  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of superstructure considering several factors such as change of pile rigidity, soil characteristics, and the constraint condition of support. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Pile-rigidity computed by the rotating deformed plane method is continuously varied up to approximately 5D(D=diameter of pile) below the ground level. This result is consistent with the previous study$^{(12)}$, in which the pile deformation occurs at approximately $3{\sim}6$ times of pile diameter from the ground level. 2. For bridge structure-pile system, analytical results of internal forces and deformations show different values for modified pile rigidity and unchanged pile rigidity. 3. Detaild analysis considering modified pile rigidity is required for the long-span bridge design with structure pile system.

  • In this study, pile load tests have been carried out to develop new P-y curves and then, to investigate the effects of pile rigidities on laterally loaded offshore drilled shafts in Incheon marine clay. This paper consists mainly of two parts: the first part, performance of a series of lateral load tests on small- and full-scale piles under one- and two-way loadings and the second part, comparison between the measured and predicted results by using O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that relatively good agreements in bending moments and lateral displacements were obtained between the measured results using calculated P-y curves and predicted ones by O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. The cases were considered with varying rigidity factors based on pile diameter, length and subgrade soil reaction. Through comparisons, it is found that soil P-y curve influences highly the behavior of flexible pile rather than that of rigid pile.

  • A numerical analysis on the effect of increasing tensile stiffness of the geosynthetics on the soil displacement and pile efficiency was conducted. Parametric studies by changing the stiffness of soft soil, internal friction and dilatancy angles of the embankment material, and flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics were carried out. In general, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics improves the pile efficiency, whereas the amount of its improvement depends on the condition of parameters. In case of the sufficiently low stiffness of the soft soil or high flexual stiffness of the composite layer including the geosynthetics, a noticeable increase in the pile efficiency can be observed. When the stiffness of the soft soil is very low, the increase in the stiffness of the geosynthetics can significantly reduce the vertical displacement in the piled embankment. When the flexual stiffness of the composite layer is sufficiently high, increasing stiffness of the geosynthetics can greatly improve the pile efficiency.

  • A series of model tests was performed to find the characteristics of lateral behavior of single rigid pile. This paper shows the results of model tests on the lateral behavior of single rigid driven pile in non-homogeneous(two layered) Nak-Dong River sands. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, the coefficient ratio of the subgrade reaction and the pile construction conditions(driven & embedded piles) on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. The results of model tests show that the lateral behavior in non-homogeneous soil depends upon drop energy considerably, that is, in the case of H/L=0.75, as the drop energy increases three times the decrease percentage increases about 2.12 times. In the driven pile with non-homogeneous soil of $E_{h1}/E_{h2}=5.56$, the effect of upper layer with large stiffness on the decrease of lateral deflection is remarkably smaller than embedded pile. In non-homogeneous soil, the maximum bending moment of driven pile is in the range of 100 132% in comparison with embedded pile. The reason is that the stiffness of soil around pile increases with drop vibration and so the pile behavior is similar to the flexible pile behavior by means of the increase of relative stiffness of pile, In this paper, the experimental equations for lateral load and H/L on $y_D/y_E \; & \; MBM_D/MBM_E$ are suggested from model tests.

  • In this study, the effect of aspect ratio and soil strength on the skin friction for barrette pile was evaluated using numerical analysis. The back analysis was conducted to obtain the friction coefficient between pile and soil using the experimental results of the static pile load test for the barrette pile installed at OOsite in Busan. A total of 36 simulations for the static pile load test were also conducted with respect to various aspect ratios and soil strengths. It was found that the skin friction increases as the aspect ratio increases and the change in increasing rate was remarkable near the ultimate skin friction. In addition, the effect of aspect ratio on the skin friction was investigated when the strength of soil at pile tip was varied.

  • In this study, the axial stiffness of reinforcing piles (Kvr) for the vertical extension remodeling structures was estimated through 3D finite element analysis. In the computation of the minimum required axial stiffness of reinforcing piles, proposed maximum axial stiffness of old and deteriorated existing piles (Kve) based on theoretical and experimental approaches will be applied. Through this, the required increase rate of axial stiffness of reinforcing piles in order to support the increased structural loading was proposed for end-bearing and friction piles by different slenderness ratio (L/D). The numerical model was validated by comparing the computed results with actual field measurements. Based on the computed results, it was concluded that the end-bearing reinforcing pile needs 44% - 67% increase in axial stiffness to deal with the deterioration of existing piles and support the additional structural load due to vertical extension remodeling.

  • This study presents the application of the numerical and analytical technique to simulate the Load Distribution Ratio (LDR) and to define axial stiffness on reinforcing pile foundation ($K_{vr}$) in vertical extension remodeling structure. The main objective of this study was to investigate the LDR between existing piles and reinforcing piles. Therefore, to analyze the LDR, 3D FEM analysis was performed as variable for elastic modulus, pile end-bearing condition, raft contacts, and relative position of reinforcing pile in a group. Also, using the axial stiffness ($K_{ve}$) of existing piles, the axial stiffness of reinforcing pile was defined by 3D approximate computer-based method, YSPR (Yonsei Piled Raft). In addition $K_{vr}$ was defined by reducing the $K_{ve}$considering the degradation of the existing piles.
