Stimulus Tester : Educational Learning Improvement System for IPTV Education and Entertainment Contents (IPTV의 교육 및 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠를 위한 교육 학습 반응 시스템 (Stimulus Tester) 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to help IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) commercialization using newly produced educational contents in the area of entertainment and education which currently popular in the market. It is called, Stimulus $Tester^{TM}$, endow reaction time from the feedback of learning system, using a non-direct method, for example, a remote controller. Reaction time is the learning efficiency promotion mechanism that learner ascertain the learning condition of oneself by the time with solved questions from the solving the question in given time. Reaction time also play a key role that the learner may go through course which distribute the point to PC from Server. If this system is ready, we expect that the educational industry will gradually spread out. To verify the learning efficiency of this system, we concluded that the learning improvements, by an Internet-based and a paper-based test, of the increase by 51%, from 2.47min to 1.27min, during reaction of 7 days.

Development of Android Startup Program and Power Synchronous Algorithm for IPTV Set-Top Box (안드로이드 시작프로그램과 IPTV-셋톱박스의 전원 동기화 알고리즘 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we have developed an app that can control IPTV - Miracast and the Internet with Android 7.0 on the embedded board. The app can be controlled by the remote control of IPTV and can receive TV when using IPTV. And Miracast and Embedded board are put into the power saving mode. When one mode is selected in this way, the other two modes enter the power saving mode and the power saving control technology is applied to reduce energy consumption. The board used in this paper was Android version 7.1.2 version of Raspberry pie 3B / B + and Asus Tinker board s, and Android Studio program was used to make the app and a synchronization control program was also developed to operate with IPTV remote control. The operation of the Android start program using the power saving power control technology and the remote control synchronization control program developed in this way is confirmed to be normal operation as a result of applying to the actual IPTV.

Dynamic Popular Channel Surfing Scheme for Reducing the Channel Seek Distance in DTV (DTV에서 채널 탐색 거리를 줄이기 위한 선호 채널 동적 배치 방법)

  • Due to the increasing availability and popularity of digital television (DTV), the numbers of TV channels and programs that can be selected by consumers are also increasing rapidly. Therefore, searching for interesting channels and program via remote controls or channel guide maps can be frustrating and slow. In this paper, in order to better satisfy consumers, we propose a dynamic channel surfing scheme that reduces the channel seek distance in DTV. The proposed scheme dynamically rearranges the channel sequences according to the channel currently being watched to reduce the channel seek distance. The results of a simulation experiment demonstrate that the proposed dynamic channel surfing scheme reduces the channel seek distance for DTV channel navigation when up-down channel selection interfaces are used.

A Method for Describing the Information of the Broadcasting Program's Time-Slots and Its Application to a Data Service (방송프로그램의 구간 별 부가정보 기술 방법과 이를 활용한 데이터서비스 개발 사례)

  • Although the data service of the digital broadcasting has been regarded as the representative service of the broadcasting and communication convergence, it, however, has failed to gain the popularity with the viewers due to the viewer's viewing modality of focusing only on the TV programs. Based on the experts' opinions that the data service should step up so that using a data service while watching a TV program creates a synergy effect, the paper proposes a method for allowing a data service to utilize the information of a TV program. The method has a tool for describing the information of a TV program's content, which changes as time goes on and provides a mechanism for transmitting the information in the way compatible to the digital broadcasting standard. As an application of the method, with a domestic data service developing company, we have developed a ticker data service that shows the information (e.g., actors, places, sponsors, etc.) of a drama.

Design of wideband microstrip monopole slot antenna (광대역 마이크로스트립 모노폴 슬롯안테나의 설계)

  • In the present study, wideband microstrip monopole slot antennas which can be applied to the RF4CE Zigbee remote controller are designed. First I-shaped monopole slot antenna which has ${\lambda}g/4$ length at 2.45GHz is designed. In particular, a conducting via is used to connect the microstrip feed line and the ground plane surrounded with the etched slot for the bandwidth improvement. In order to reduce the antenna size, it is changed into L-shaped and T-shaped monopole slot antennas for which improve results of antenna performance are observed. In case of T-shaped monopole slot antenna, impedance bandwidth(VSWR<2) is about 3.32GHz, and also its radiation efficiency and gain is more than 90% and 2.1dBi respectively at whole operating frequency range. In particular, all of proposed monopole slot antennas have the end-fire radiations which has a maximum radiation power toward direction of open ends of monopole slots.

Multi-touch Recognition and Tracking for Self Capacitive TSP (자기정전용량 방식의 TSP에서 멀티터치 인식 및 추적)

  • This paper introduces a multi-touch recognition and tracking method for self capacitive TSP(Touch Screen Pannel). Self capacitive TSP recognizes finger touches by sensing capacitive change of ITO transparent conducting film arranged by rows and columns on the TSP pannel. They have some advantages such as high SNR, fast sensing, and simple touch processing, but have very difficulties for multi-touch processing. This disadvantage makes that the mutual capacitive TSPs, which have no such disadvantage, have been more widely used especially for multi-touch applications. However, since the other applications for remote control pad or recently developed wearable devises have only restrictive requirements for multi-touch, the disadvantage of self capacitive TSP is not a critical problem. In this paper, we first describe multi-touch recognition problems in self capacitive TSP and then propose how to overcome those problems and a tracking method of two touches when they are moving. Experimental results of our method showed that our algorithm works well in two touches.

  • An intelligent home network system using low-power and low-cost sensor nodes was designed and implemented. In Intelligent Home Network System, active home appliances control is composed of RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) based user indoor location tracking, dynamic multi-hop routing, and learning integration remote-control. Through the remote-control learning, home appliances can be controlled in wireless network environment. User location information for intelligent service is calculated using RSSI based Triangle measurement method, and then the received location information is passed to Smoothing Algorithm to reduce error rate. In order to service Intelligent Home Network, moreover, the sensor node is designed to be held by user. The gathered user data is transmitted through dynamic multi-hop routing to server, and real-time user location & environment information are displayed on monitoring program.

  • Recently, vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques have been developed for assisting elderly and disabled people to control home appliances. Frequently occurred problems which lower the hand gesture recognition rate are due to the inter-person variation and intra-person variation. The recognition difficulty caused by inter-person variation can be handled by using user dependent model and model selection technique. And the recognition difficulty caused by intra-person variation can be handled by using fuzzy logic. In this paper, we propose multivariate fuzzy decision tree learning and classification method for a hand motion recognition system for multiple users. When a user starts to use the system, the most appropriate recognition model is selected and used for the user.

Design of a Background Image Based Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Pointing Device (배경영상 기반 다자유도 포인팅 디바이스의 설계)

  • As interactive multimedia have come into wide use, user interfaces such as remote controllers or classical computer mice have several limitations that cause inconvenience. We propose a vision-based pointing device to resolve this problem. We analyzed the moving image from the camera which is embedded in the pointing device and estimate the movement of the device. The pose of the cursor can be determined from this result. To process in the real time, we used the low resolution of $288{\times}208$ pixel camera and comer points of the screen were tracked using local optical flow method. The distance from screen and device was calculated from the size of screen in the image. The proposed device has simple configurations, low cost, easy use, and intuitive handhold operation like traditional mice. Moreover it shows reliable performance even in the dark condition.

Study on Improving Energy-Efficiency of Set-top Box (셋톱박스의 에너지 효율 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Set-top Box which receives broadcasting signal and delivers it to display device such as TV usually doesn't have low-power mode, standby power mode. On the other side, most consumer electronics support standby power mode. The main reasons come from technical barriers and operational stability. Set-top box normally consumes 80~90% power of active mode even though turning off. This is much higher compared to other consumer electronics which consume less than 1W in standby power mode. However, most developed countries including Korea are enforcing the regulations which enhance energy efficiency of set-top box. This paper describes design and development of low-power set-top box. Key technologies are SoC supporting low-power mode, system hardware and software operating in separated power mode, and middleware managing the power with broadcasting system. Finally, we show energy saving expectation through development and proliferation.
