This study was performed to obtain a basic materials for improvement of garlic storage ability. The "Namhae jaerae" of southern strain and the "Dalsung jaerae" of northern strain were harvested by period, their stems were cut at 7cm and 25cm from disk and then placed them in blast drying system 12 hours per day at $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 days, or in natural state. The decrease rate of bulb weight was compared and rooting, sprouting, the rate of decay was investigated between natural dry(conventional method) and hot-air dry (blast drying system). The results obtained were as follows. In the case of the decrease rate of bulb weight after hot-air dry; 7cm plot" "Namhae jaerae" was similiar to one of 13th day of natural dry and 25cm plot 14th day. In "Dalsung jaerae" 7cm plot of early, common and late harvest was respectively similiar to one of 22nd, 18th and 16th day of natural dry, 25cm plot of early, common and late harvest showed the same decrease rate of bulb weight as that of 18th, 16th and 14th day of natural dry respectively. In the case of rooting and sprouting in sand culture at the early period of storage, hot-air dry showed more prolonged tendency than conventional drying method. In the case of clove state in the latter period of storage, number of eatable cloves was more numerous and number of decayed cloves were less in blast drying system than in conventional method.
Effects of harvest date, number of the leaves remained on stump after flower cutting, duration of cold treatment on the growth and flowering of L. elegans 'Connecticut King' bulb were tested. Shoot emerging rate increased over 90% by delayed cold treatment, late harvesting time and more leaves remained. Flowering rate increased over 90% when conducted cold treatment of 90 days to the premature bulb at flowering date, the bulb matured for 50 days with 10 leaves and the bulb matured for over 30 days with 20 leaves, and when conducted cold treatment of 50 days to the bulb matured for over 30 days with all leaves. Delayed cold treatment duration shortened days needed to shoot emergence and flowering. Especially days to flower of the premature bulb at flowering date were the shortest of all treatments, and can be flowered within 100 days after planting. In generally, plant height, number of flowers per plant and stem diameter generally increased by longer bulb maturing period after flower cuting, and the premature bulb harvested at flowering date showed poor growing and flowering responses. But, if used the larger size bulb, it is believed that the prematured bulb can be forced to flower normally in current year without bulb maturing period.

Wood biomass production at 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year rotations on both low and upper hills at 2m 2m spacing (25,000 trees/ha) was studied for a six-year period with following 12 species; Lespedeza cyrtobotrya Amorpha fruticosa. Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer saccharinum, Platanus orientalis Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa $F_1$, Salix alba, Pinus rigida, Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica, A. inokumai A. gultinosa, and A. incana. In One-year rotation, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya produced largest amoung of biomass (2.6 t/ha/year, fresh weight) and Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa $F_1$ the second largest (2.2 t/ha/year) on low hill. In two-year rotation, the latter produced the largest amount (4.8 t/ha/year) and Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica second largest (2.8 t/ha/year) on low hill. In three-year rotation, the largest weight (11.2 t/ha/year) was produced by Robinia pseudoacacia and the second largest (6.2 t/ha/year) by Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica on low hill Amorpha fruticosa, Acer saccharinum, Platanus orientalis and Salix alba were not suitable for biomass or fuelwood productio due to poor growth. Biomass yield on upper hill was reduced considerably for all tewlve species, with less than 4 t/year at maximum Only nitrogen fixing species (Robinia and Alnus species) are recommended on upper hill for biomass production wood sprouting ability of species was generally associated with good biomass production. Calori values of ovendry wood ranged from 4,485 cal/g for Salix alba to 5,125 cal/g for Alnus glutinosa. For maximum biomass production a three-year ratation with coppice is preferred to one-year and two-year roataions The best species appeared to be Robinia pseudoacacia and Alnus hirsuta var sibirica.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimal sub-zero temperature for storage of two garlic cultivars, the northern ecotype 'Jaerae' and the southern ecotype 'Daeseo'. These cultivars of garlic bulbs were stored at different temperature (room temperature, $0^{\circ}C$, and $-4^{\circ}C$) conditions after predrying. Southern ecotype garlic showed higher weight loss than northern ecotype garlic. Northern ecotype garlic at $-4^{\circ}C$ exhibited less than 5% of weight loss during 10 month storage. Sprouting rate was higher in southern than in northern ecotype at room temperature storage. The value of injury by disease and insect was similar between southern ecotype and northern ecotype for 5 month storage, and then northern ecotype showed higher value of injury by disease and insect than southern ecotype. Hunter 'b' value of northern ecotype garlic was the lowest at $-4^{\circ}C$ storage. Northern ecotype garlic showed no cold injury at freezing point temperature storage. However, southern ecotype garlic had $0{\sim}5.3%$ cold injury occurrence at $-4^{\circ}C$ storage. Respiration and ethylene production exhibited the highest at room temperature storage, those had the slight increase at $0^{\circ}C$ and $-4^{\circ}C$ storages. Northern ecotype showed higher enzymatic pyruvic acid and fructan contents than those of southern ecotype. Enzymatic pyruvic acid content increased and fructan contents decreased during storage time.

This experiment was carried out to select white asparagus varieties suitable for shading culture in greenhouse. Eight white and one green varieties were tested. Seeds were sown in 72-cell trays in a glasshouse on 24 Dec. 2008 and the seedlings were transplanted in a P.E house on 22 May 2009. Planting distances were 30 cm apart in a raw and 125 cm between the raws. For white asparagus production, small tunnel ($210cm{\times}160cm$) was established inside the P.E house, and covered with black and white P.E film (0.1 mm) on 5 March 2010. Days to sprouting took 5 days in 'Ravel' variety and took 16 to 18 days in 'Backlim', 'Horlim', 'Herkolim' varieties. The number of spear was highest in 'Ravel' with 6 and lowest in 'Backlim' with 3.7. The spear weight was heaviest in 'Herkolim' with 25.6 g and lightest in 'Ravel' with 15.6 g. The highest total yield was in 'Herkolim' with 296 kg/10a, followed by 'Super welcome' with 275 kg/10a and lowest in 'Rapsody' with 176 kg/10a. Marketable yields in 'Super welcome' and 'Herkolim' were 241 kg/10a and 239 kg/10a, respectively, and the yield was lowest in 'Rapsody' with 139 kg/10a. The L grade (over 20 g of spear weight) was highest in 'Herkolim'. Accordingly, 'Herkolim' was the most suitable white asparagus variety among the tested varieties for shading cultivation in greenhouse.
The natural regeneration pattern was evaluated for 11 useful hardwood species in the natural deciduous forest where three different silvicultural practices (two-storied system, shelterwood system, and selection system) were applied and passed by three growing seasons. The study forest was presently dominated by Quercus mongolica in the upper canopy. However, since the analysis indicated that the number of regenerated seedlings of Acer mono and Fraxinus rhynchophylla was fairly abundant enough, these two species were anticipated to have the possibility to be among dominant species along with Quercus mongolica. The results of seedling occurrence after regenerating cutting showed that the number of seedlings was estimated for 3,145/ha(10 times of overstory) in the two-storied system, 6,885/ha(9 times of overstory) in the shelterwood system, and 2,275/ha(4 times of overstory) in the selection system. The estimation was varied by species, and the number of stump sprout was more abundant. The proportion of seedlings was high in 60~80% of overstory density and 60~70% of understory coverage, and high in the site of less than $25^{\circ}$ of slope and from southwest to northwest of aspect. These results were still varied by species. Stump diameter and height had little influence on the occurrence of sprout.
The objective of this study was to find eco-revegetation measures recycling remnant root-stock of native species which comes to be disused. The monitoring plot was established in Nov.2001 at Honam University's affliated farm that is located in Wolya-Myeon, Hampyeong-Gun, Jeollanam-Do. The plots were monitored 2 times each in Oct.2002 and Sep.2003. Sprout and survival rate of the root-stock including the effect of trunk length, antiseptic treatment, planting season and number of planted were surveyed. The results of the study were as follows Ten tree species including Zelkova serrata among twenty tree species showed outstanding sprout and survival rate (over 90 percent). The growth rate was better in the longer trunk length root-stocks (35cm) than shorter ones (10cm). There was a difference in the size of the root ball when digging the root-stocks. It showed better condition when the root ball sizes were 3 times wide and 5 times deep of the root-stocks or 5 times wide and 5 times deep. Antiseptic treatment on the cuts of the trunk of root-stocks makes a difference in the growth rate. The survival rate of the root-stock showed highest value (100%) when it was transplanted in late autumn (November). And the next best survival rate was reached when it was in early or late spring (March and May)

This study was conducted to determine the growth characteristics, and the effect of plant growth regulators on the sprouting and growth of purple nutsedge(Cyperus rotundus L.) in order to establish effective control system in lawn ground. The flowering of purple nutsedge was initiated 30 days after transplanting regardless of the transplanting time. Low temperature less than $10^{\circ}C$ after flowering was required for tuber formation, showing that the tuberization was related to air temperature. Shoot number and dry weight of underground portion of purple nutsedge was slightly affected by plant growth regulators such as benzylamino purine, abscisic acid, brassinosteroid and jasmonate. Imazaquin applied at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after transplanting induced multi-shooting and inhibited shoot growth indicating that the herbicide played a role as plant growth regulator at a concentration of 30 and 60g ai/10a. The greatest inhibition of purple nutsedge was obtained by pyrazosulfuron-ethyl as applied 1 weeks after transplanting, showing almost 100% control of purple nutsedge. Tuber of purple nutsedge composed of 61.83% of moisture, 31.60% of carbohydrates, 4.03% of crude protein, 1.57% of crude fat and 0.97% of crude ash.
This experiment was carried out in order to determine proper plant growth regulators (PGR) and their concentrations for direct shoot induction and somatic embryogenesis from leaf tissue cultures of Muscari armeniacum 'Early Giant'. Direct shoot formation from the leaf explant culture was effective only on a half-strength MS medium containing $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 2,4-D, while embryogenesis was occurred on a half-strength MS medium containing $0.1{\sim}1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IPA or without PGR. The regenerated bulblets derived from embryos or shoots were harvested and transplanted into a greenhouse. The sprouting percentage of bulblets obtained from different culture media ranged from 80 to 100% and growth of quality bulblets was enhanced when the bulblets were harvested from the medium containing $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and $1.0{\sim}3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IPA.

The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary drying effects on garlic quality, and to define the optimal secondary drying conditions for garlic preservation. The secondary drying tests used garlic that was naturally dried once and stored at low temperature. After secondary drying, the garlic was stored in a warehouse at room temperature. Tests were performed at different low-temperature storage periods (60, 105, 150, 195, and 240 days), secondary drying temperatures (35 and $40^{\circ}C$), drying times (1, 2, 3 days), and room temperature storage periods (15, 30, and 45 days). The results were compared with a non-secondary drying condition control. In general, the $40^{\circ}C$-2 days dry conditions showed the lowest weight-loss rate (5%) and rotting rate during room temperature storage. The sprouting rate increased by 20% during the initial 15 day-room temperature storage, along with a small increase after 30 days of room temperature storage. Increases in drying temperature and the period of secondary drying conditions caused a decrease in firmness. In addition, the sprouting rate was 10% higher, and rotting rate 5~10% higher, for the non-drying condition, compared to drying conditions. Based on our results, the $40^{\circ}C$-2 days drying condition is the optimal secondary drying condition for garlic storage.
