To find out proper harvest time and to select a variety having high yield and good quality, growth characteristics and contents of rosmarinic acid and essential oil were investigated according to harvest time of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze collected in Korea. Only the number of flower cluster per plant among growth characteristics of 7 collections showed not significant difference. The range of dry matter weight of above-ground part used as crude drug was $666{\sim} 1328kg/10a$ and the weight of flower cluster and root was not significant among the plant parts of collections. Dry matter weight of top was the highest on Sep. 20, full-bloom stage. Rosmarinic acid contents among in 7 collections showed significant difference and the range were $0.32{\sim}2.34%$ in flower, $0.97{\sim}1.64%$ in leaf, $0.03{\sim}0.21%$ in stem and $0.91{\sim}6.56%$ in root. The contents of rosmarinic acid and essential oil in leaf was 3.76%, 5.78% before flowering and 1.55%, 4.28% after flowering respectively. The total content of rosmarinic acid of all plant parts was decreased after flowering but that of essential oil was increased after flowering.
The liquid crystal form with phosphatidylcholine contents containing in the hydrogenated lecithin was confirmed. Composition ingredients of the liquid crystal vesicle were phospholipid, ethanol and water and the rosmarinic acid was encapsulated as index material. The mean particle size of the liquid crystal vesicle appeared to form various particles form 480 nm to $3{\mu}m$ depending upon the lipid composition and ultrasonic handling time. The liquid crystal vesicle compared with the liposome showed a very high encapsulation efficiency. The quantity of liquid crystal vesicle increased with respect to the increased quantity of lipid contents in the hydrogenated lecithin. The result from release experiments of the liquid crystal vesicle containing rosmarinic acid showed that the liquid crystal vesicle releases much less than that of liposome.

Objectives : This study presents a high performance liquid chromatography methods for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of rosmarinic acid (RA) and caffeic acid (CA) in Perilla frutescens var. japonica and var. acuta. Methods : Chromatographic separation was performed using a mixture of methanol, water and formic acid (35 : 64.2 : 0.8) with a reversed-phase column (Gemini C18, 4.6 ${\times}$ 150 mm, 3 ${\mu}m$). The analyses were detected at UV (280 nm). Results : The samples were extracted with 50% EtOH under reflux for 1 h, and simultaneous determination for RA and CA in hyang-so-san and haeng-so-san was possible without interference peaks Conclusions : According the results, we developed a determination method for RA and CA in Perillae Folium. Owing to Perilla frutescens var. japonica and var. acuta did not show significant difference in contents of RA and CA, both Perilla frutescens could be available as herbal medicine.
We investigated the effect of Perilla frutescens (PF) ethanol extract powder (PF-E30) on the local allergic reaction activated by anti-DNP IgE and the mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions induced by compound 48/80 in a mouse model. One gram of PF powder extracted with 30% ethanol at $80^{\circ}C$ contained 12.3 mg of rosmarinic acid. Oral administration of PF-E30 (0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced plasma histamine levels and inhibited histamine release from peritoneal mast cells in mice activated by compound 48/80 or anti-DNP IgE. Moreover PF-E30 dose-dependently inhibited the production of antigen-induced IgE. These results indicate that the PF ethanol extract inhibits mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions in vivo and in vitro.

The present study investigated the quality characteristics of Perilla frutescens Britt. seed compounds according to the cultivar and sowing dates. In the present experiment, five Perilla cultivars, namely 'Dayu', 'Deulsaem', 'Deulhyang', 'Baekjin', 'Sodam', were planted on three different dates, including May 30, June 20, and July 10. The contents of key compounds and phenols varied depending on the cultivar and sowing date. With the delayed sowing time, the days to flowering and maturity of the culitvar decreased, while the seed weight and hardness increased. Crude protein content increased but crude lipid content decreased with the delay in the sowing time. However, there was no interaction of different sowing dates with the fatty acid content, which remained stable compared with the other values. Overall, the total polyphenol content was higher in Perilla seeds sown on May 30.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light quality using either monochromatic or combined LEDs on the growth and antioxidant accumulation of Agastache rugosa cultivated under hydroponics for 4 weeks. This experiment was performed in a controlled-environment room at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $18{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ (day and night temperatures, respectively) and 50-70% relative humidity, with a provided photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of $180{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and irradiated with either monochromatic (W10 and R10) or mixed LEDs (W2B1G1, R3B1, R2B1G1, and W2B1G1) with a differing ratio of each LED's PPFD and fluorescent lighting (FL: control) with a 16/8 h photoperiod. Fresh and dry weights were highest for plants grown under the W2B1G1 treatment. A. rugosa grown with R10 had the greatest plant height but the lowest SPAD among all treatments. The concentration of rosmarinic acid in plants grown under W2B1G1 was significantly higher than that of plants grown under other treatments. Tilianin content was significantly higher in R3B1 than in the other treatments. However, whole-plant rosmarinic acid and tilianin content was the highest under the W2B1G1 condition. To cultivate A. rugosa in a plant factory, mixed-LED light conditions with W2B1G1 is considered to be more advantageous for the growth and antioxidant accumulation of A. rugosa. It is though that the total whole-plant antioxidant content is more crucial for commercial use; the present study demonstrates the potential to achieve higher content of functional materials in plants through the selection of light quality.

This study attempted to establish an HPLC analysis method for determination of marker compounds as a part of material standardization for the development of health functional food materials from Perilla frutescens Britton var. acuta Kudo. The quantitative determination method of rosmarinic acid as a marker compound of P. frutescens Britton var. acuta Kudo extract (PFE) was optimized by HPLC analysis using a C18 column ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$) with 0.1% acetic acid as the elution gradient and methanol as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1 mL/min and detection wavelength of 280 nm. The HPLC/UV method was applied successfully to quantification of the marker compound in PFE after validation of the method with linearity, accuracy, and precision. The method showed high linearity in the calibration curve at a coefficient of correlation ($R^2$) of 0.9995, and the limit of detection and limit of quantitation were $0.36{\mu}g/mL$ and $1.2{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Relative standard deviation (RSD) values of data from intra- and inter-day precision were less than 3.21% and 1.43%, respectively. Recovery rate test at rosmarinic acid concentrations of 12.5, 25 and $50{\mu}g/mL$ scored between 97.04~98.98% with RSD values from 0.25~1.97%. These results indicate that the established HPLC method is very useful for the determination of marker compound in PFE to develop a health functional material.
