The one of the methods which academic libraries maximize the user service is to perform the 'liaison' service that embodies the customized service to make close linkage with library and users. The purpose of this study is to propose the operational plan of 'liaison' service at academic libraries. It was explored the necessity of liaison service, the definition and role of liaison librarian. After this study examined the case of activities and duties of liaison librarian at Korean and foreign academic libraries, the operational plan such as organization, administration and steps et al. of 'liaison' service were proposed.

The purpose of this study is to develop a model of a liaison training program for academic librarians in Korea. The liaison training program model has been developed based upon the literature review and surveys about liaison training practices in foreign countries Expert interviews and case analyses were conducted to demonstrated its feasibility and applicability. This study found that this model identifies core competencies of academic liaison librarians and it helped developing guidelines by the level of each task: basic and advanced exercises, references, and worksheets.

Among university librarians and academic community in Korea, there has been constant debate on the need for subject librarianship and the restructuring of educational programs. The debate has not resulted in substantive change so far. Recently, as several university libraries have begun to implement subject librarian service, there is a growing need to reeducate practicing librarians for such service. Recognizing that the liaison service model best fits the reality of academic libraries, this article proposes curriculum development goals and strategies, and specific course listings for the training of subject liaison librarians. We also suggest specific conditions requisite for such education programs fully develop in the future.

A job analysis of subject specialist librarians is an important source providing information about definition of a job, development of a curriculum, administration of human resources, criteria of employee training, and deciding institutional and individual objectives. This study analyzes a job of subject specialist librarians in Korea, and divides their jobs into 7 duties and 58 tasks. the 7 duties are as follows; A. a development of subject information resources, B. a management of information resources classified by subjects, C. a research support service classified by subjects, D. Liasion activity of library users, E. an education of subject classification for library users, F. library management, G. personal development of classified subject areas.

Aims of subject specialist librarian's education is an improvement of their professionalism which could reinforce librarians' ability to achieve their speciality. The curriculum should be competency based one which could gain knowledge and skills to accomplish subject librarian services. The study aims to suggest competency based curriculum that is needed for specialist librarian's work. The study proposes six educational courses and fifteen subjects. Six courses are as followings: resource development, information services, library marketing, user education, subject research, and library administration.

Offering subject-oriented services by subject experts is an effective method of enhancing the quality of digital reference services in university libraries. However, it is not easy to implement due to the Korean librarian education system and a shortage of human resources. Thus, as an alternative, we proposed an SDI (selective dissemination of information) profiler system using the concept of a profiler which is used in crime psychology as a specialist who studies a person's behavior for clues to psychology to aid in capturing them, under the assumption that conducting SDI services is one of the subject experts' key roles. And we also mentioned the procedures and methods of how to apply it to the reference services of university libraries. The proposed SDI profiler system can change the roles of university librarians from passive to active. Furthermore, it also allows librarians to provide their clients with customized SDI services, thus improving reference services.
