Effects of Hot-Water Extract of Mulberry Leaf Tea Fermented by Monascus pilosus on Body Weight and Hepatic Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Mouse Fed a Normal Diet (정상식이 마우스의 체중과 간 조직 항산화계 효소활성에 미치는 Monascus pilosus 발효 뽕잎차 열수추출물의 효과)

  • In this study, to evaluate the anti-obesity effects of mulberry leaf tea and its fermented product by Monascus pilosus, we investigated body and organ weight, blood and liver biomarkers in mice fed 1% tea infusions instead of water for 8 weeks. Mice were divided into three groups such as a normal control (NC), unfermented mulberry leaf tea infusion (UMI) and fermented mulberry leaf tea infusion (FMI). Although it is not significant, tea infusion groups showed reduction of body weight gains compared with NC group. Moreover, contents of LDL-cholesterol and lipid peroxide (LPO), altherogenic index, and xanthin oxidase (XO) activity were significantly decreased, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was significantly elevated. The results from this study suggested that UMI and FMI may have an anti-obesity activity, upregulate antioxidant enzymes and reduce levels of oxidants related to liver damage.

  • In retrieving and analyzing digital map information using mouse or key strokes, it needs several times of repeated mouse operation for designating the range of study area. In this study, we proposed a voice activated map information retrieval system for eliminating such repetitions and we realized the system on the personal computer. The system was constructed in two ways - traditional OLE(object linking embedding) method and MFC(Microsoft fundamental class) method in controlling of window display for practical use. In the system performance evaluation, the retrieval data for digital map were consisted of 68 words uttered by 3 male persons which include attribute words and control words for Susung-gu area of Taegu city in a 1:5,000 map. As the results, we obtained the average 98.02% of recognition rate through on-line tests in the office environment and the operating speed of 5.39 seconds by OLE, 10.38 seconds by MFC. These results showed the possibility for practical use of information retrieval system using speech recognition in digital map.

Effects of Perilla frutescens Extract on Anti-allergic Reactions in a Mouse Model (소엽 추출물이 마우스모델에서 항알레르기 반응에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of Perilla frutescens (PF) ethanol extract powder (PF-E30) on the local allergic reaction activated by anti-DNP IgE and the mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions induced by compound 48/80 in a mouse model. One gram of PF powder extracted with 30% ethanol at $80^{\circ}C$ contained 12.3 mg of rosmarinic acid. Oral administration of PF-E30 (0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced plasma histamine levels and inhibited histamine release from peritoneal mast cells in mice activated by compound 48/80 or anti-DNP IgE. Moreover PF-E30 dose-dependently inhibited the production of antigen-induced IgE. These results indicate that the PF ethanol extract inhibits mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions in vivo and in vitro.

Effect of intake of dried mackerel on fatty acid compositions in liver and nervous tissue (건조 고등어 섭취가 마우스의 간 및 신경조직의 지방산 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of feeding dried mackerel as a means of increasing the intake of these n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on fatty acid compositions in liver and nervous tissue. Twenty male mice aged at 4 weeks were fed on the control (5% palm oil, control group) and 5% dried mackerel diets (mackerel group) for four weeks. In fatty acid compositions of liver and cortex, levels of total n-3 fatty acid, specially docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3, DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3, EPA) acids, were increased in the mackerel group compared to the control group, while docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-6, DPAn-6) levels were decreased (p<0.05). In cerebellum and retina, levels of DHA were not significantly different between the control and mackerel groups, but levels of total n-6 fatty acids and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, AA) were decreased in the mackerel group. These results indicated that intake of 5% dried mackerel increased levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in cortex. Thus, we will investigate the relationship between brain function and cortex fatty acid compositions following intake of mackerel by assessing discrimination leaning ability.

Effect of ginger and cinnamon extract mixtures on the growth of intestinal bacteria and intestinal inflammation (생강계피 복합물이 장내 유익균 증식 및 염증조절 기능에 미치는 영향)

  • We aimed to assess the potential growth-promoting effects of ginger and cinnamon mixtures (GCM) on intestinal bacteria and their anti-inflammatory effects in a cellular model of intestinal inflammation. Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus sp., and Lactobacillus acidophilus served as intestinal bacteria. Further, in the inflammatory co-culture model, Caco-2 cells co-cultured with RAW264.7 cells were treated with GCM before the addition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce inflammation in RAW264.7 cells. Addition of GCM to modified Eggerth Gagnon media at a ginger:cinnamon ratio of 1:5 increased the growth of B. longum, Lactobacillus sp., and L. acidophilus compared to that of the control. In a cellular model, compared to LPS-treated groups, GCM-treated groups maintained high transepithelial electrical resistance at ginger:cinnamon ratios of 1:1, 1:3, 1:5, and 1:7 and decreased the tight junction permeability at 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 ratios, similar to that shown by the control groups. In addition, GCM-treated groups showed decreased levels of nitrite at 1:1, 1:5, and 1:7 ginger:cinnamon ratios. Based on these results, it can be concluded that among the various combinations of GCM, the ginger:cinnamon ratio of 1:5 is the optimal composite ratio that shows positive effects on the intestinal beneficial bacteria and in anti-inflammation.

국가 간 감성이미지의 비교 연구 - 색체이미지 척도를 이용한 제품 이미지의 평가 -

  • 특정 제품이 가진 "감성 이미지"란 그 제품의기능과 함께 제품의 감각적 요소 그리고 사용자가 제품에 대해 가진 개념적인 사고 과정의 산물이다. 감성이미지의 국제 비교 연구는 사용자가 특정 제품에 대해 가지고 있는 이미지를 국가나 문화의 맥락 속에서 상호 비교 평가하여, 각 국가나 사회집단을 특팅지울 수 있는 문화적 감성 요소를 추출하고자 하는 것이다. 즉, 각 국가의 생활문화 속에서 사용자들이 제품에 대해 가지는 감성이미지를 계량적으로 규명하고 비교 평가하며, 이 정보를 기초로 각국의 문화와 정서에 적합한 제품 디자인의 모형을 제시하는데 본 연구의 목적이 있다. 구체적인 연구방법은 우선, 자동차 제품을 중심으로 '제품 이미지'를 나타내는 '언어 이미지'스케일을 각 문화 집단 별로 구성한다. 이 제품 이미지에 대비하여, 감성적 요소로 선정된 표준 색채 스케일을 중심으로 나타난 집단의 '이미지'를 상호 비교 평가한다. 이 경우, 각 국가별 집단에서 특징적으로 나타나는 제품의 주요 특성이 감성 이미지로 표현되는 색채 이미지에 어떻게 반영되는가를 상호 비교한다. 이 연구에서는 특정 지역의 사람들이 제품에 적용하는 감성이미지는 색채나 기타 감성 요소에 대한 선호의 문제가 아니라 그 집단의 사람들이 그 제품을 통해 표현하고자 하는 사회적 표상의 반영이라는 것을 보여준다. 따라서, 제품의 이미지가 각 국가별로 공유되는 감성 이미지로 변환되기 위해서는 동일한 의미나 상징성을 지닌 감성 요소를 활용하여 그 제품의 이미지를 포장할 수 있는 방법을 적용하는것이다. 본 연구에서는 각 문화 집단들이 특정 제품에 대해 가지고 있는 사회적 표상(social representation) 체계를 색채스케일에서 나타난 감성 이미지를 통해 구체화하는 것이다.로서는 방전효율의 저하가 없는 양호한 성능을 보였으며, SC의 시범 작동시험을 실차(소나타 1800cc)에 장착하여 수행한 결과 20회 이상의 연속시동에서도 아무런 문제점 없이 잘 동작하였다.되는 데이타를 입력한후 마우스로 원하는 작업의 메뉴를 선택하면 된다. 방법을 타액과 혈청내 testosterone 농도 측정에 응용하여 RIA의 결과와 비교하여 본 바 상관관계가 타액에서 r=0.969, 혈청에서 r=0.990으로 두 결과가 잘 일치하였다. 본 실험에서 측정된 한국인 여성의 타액내 testosterone농도는 107.7$\pm$12.0 pmol/l이었고, 남성의 타액내 농도는 274.2$\pm$22.1 pmol/l이었다. 이상의 결과로 보아 본 연구에서 정립된 EIA 방법은 RIA를 대신하여 소규모의 실험실에서도 활용할 수 있을 것으로 사려된다.또한 상실기 이후 배아에서 합성되며, 발생시기에 따라 그 영향이 다르고 팽창과 부화에 관여하는 것으로 사료된다. 더욱이, 조선의 ${\ulcorner}$구성교육${\lrcorner}$이 조선총독부의 관리하에서 실행되었다는 것을, 당시의 사범학교를 중심으로 한 교육조직을 기술한 문헌에 의해 규명시켰다.nd of letter design which represents -natural objects and was popular at the time of Yukjo Dynasty, and there are some documents of that period left both in Japan and Korea. Neuroprotective Effect of Rice with Phellinus linteus Mycelium in HT22 Cells (상황버섯균사체 쌀의 HT22 신경세포 보호 효과)

  • In this study, the protective effect of rice with Phellinus linteus mycelium (PLMR) against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress was assessed in a mouse hippocampal neuronal HT22 cell line through (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) salt (MTS) assay and western blot. MTS assay using HT22 cells showed that PLMR extract did not affect viability at a concentration range from 1 mg/mL to 5 mg/mL. However, at concentrations over 10 mg/mL, PLMR extract resulted in increased cell death. Cell viability of HT22 was significantly reduced by $H_2O_2$ treatment, and reduction of cell viability was efficiently restored by treatment with PLMR extract in a dose-dependent manner from 0.1 to 1 mg/mL. Cells treated with $H_2O_2$ showed increased expression of Bax, a pro-apoptotic protein, which was down-regulated by treatment with PLMR extract. On the other hand, cells treated with $H_2O_2$ resulted in reduced expression of Bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein, which was restored by treatment with PLMR extract. In addition, treatment with PLMR extract reduced expression of cleaved caspase 3 and PARP, which were up-regulated by $H_2O_2$ treatment. The results may suggest that treatment with PLMR extract would suppress $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis of HT22 cells.

Effect of Occlusal Stabilization Appliance on Driving Distance in Golf (교합안정장치가 전문골프선수들의 드라이버 비거리에 미치는 영향)

  • Many athletes have been using occlusal stabilization appliances to improve their performance. Few studies have examined the benefits of such an appliance in golf. We determined the effect of such appliances on the masticatory muscle activities and driving distances of professional golf players. The appliances were customized for each player and adjusted using a computerized device. The electromyographic muscle activities and driving distances with and without the appliance were measured and compared using the K7 Analyzer and the GolfAchiever II assembly. A paired t-test was used for statistical analysis. The muscle activities of the temporo-frontal and masseter muscles with the appliance were significantly more stable than those without the appliance, and the driving distances with the appliance were significantly different from those without it. Although there were intra-individual differences, professional golf players with temporomandibular disorders showed a greater improvement in performance.

  • Safety is one of the key issue in the regulation of cosmetics. Cosmetic Act deals with it in Korea. The guidance for the testing cosmetic ingredients and their safety evaluation are prepared by Korea Food and Drug Administration. Ultraviolet radiation could Induce skin damage, edema, erythema, photoaging, immune dysfunction and skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation is classified as Group 2A(probably carcinogenic to humans) by International Agenry for Reaserch on Cancer(IARC). The in vitro methodologies for evaluating the toxic potential of ingredients reported in the literature have not yet been sufficiently validated for use in areas other than the study for mutagenicity/genotoxicity, for pre-screening for severe irritancy, for screening of phototoxicity and for evaluating the percutaneous absorption. The 3T3 neutral red uptake photoxicity test (3T3 NRU PT) was accepted as OECD toxicity guideline in 2002. The 3T3 NRU PT is an in vitro method based on a comparison of the cytotoxicitv of a chemical when tested in the presence and in the absence of exposure to a non-cytotoxic dose of UVA/visible light.

Comparative Study of the Biological Activity of Propolis Extracts with Various Countries of Origin as Cosmetic Materials (원산지별 프로폴리스 추출물의 화장품 소재로서의 생리활성 비교연구)

  • Propolis is a sticky resinous substance that is formed by the combination of honeybee secretions and resin of plants, which serves to protect from bacteria and viruses. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of propolis extract from Korea (KPE), China (CPE), and Brazil (BPE) through antioxidant, antibacterial, whitening, and anti-inflammatory tests, and to examine their potential as cosmetic materials. KPE, CPE, and BPE showed significant antioxidant activities on flavonoid/polyphenol content and free radical scavenging activity. The antibacterial effect of propolis on skin flora was determined by measuring the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). KPE showed better antibacterial efficacy than CPE and BPE in C. acnes (KPE, CPE, and BPE: (62.5, 250, and 500) ㎍/mL, respectively). Furthermore, KPE inhibited the melanin synthesis in human epidermal melanocytes and production of nitric oxide and PGE2 induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mouse macrophages, which showed better than did CPE or BPE. Taken together, the propolis extracts can be applied to antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory ingredient for cosmetics, while KPE showed superior potential in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and whitening efficacies.
