  • In this study, we research the influence of butt-welded joints in high tension bolted joints on the static and fatigue strength. As a results, if it's located inside or outside of the friction surface, the fatigue strength decrease, and the decrease of fatigue strength is greater in cases that the butt-welded joints exist outside of the friction surface. But the influence of butt-welded joint on the fatigue strength satisfies category B of the Specifications.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) instances have been reported in the Alloy 600 reactor pressure vessel head penetration nozzle and the Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal butt weld nozzle in several PWRs. Therefore, in-service inspection programs have been adopted worldwide to prevent failure at the weld region. If a PWSCC is observed at the dissimilar metal weld region during inspection, its structural integrity should be evaluated; however, this requires considerable time and effort, and this might lead to a decrease in the plant utilization coefficient. To prevent this, KHNP-CRI have established integrity assessment criteria and developed a computer program for the fast evaluation and judgment of PWSCC. In this paper, the results and current status of the same are presented. Through this study, criteria for the structural integrity evaluation of PWSCC have been established, and a computer program has been developed to realize technical means for the evaluation of PWSCC structural integrity.

A Study on the Fatigue Characteristics in Butt-Welded Joints with Incomplete Penetration (용입부족을 가진 횡방향 맞대기 용접부의 피로특성에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to examine fatigue behavior of as-welded butt-welded joints with incomplete penetration from fatigue tests. The test results are the following. In static tests, tensile strength and yield strength of butt-welded joints are constant regardless of incomplete penetration. And in fatigue tests, fatigue strength of fully penetrated butt-welded joints satisfies fatigue limits, prescribed in Korean Specifications and JSSC, respectively. The results show that as the magnitude of incomplete penetration increases, fatigue strength decreases. In fractured surfaces, full and incomplete penetration specimen show different shapes, it is because that stress concentration factor vary with structural geometry in bead toe and root tip, and certify in FEM analysis. This study suggests that defects such as incomplete penetration from welding must be avoided in order to attain the sufficient life of steel structures.

  • The incomplete penetration(IP) discontinuity in butt joint weld, which is detected during safety analysis of the steel bridge by nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method, is classified as unacceptable defect according to the NDE codes and standards. In fact, there are a little allowance in butt joint weld in the view point of design criterion, and also detected IP discontinuity should be classified and evaluated for the fatigue strength and residual life estimation. In this study, we performed fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue strength of high strength steel(SWS490A) containing IP discontinuities in various size, the results compared and classified according to the bridge construction standard specification which published by korea administration of construction and traffic. Experimental results could be used to evaluate and estimate the IP discontinuities considering different stress range in butt joint bridge weld during periodic safety inspection.

  • Overlay welding is carried out to improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance on the surface of the chemical plant and steelmaking plant structures. In overlay welding, control of the bead size and the temperature distribution of weldment are particularly important because that is directly connected to the improvement of quality and productivity. The aim of this study is to model the welding heat source that is very useful to analyze the bead size and temperature distribution of weldment. To find the welding heat source model, numerical analyses are performed by using FE software MSC-marc.

Investigation of Fatigue Strength and Prediction of Remaining Life in the Butt Welds Containing Penetration Defects (블완전용입 맞대기 용접재의 용입깊이에 따른 피로강도특성 및 잔류수명의 산출)

  • In this paper fatigue strength reduction of butt weld with penetration defect, which can be seen frequently in the steel bridge, was assessed quantitatively. S-N curves were derived and investigated through the constant amplitude fatigue test of fully or partially penetrated welded specimen made of SWS490 steel. The fracture mechanical method was applied in order to calculate the remaining fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt welds. The fatigue limit of the fully penetrated butt welds was higher than that of category A in AASHTO's fatigue design curves, and the slope of S-N curves with 5.57 was stiffer than that of other result for welded part generally accepted as 3. The fatigue strength of the partially Penetrated butt weld was strongly influenced by the size of lack of penetration, D. It decreased drastically with increasing D from 3.9 to 14.7mm. Fracture behaviour of the partially penetrated butt weld is able to be explained obviously from the beach mark test that a semi-elliptical surface crack with small a/c ratio initiates at a internal weld root and propagates through the weld metal. To estimate the fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt weld with fracture mechanics, stress intensity factors K of 3-dimensional semi-elliptical crack were calculated by appling finite elements method and fracture mechanics parameters such as C and m were derived through the fatigue test of CT-specimen. As a result, the fatigue lives obtained by using the fracture mechanical method agreed well with the experimental results. The results were applied to Sung-Su bridge collapsed due to penetration defects in butt weld of vertical member.

  • We have investigated the traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, including the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516), under various specific circumstances regarding post heat treatment, multilayered welds, and thick or repeated welds for repair. For evaluations, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by micro vickers hardness, tensile, and etching tests the results were compared with those of EPR tests. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW and SAW with the time of heat treatment as the variable, a that was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, and 1280 min. Then, the change in corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. With carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro-hardness gradually increased and decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area also increased gradually. The oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316 and the clad metal showed STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results on multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. The purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations for developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.

  • Currently, high strength steel is not used for steel bridges in Korea, except for the SM570 high strength steel in very isolated cases. The study aimed to promote the active adaptation of high strength steel for long-span steel bridges. Thus, the fatigue behavior of SM570 and POSTEN80 high strength steel was investigated. For the experimental study, the butt welded joints samples were manufactured. Likewise, regular amplitude tensile fatigue tests were conducted. Test results, e.g., location of fatigue cracks and their propagation were compared with the findings of other researchers. After analyzing the effects of fatigue strength, e.g., static tensile strength and plate thickness of base metal, basic data for fatigue design criteria of SM570 and POSTEN80 high strength steel were presented.
