  • To develop a chemical-looping combustion technology, conceptual design of 50 kW thermal chemical-looping combustor, which is composed of two interconnected pressurized circulating fluidized beds, was performed by means of mass and energy balance calculations. A riser type fast fluidized bed was selected as an oxidizer and a bubbling fluidized bed was selected as a reducer by mass balance for the chemical-looping combustor. Calculated values of bed mass, solid circulation flux, and reactor dimension by mass and energy balance calculations were suitable for construction and operation of chemical-looping combustor. It is concluded from the comparison of the design results and operating values of commercial circulating fluidized bed that the process outline is realistic. Moreover, the previous results support that oxygen carrier particle, NiO/bentonite, fulfills the conversion rates needed for the proposed design. The effects of system capacity, metal oxide content in a oxygen carrier particle, amount of steam input, gas velocity, and solid depth on design values were investigated and the changes in the system performance can be estimated by proposed design tool.

  • 최근 수 십 년간 발전소의 연소효율은 급속히 향상되어왔으나 $CO_2$, NOx 등과 같은 온실 유해가스의 제어에 관한 심각한 문제점들을 직면한 상태이다. 발전공정에서 발생되는 온실 유해가스의 저감 방법으로 매체순환식 가스 연소발전 공정이 최근에 새로운 대안으로 제시되고 있다 그러나 매체순환식 가스연소시스템 내부의 bead상 매체입자들이 입자간 혹은 입자와 반응기 벽간의 충돌과 마찰에 의하여 마모가 되게 되고, 그 결과 원하지 않는 량의 마모입자가 배출가스와 함께 배출되게 된다. 세라믹 캔들필터는 고온고압 연소공정 등에서 배출되는 가스내의 입자상 오염물질을 회수 처리하는데 효과적인 장치로써 널리 개발되고 있다.   • The chemical-looping combustion(CLC) has advantages of no energy loss for separation of $CO_2$ without $NO_x$ formation. This CLC system consists of oxidation and reduction reactors where metal oxides particles are circulating through these two reactors. In the present study, the reaction kinetic equations of iron oxide oxygen carriers supported on bentonite have been determined by the shrinking core model. Based on the reactivity data, design values of solid circulation rate and solids inventory were determined for the rector. Two types of interconnected fluidized bed systems were designed for CLC application, one system consists of a riser and a bubbling fluidized bed, and the other one has a riser and two bubbling fluidized beds. Solid circulation rates were varied to about $30kg/m^2s$ by aeration into a loop-seal. Solid circulation rate increases with increasing aeration velocity and it increases further with an auxiliary gas flow into the loop-seal. As solid circulation rate is increased, solid hold up in the riser increases. A typical gas leakage from the riser to the fluidized bed is found to be less than 1%.

  • Redox characteristics of cobalt oxide-based oxygen carriers were tested for chemical-looping combustion. Cobalt oxide was chosen as active metal oxide and $CoAl_2O_4$ was compared with YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) as a binder. Cobalt oxide/$CoAl_2O_4$ was prepared by sol-gel method. Hydrogen fuel was reacted with metal oxide and then the reduced metal was successively oxidized by air. The effects of reaction temperature were measured and the regenerabilies during 10 cycles were examined by a TGA. In regenerability of cobalt oxide/YSZ and cobalt oxide/$CoAl_2O_4$, after they showed above 90% conversion in first reduction, they were stabilized in about 70-75% conversion. From reaction rate constant obtained, the activation energies of cobalt oxide/YSZ in oxidation and reduction were 51.47kJ/mol and 7.71kJ/mol respectively.

  • The intrinsic $CO_2$ separation and hydrogen production system is a novel concept using oxidation and reduction reactions of oxygen carrier for both $CO_2$ capture and high purity hydrogen production. The process consists of a fuel reactor (FR), a steam reactor (SR) and an air reactor (AR). The natural gas ($CH_4$) is oxidized to $CO_2$ and steam by the oxygen carrier in FR, whereas the steam is reduced to hydrogen by oxidation of the reduced oxygen carrier in SR. The oxygen carrier is fully oxidized by air in AR. In the present study, the chemical looping moving bed reactor having 200 L/h hydrogen production capacity is designed and the hydrodynamic properties were determined. Compared with other reactors, two moving bed reactors (FR, SR) were used to obtain high conversion and selectivity of the oxygen carrier. The desirable solid circulation rates are calculated to be in the range of $20{\sim}100kg/m^2s$ from the conceptual design. The solid circulation rate can be controlled by aeration in a loop-seal. To maintain the gas velocity in the moving beds (FR, SR) at the minimum fluidization velocity is found to be suitable for the stable operation. The solid holdup in moving beds decrease with increasing gas velocity and solid circulation rate.
