruption.

  • General-Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) build massively parallel architecture and apply multithreading technology to explore parallelism. By using programming models like CUDA, and OpenCL, GPGPUs are becoming the best in exploiting plentiful thread-level parallelism caused by parallel applications. Unfortunately, modern GPGPU cannot efficiently utilize its available hardware resources for numerous general-purpose applications. One of the primary reasons is the inefficiency of existing warp/thread block schedulers in hiding long latency instructions, resulting in lost opportunity to improve the performance. This paper studies the effects of hardware thread scheduling policy on GPGPU performance. We propose a novel warp scheduling policy that can alleviate the drawbacks of the traditional round-robin policy. The proposed warp scheduler first classifies the warps of a thread block into two groups, warps with long latency and warps with short latency and then schedules the warps with long latency before the warps with short latency. Furthermore, to support the proposed warp scheduler, we also propose a supplemental technique that can dynamically reduce the number of streaming multiprocessors to which will be assigned thread blocks when encountering a high contention degree at the memory and interconnection network. Based on our experiments on a 15-streaming multiprocessor GPGPU platform, the proposed warp scheduling policy provides an average IPC improvement of 7.5% over the baseline round-robin warp scheduling policy. This paper also shows that the GPGPU performance can be improved by approximately 8.9% on average when the two proposed techniques are combined.

  • 최근 감정인식 기술은 다양한 IoT 센서 디바이스의 등장으로 단일 소스기반의 감정인식 기술 연구에서 멀티모달 센서기반 감정인식 연구로 변화하고 있으며, 특히 오디오와 영상을 이용한 감정인식 기술의 연구가 활발하게 진행되는 있다. 기존의 오디오 및 영상기반 감정신 연구는 두 개의 센서 테이터를 동시에 입력 저장한 오픈 데이터베이스를 활용하여 다른 이벤트 처리 없이 각각의 데이터에서 특징을 추출하고 하나의 분류기를 통해 감정을 인식한다. 이러한 기법은 사람이 말하지 않는 구간, 얼굴이 보이지 않는 구간의 이벤트 정보처리에 대한 대처가 떨어지고 두 개의 정보를 종합하여 하나의 감정도 도출하는 디시전 레벨의 퓨저닝 연구가 부족하다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 오디오 및 영상에 내포되어 있는 이벤트 정보를 추출하고 오디오 및 영상 기반의 분리된 인지모듈을 통해 감정들을 인식하며, 도출된 감정들을 시간단위로 통합하여 디시전 퓨전하는 실시간 오디오 및 영상기반의 감정인식 프레임워크를 제안한다.

Real-Time Bandwidth Management Service for Effective Multiple Isochronous Streaming Transmission in IEEE1394 based Home Network (IEEE1394 기반 홈네트워크에서 효율적인 다중 등시성 스트리밍 전송을 위한 실시간 대역폭 관리 서비스)

  • In order to support multiple multimedia streaming services in home networks, many critical issues must be considered. In addition, handling the shortage of network bandwidth is one of the most significant and complicated issues. In this paper, real-time bandwidth management service is suggested as a solution to the problem regarding the IEEE1394-based home network. In order to handle the shortage of network bandwidth and to enhance the bus utilization rate, the proposed service combines two methods. First, the bus bandwidth management function determines the state of the network bandwidth and restores the residual bandwidth, which is excessively occupied by a streaming service, to the available free bandwidth. Second, the Isochronous Streaming (IS) Scheduler manages all streaming services according to priority. In order to test the proposed service, we implemented a prototype steaming management middleware and evaluated it by using the IEEE1394 network test-bed.

Hybrid Scheduling Algorithm for Guaranteeing QoS of Real-time Traffic in WCDMA Enhanced Uplink (WCDMA 개선된 상향링크에서 실시간 트래픽의 서비스 품질을 보장하는 하이브리드 스케줄링 알고리즘)

  • As a demand for high speed uplink packet services increases, the WCDMA enhanced uplink, also known as high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA), has been specified in release 6 by 3GPP. This HSUPA will provide various types of multimedia services, such as real-time video streaming, gaming, VoIP, and FTP. Generally, the performance of HSUPA is dominated by scheduling policy. Therefore, it is required to design a scheduling algorithm considering the traffic characteristics to provide QoS guaranteed services in various traffic environments. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm considering the traffic characteristics to guarantee QoS in a mixed traffic environment. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheduling algorithm is evaluated in terms of average packet delay, packet delay jitter, and system throughput using a system level simulator.
