The onset characteristics of friction-induced noise for a steel plate and 4 metallic pins (Cu, Ni, Al, Mg) were studied through the pin-on-disk machine and the reciprocating testing machine. The results showed that the negative slope of the friction curve was related to the onset time of friction noise. Particularly, Cu was found to be the best metallic material for preventing squeak noise in terms of the onset time and the negative friction slope.
In this paper, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation in soft rock are proposed through the analysis of bi-directional pile load tests of rock socketed drilled shafts performed at large offshore bridge foundations and high-rise building projects (13 test piles in 4 projects). The site investigation and drilling for bi-directional pile load tests were performed at the centers of test piles, and f-w curves for skin friction and q-w curves for end bearing were plotted based on load-transfer measurements. From the above curves, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation depending on the mobilized displacement are determined by multiple regression analysis and compared with previous studies. Since the f-w and q-w curves of rock-socketed piles in Korea show hardening behavior according to mobilized displacement, the developed empirical relations by the mobilized displacement are more reasonable than those of previous studies which could not consider the mobilized displacement and suggested the ultimate capacity with unconfined compressive strength only. Particularly, the developed equations correlated with unconfined compressive strength show the best correlations among the equations correlated with other parameters.
Road design guideline provides the directions on how to design a road alignment based on design speed, and this guideline has a design expectation in that design speed is supposed to be equal to the operating speed of drivers. Horizontal curve design is also based on design speed, and minimum radius is derived based on the drivers comfort while negotiating the curve. However, side friction reflecting drivers comfort is lower than a physical friction measured on wet road surface, therefore, it is reasonable to regard the criterion on minimum radius has a safety margin. Futhermore, the practical preference of choosing the larger radius than minimum leads to a noticeable gap between design speed and operating speed, so links to the violation of design expectation implicated in the guideline. In order to review this assumption, friction and operating speed at rural roads was measured and observed. As the results, a safety margin brought out by the gap between comfort-based friction and measured friction is qualitatively derived. Also, the gap between design speed and operating speed presumably caused by the safety margin and practical preference is analysed. By this, it is suggested that current design guideline should provides not only the minimum radius but also the management of road alignment design to minimize the gap between the design speed and operating speed.
The effectiveness of TiN ion-plating was examined with TiN ion-plated Co-Cr wires(.016“, .016”x.022“) on three different types of bracket(TiN ion-plated metal bracket ceramic bracket and plastic bracket). Maximum static frictional forces and characteristic curves obtained from the frictional characteristic graph, were compared and surface roughness of wires and bracket slots before and after friction experiment was observed by SEM. The obtained results were as follows $\cdot$The frictional forces of TiN ion-plated wires were significantly lower than those of non ion-plated wires(p<0.05). $\cdot$On the effect of wire shape, the frictional forces of round wires were significantly lower than those of rectangular wires(p<0.05) $\cdot$As the result of the SEM observation on the wires and bracket slots after the friction experiment the surface of non ion-plated wires was rougher than that of TiN ion-plated ones. $\cdot$The difference between the static frictional forces and the kinetic frictional forces was not significant in case of the TiN ion-plated round ins, but the static frictional forces were a little higher than the kinetic frictional forces in the TiN ion-plated rectangular wires. $\cdot$The static frictional forces were much higher than the kinetic frictional forces in the case of non ion-plated wires.

Technique for analyzing pile installed by vibratory pile driver was developed and results of analysis obtained from variation of bias weight were studied. It can be seen from load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction that load transfer curve shift to downward as bias weight increases. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic skin friction becomes closer to shape of coil as the bias weight decreases. Magnitudes of toe resistances were not affected by the bias weight. Shape of load transfer curve for dynamic toe resistance shows the similar tendency as the load transfer curve for skin friction exhibits. Vertical displacement increases as the bias weight increases and the shape of vertical displacement with time shows more distinct shape of wave.
Soil-nailing has two main resistance factors: skin friction between ground and grouting; and tension load of reinforced material. These two factors will affect the load-displacement curve when performing soil-nailing pullout tests. The purpose of this paper is to figure out the shear behavior between ground and soil-nailing focusing on the net load-displacement behavior during soil-nailing pullout tests. Firstly, the net load-displacement curve between ground and grouting is estimated theoretically. Then, in-situ pullout load tests are performed on various ground conditions to obtain the load-displacement curve occuring between ground and grouting. Since the measured shear displacement includes elongation of the reinforced material (steel nails), the net load-displacement curve can be obtained by subtracting the elongation magnitude of steels from the measured displacement. It was found that the measured net load-displacement curve matches reasonably well with the theoretically estimated curve.

Entry speed of the vehicle and lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle, roll-angle associated with the overthrow, and then the structure of the road, the friction of road surface are important factors in turning on the curved road. In this study, we analyzed the state change of the vehicle causing entry speed of the vehicle and superelevation of the road, the friction coefficient by using a PC-crash Program for traffic accident reconstruction. As a result, when vehicle is turning the curved road, we could ascertain that the structure of the road and state of the road surface are a major factor about the set up of limited speed.
The shear load distribution and deformation of offshore friction piles are investigated using experimental tests and a numerical analysis. Special attention is given to the soil-pile interaction of axially loaded pile. A framework for determining the f-w curve is proposed based on both theoretical analysis and experimental load test data base. A numerical analysis that takes into account the proposed f-w curves was performed for major parameters on pile-soil interaction such as the pile diameter, the pile length, and the soil condition. Based on the analysis, it is shown that the proposed f-w method is capable of predicting the behavior of a friction pile in deep soft clay. Through comparisons with case histories and finite element results, it is found that the proposed f-w curves are more appropriate and realistic m representing the pile-soil interaction of axially loaded piles in deep soft clay than that of existing f-w method.

A disc spring consists of a conical disc. A load-displacement formula was newly developed in the form of energy method to consider both rigid and friction. The cross section of the disc spring has identical slope angles at the bottom of conical. To solve such a problem, an energy method calculation is proposed. To achieve the goal of this study, the proposed calculation is extended to a disc spring with friction. A firm basis background study based on Almen's work is presented in developing a new numerical approach to predict the available formulation for a disc spring with friction.

The brake squeal propensity due to the friction-velocity curve is numerically investigated. The finite element models for the disc and pad are correlated with the modal test. In the friction-engaged system modeling, the friction function is linearized at the equilibrium. The damping term induced by friction-velocity slope is incorporated into the equations of motion. In the complex eigenvalue analysis, it is found that the pad shear mode is very sensitive to the friction curve. The results shows that the squeal propensity of the pad shear mode can be controlled by the design parameters such as pressure and stiffness.
