  • In this paper, a distributed amplifier is designed using distributed network synthesis that provides the optimum absorption capability of a capacitance. Transfer functions of filters, which consist of the amplifier, are synthesized by a low-pass Chebyshev approximation. Capacitances that a filter network can absorb are calculated as a function of its minimum insertion loss(MIL) and ripple. Active devices in a distributed amplifier are modeled as equivalent circuits by using their S-parameters, and their equivalent capacitances are absorbed into filter structures by properly adjusting the MIL and ripple of a transfer function. As an application example, a distributed amplifier with the gain of about 12.5dB is designed that operates over the frequency range between 0.1 and 7.5GHz. Experimental results prove that distributed network synthesis, which considers capacitance absorption capability, is useful to the design of distributed amplifiers.

  • This article reviews several microwave instruments employed in observation and analysis of tropical cyclones (TCs), typhoon, and hurricanes. Microwave signals are useful for observing tropical cyclones with severe storms since it isn't severely absorbed by the clouds and rain in the storm. The instruments discussed include scatterometers, microwave radiometers, synthetic aperture radars (SARs), and rain radar from space. The date such as winds, rainfall and cloud-distribution in the TCs obtained by microwave instruments provide important informations for forecasting the intensity and path of the typhoon. For example, there're wind-distribution provided by SSM/I which has a wide swath, detailed wind fields from ERS-1, 2 scatterometers and RADARSAT-1 SAR and TRMM's rain radar pro 떠 ding high resolution. Operational satellite instruments lunched recently have improved upon the problems of low resolution and narrow swath indicated at the beginning microwave remote sensing. Understanding and practical using sufficiently about the microwave instruments will serve for searching the features such as generation and development of the TCs.

  • TThe purpose of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of chufa(Cyperus esculentus L., var sativus Boeck) starches by physical and chemical modification. Chufa starches were exposed to the microwave with 700W power oven for 1, 2, and 3 minutes. Also, starch was oxidized with 1.5%, 3% and 6% (15, 30, 60 mg Cl2/g starch $40^{\circ}\C$, pH 10, 3.0 hr) sodium hypochlorite. The shape of starch granules was not changed much by microwave heating and sodium hypochlorite. Water binding capacity increased but amylose content swelling power, and solubility decreased with increasing microwave heating time. Water binding capacity of the oxidized starch decreased with increasing the content of sodium hypochlorite. With increasing the microwave heating time, gelatinization temperature decreased, but enthalpy(${\Delta}H$) increased in physical modification of chufa starches. Also, chemically modified chufa starches have the similar pattern in gelatinization properties. Peak viscosities of RVA in physically modified chufa starches were 416-188 RVU, and in chemically modified chufa starches they were 129-267 RVU.

  • This paper presents a new formulation for transient simulations of microwave propagation in heterogeneous unbounded domains. In particular, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced to allow for wave absorption at artificial boundaries used to truncate the infinite extent of the physical domains. The development of the electromagnetic PML targets the application to engineering mechanics problems such as structural health monitoring and inverse medium problems. To formulate the PML for plane electromagnetic waves, a complex coordinate transformation is introduced to Maxwell's equations in the frequency-domain. Then the PML-endowed partial differential equations(PDEs) for transient electromagnetic waves are recovered by the application of the inverse Fourier transform to the frequency-domain equations. A mixed finite element method is employed to solve the time-domain PDEs for electric and magnetic fields in the PML-truncated domain. Numerical results are presented for plane microwaves propagating through concrete structures, and the accuracy of solutions is investigated by a series of error analyses.

  • In this paper, the authors present a new design for a dual-band metamaterial(MTM) absorber that utilizes resonant-magnetic inclusion of a split-ring resonator(SRR). The proposed MTM unit cell is constructed by two open complementary split-ring resonators(OCSRRs) and an SRR arrangement. To avoid the need for metallic back plate a planar array of SRRs for resonant-magnetic inclusion is placed facing toward the incident wave propagation direction. Each unit cell is printed on the two sides of a FR-4 substrate. A prototype absorber was fabricated with a planar array of $39{\times}39$ unit cells, and measured. The proposed backplane-less absorber can be used for microwave applications.

  • In this paper, the comparison between UPML and Liao's absorbing boundary condition in the FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method was performed for the analysis of the 2D cylindrical coordinate system. Generally, it is known as the absorbing characteristics of the UPML is bro than Liao's absorbing boundary condition in the 2D rectangular coordinate. The simulation results in this paper showed that Liao's original absorbing boundary condition is better than other two absorbing boundary conditions, Liao's modified condition and UPML. We concluded that more numerical, theoretical studies, simulations and verifications for various absorbing boundary conditions will be needed to get more accurate results for the design of useful 2D cylindrical microwave circuits.

  • Plasma-spraying was conducted to produced the microwave absorbing surface films on the alumi-num-alloy used for the fuselage to protect the aircraft against the RADAR detction. The surface films were produced by plasma-splaying the mecharucally mixed composite powders of the silicon carblde and Ni-Zn ferrite. This M /W absorbers were designed experimentally and fabricated trialty, as a result of which the rolative frequency bandwidth of 7.6 to 8.4% were obtained under the tolerance limits of the re-flection coefficients lower than -6dB(absorption ratio 75%), and the maximum absorption thickness becomes 0.5 to 0.5.imm, which Is much thinner than that of the conventional ones.

  • In this paper, we introduce a novel model to analyze the linearity of a TW-EAM (traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator). The device length, microwave loss (ML), and internal reflection (IR) due to impedance mismatch have effect on the linearity of a TW-EAM. The longer devices have characteristics of lower biases with minimum IMDS (intermodulation distortions). ML decreases the output power as well as the IMD value. Internal reflection has different nonlinear characteristics according to the wavelength of the input frequency and the device length. There is little change in SFDR (spurious-free dynamic range) due to ML or IR. As a result, for a 50 GHz band RF-optical communication system, a 0.8 mm-long TW-EAM with the lowest ML would have better properties by using n, which is caused by impedance, mismatch at the output port.

  • The microwave absorption ($P_{tot}$), which is the double integration value of ferromagnetic resonance signal, propositional to the saturation magnetization, and the increase of the $P_{tot}$ measured during the thermal reaction time expect the growth process of the nanoparticles. Therefore, in this work, we measured the $P_{tot}$ in order to obtain the growth time of iron oxide nanoparticles after thermal decomposition of $Fe(acac)_3$ precursor at aging temperature $T_a=273$, 300 and $324^{\circ}C$, respectively. The best condition for monodisperse nanoparticles was obtained at $T_a=300^{\circ}C$, which condition showed the most rapid increase of $P_{tot}$ with thermal reaction time. Finally, the rapid growth rate was necessary condition for the synthesis of iron-oxide monodisperse nanoparticles.
