  • Thermal stress analysis of a planar anode-supported SOFC considering electrochemical reactions has been performed under operating conditions where average current density varies from 0 to 2000 $A/m^2$. For the case of the 2000 $A/m^2$ operating condition, Structural stress analysis based on the temperature distributions obtained from the CFD analysis of the unit cell has also been done. From this one way Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis, Maximum Von-Mises stress under negligible temperature gradient fields occurs when cell components are perfectly bonded. The maximum stress of the electrolyte, cathode and anode in a unit cell SOFC is 262.58MPa, 28.55MPa and 15.1MPa respectively. The maximum thermal stress is critically dependent on static friction coefficient.

  • The specimens of two base metals and material friction-welded with hetrogeneous steels of SM40C and STS304 have been prepared and the characteristics of rupture and crack propagation of them have been examined. In the friction-welded material, the width of HAZ is 3.0mm for STS304 and 3.4mm for SM40C. The hardness distribution in HAZ of SM40C is decreased gradually as being getting off interface, but that in HAZ of STS304 is decreased remarkedly and the value of hardness becomes a little lower than that of the base metal in region of 1mm from interface and becomes a little higher than that of the base metal. The tensile strength of the friction-welded material appeared a little lower than that of the base metal and rupture by tensile load is developed in HAZ of STS304 and the position of rupture is at region of low hardness(1mm from interface). The crack propagation rates(da/dN) in both HAZ of the friction-welded material are a little higher than those in both base metals, but the difference are less except for the case of SM45C in low .DELTA. K value. It has been ascertained that the crack in the interface propagates selectively along the HAZ of SM40C and consequently the crack propagation rate is almost similar to that in the HAZ of SM40C.

  • The polymer light emitting diodes (PLED) with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MEH-PPV/Al structure were prepared on ITO(indium tin oxide)/Glass substrates using PEDOT:PSS[poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfolnate)] as the hole transport material and MEH-PPV[poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyhexoxy)-1,4phenylenvinylene)] as emission material layer. The dependences on the surface roughnees and friction coefficient between film layers were investigated as a function of the MEH-PPV concentrations$(0.1\;wt\%\~0.9\;wt\%)$. The RMS values decreased from 1.72 nm to 1.00 nm as the concentration of MEH-PPV increased from $0.1\;wt\%\;to\;0.9\;wt\%$, indicating improvement of surface roughness. In addition, friction coefficients decreased from 0.048 to 0.035, which means the deteriorating of the adhesion condition. The PLED sample with $0.5\;wt\%$ of MEH-PPV showed the maximum luminance of $409\;cd/m^2$.

  • Magnesium alloy has been focussed as lightweight material owing to its high strength even though low density with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction stir welding technique was performed by rotating and plunging a shouldered tool with a small diameter pin into the joint line between two butted plates and useful to join magnesium alloy. In this paper, the experiments of friction stir welding were done to investigate the joint characteristics of AZ31 magnesium alloy. For its evaluation, the orthogonal array method$(L_{27}(3^{13}))$ was applied with four factors of pin diameter, shoulder diameter, travel speed and rotation speed of tool and also three levels of each factor. Nine tools were worked through shoulder diameter of 9, 12, 15mm and pin root diameter of 3, 4, 5mm. In addition tensile tests were excuted for the assessment of mechanical properties for joint conditions. From the results, pin diameter, shoulder diameter, and rotating speed of tool influenced on the tensile strength meaningful, but welding speed did not influence on that by the variance analysis. Beside of that, optimum condition of tensile strength was estimated as following ; shoulder diameter:15mm, welding speed:200mm/min, rotating speed:200rpm.

  • Both the SS41 steel and the M.E.F(martensite encapsulated islands of frrite) dual phase steel made of SS41 steel by heat treatment were welded by friction welding, and then manufactured machinemade Vnotch standard Charpy impact specimens and precracked with a fatigue system at BM(base metal), HAZ(heat affected zone) and WZ(weld interface Zone). The impact test of them was performed with an instrumented impact test machine at a number of temperatures in constant loading velocity and the dynamic fracture characteristics were studied on bases of the absorbed energy, dynamic fracture toughness and fractography from the test. The results obtained are as follows; At the room temperature, the absorbed energy is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM in case of the M.E.F. dual phase steel: BM.geq.HAZ.geq.WZ in case of the SS41 steel, HAZ.geq.BM.geq.WZ at the low temperature. The absorbed energy is decreased markedly with the temperature lowering; it is highly dependent on the temperature. The dynamic fracture toughness of the M.E.F. dual phase steel is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM at the room temperature; BM.geq.WZ.geq.HAZ below-60.deg. C. Therefore the reliability of friction welding is uncertain at the low temperature(below-60.deg. C). The dynamic fracture toughness of the SS41 steel; HZA.geq.WZ.geq.BM at overall temperature region. The flaw formed by rotational upsetting pressure was shown y SEM; in this region. The absorbed energy per unit area and dynamic fracture toughness were low relative to other region.

  • Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

  • Friction stir spot welding between 5454 aluminum alloy sheets with the different thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.0 mm was performed. In the welding process, the tool for welding was rotated ranging from 500 to 2500, and plunged to the depth of 1.8 mm under a constant tool plunge speed of 100 mm/min. And then, the rotating tool was maintained at the plunge depth during the dwell time ranging from 0 to 7 sec. The pull-out speed of the rotating tool was 100 mm/min. The increase of tool rotation speed resulted in the change of the macrostructure of friction-stir-spot-welded zone, especially the geometry of welding interface. The results of the tensile shear test showed that the total displacement and toughness of the welds were increased with the increase of the tool rotation speed, although the maximum tensile shear load was decreased. However, the change in the dwell time at the plunge depth of the tool did not produce the remarkable variation in the macrostructure and mechanical properties of the welds. In all cases, the average hardness in friction-stir-spot-welded zone was higher than that of the base metal zone. By the friction stir spot welding technique, the welds with the excellent mechanical properties than the mechanically-clinched joints could be obtained.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate mechanical properties of the jointed Al6061/HT590 alloys by friction stir welding (FSW). FSW was conducted under the conditions with tool rotating speed of 500 RPM and traveling speed of 300 mm/min., where Ar gas was introduced to prevent the materials from corrosion during the welding process. Electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize microstructures such as grain size, misorientation angle and crystal orientation. Evolution of intermetallic compounds in Al6061 during the process were examined in terms of morphology, size and aspect ratio at three distinct zones Al base material, heat affected zone and stir zone, where transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used. It was revealed that FSW gave rise to refinement of grains as well as growth of intermetallic compounds in Al6061. The morphological changes of intermetallic compounds exerted an influence on mechanical properties, resulting in occurrence of fracture in the part of the base material instead of the jointed parts (heat affected zone and stir zone). This study systematically evaluated the microstructural evolutions during the FSW for joining Al6061 with HT590 and their effect on mechanical properties.

  • Unlike field-welded moment frames damaged during the Northridge earthquake, a column-tree moment frame has a tool to control and reduce its seismic behavior. The tool is the girder splice. Girder splices could be designed to be sufficiently ductile and to have a prescribed bending moment capacity. In such a design, during earthquakes, the girder splices would act as ductile "fuses" and limit the magnitude of forces including the bending moment that could be developed in the frame. In Korea, most moment frames arc composed of a column-tree moment frame. Therefore, the elasto-plastic behavior of steel beams with high strength bolted friction splice should be clarified. Furthermore, structural capacities, including energy absorption capacity, must be quantitatively found. This paper discusses an experimental study to clarify elasto-plastic behavior of steel beams with high strength bolted friction splices. A total of 5 specimens were tested. A specimen was fabricated to have a beam splice designed by a full strength method. Other specimens were fabricated to have beam splices with 75%, 50% and 0% capacities compared with the specimen.
