The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to degradation and to compare the wear resistance characteristics of four composite resins in an alkaline solution. The resistance to degradation was evaluated on the basis of mass loss(%), degradation depth(${\mu}m$), Si loss(ppm) and wear depth. The brands studied were Heliomolar flow, Filtek supreme, Point4, Tetric flow. The results were as follows: 1. The sequence of the mass loss was in descending order by Heliomolar flow, Filtek supreme, Point4, Tetric flow. There was significant differences among the materials except Heliomolar flow and Filtek supreme. 2. The sequence of the degree of degradation layer depth was in descending order by Filtek supreme, Heliomolar flow, Tetric flow, Point4. There were significant differences among the materials except Heliomolar flow and Tetric flow. 3. The sequence of Si loss was in descending order by Filtek supreme, Heliomolar flow, Point4, Tetric flow. There were significant differences among the materials except Point 4 and Tetric flow. 4. The sequence of maximum wear depth was in descending order by Heliomolar flow, Point4, Fillet supreme, Tetric flow and there was increasing wear depth on soaking in 0.1N NaOH solution. 5. When observed with SEM, destruction of bonding between matrix and filler was observed and when observed with CLSM, the depth of degradation layer of specimen surface was observed. There results indicate that wear and hydrolytic degradation could be considered to be evaluation factors of composite resins.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface characteristics of composite resins polished with two different polishing methods. 30 disk-shaped specimens were prepared with microhybrid (Filtek$^{TM}$ Z250) and nanofilled (Filtek$^{TM}$ Z350) resins respectively, and classified into three groups: not polished as controls, polished by an abrasive disk (Soflex), and polished by a polishing brush (Occlubrush). Surface roughness was increased after polishing. In terms of micro-roughness, there were no significant differences between the two polishing methods. But macro-roughness values were markedly increased in the Occlubrush group (p < 0.05). In the Sof-lex group, the matrix and fillers were polished together, resulting into a smoother and homogeneous surface. However, in the Occlubrush group, the matrix layer was torn off, with more heterogeneous surfaces and large scratches. In regards to micro-hardness, no significant differences were observed between the two polishing systems (p > 0.05). And the hardness value increased about 25% after polishing. In conclusion, the method of polishing should be chosen deliberately in view of the hardness characteristics of composite resins. Sof-lex is recommended to improve the surface characteristics of polished resins.
"Residual stress" can be developed during polymerization of the dental composite and it can be remained after this process was completed. The total amount of the force which applied to the composite restoration can be calculated by the sum of external and internal force. For the complete understanding of the restoration failure behavior. these two factors should be considered. In this experiment. I compared the residual stress of the recently developed nanofilled dental composite by ring slitting methods. The composites used in this study can be categorized in two groups. one is microhybrid type-Z250, as control group, and nanofilled type-Grandio, Filtek Supreme. Ceram-X, as experimental ones. Composite ring was made and marked two reference points on the surface. Then measure the change of the distance between these two points before and after ring slitting. From the distance change, average circumferential residual stress $({\sigma}{\theta})$ was calculated. In 10 minutes and 1 hour measurement groups, Filtek Supreme showed higher residual stress than Z250 and Ceram-X. In 24 hour group, Filtek showed higher stress than the other groups. Following the result of this experiment, nanofilled composite showed similar or higher residual stress than Z250, and when comparing the Z250 and Filtek Supreme, which have quite similar matrix components. Filtek Supreme groups showed higher residual stress.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a new resin monomer, filler size and polishing technique on the surface roughness of composite resin restorations using confocal laser scanning microscopy. By adding new methoxylated Bis-GMA (Bis-M-GMA, 2,2-bis[4-(2-methoxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) having low viscosity, the content of TEGDMA might be decreased. Three experimental composite resins were made: EX1 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 40 nm nanofillers); EX2 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 20 nm nanofillers); EX3 (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA = 70/30 wt%, 40 nm nanofillers). Filtek Z250 was used as a reference. Nine specimens (6 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) for each experimental composite resin and Filtek Z250 were fabricated in a teflon mold and assigned to three groups. In Mylar strip group, specimens were left undisturbed. In Sof-lex group, specimens were ground with #1000 SiC paper and polished with Sof-lex discs. In DiaPolisher group, specimens were ground with #1000 SiC paper and polished with DiaPolisher polishing points. The Ra (Average roughness), Rq (Root mean square roughness), Rv (Valley roughness), Rp (Peak roughness), Rc (2D roughness) and Sc (3D roughness) values were determined using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The data were statistically analyzed by Two-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparisons test (p = 0.05). The type of composite resin and polishing technique significantly affected the surface roughness of the composite resin restorations (p < 0.001). EX3 showed the smoothest surface compared to the other composite resins (p < 0.05). Mylar strip resulted in smoother surface than other polishing techniques (p < 0.05). Bis-M-GMA. a new resin monomer having low viscosity, might reduce the amount of diluent, but showed adverse effect on the surface roughness of composite resin restorations.
The resin matrix in the dental composite is generally composed of 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA) as a base resin and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a diluent for the reduction of viscosity. The applications of dental composite were often limited in dentistry due to the relatively large amounts of volumetric shrinkage during polymerization and water uptake caused by the addition of TEGDMA to the resin matrix. In this study, in order to solve problems stemmed from the TEGDMA by reducing amount of diluent added to resin matrix, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were explored as new diluents. A decrease in the volumetric shrinkage and an increase in the mechanical strength were observed by replacing TEGDMA in the dental composite to DEGDMA (or EGDMA). Reduction in the mechanical strength of the dental composite containing DEGDMA (or EGDMA), was not serious in comparison with that of the dental composite containing TEGDMA after water uptake.

The composite restorative resins have their insufficient resistance to wear. The subsurface degradation within the restoration is considered to be associated with wear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to degradation of six commercial composite resins in an alkaline solution. The brands studied were Clearfil APX(Kuraray), Heliomolar(Vivadent), Surefil(Dentsply), TPH(Dentsply), Tetric Ceram(Vivadent), and Z100(3M). Preweighed discs of each brand were exposed 0.1N NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$. After 14 days they were removed, neutralized with HCL, washed with water and dried to constant mass at $60^{\circ}C$. Resistance to degradation was evaluated on the basis of the following parameters: (a) mass loss(%) - determined from pre-and post-exposure specimen weights; (b) Si loss (ppm)-obtained from ICP-AE analysis of solution exposed to specimens; and (c) degradation depth$({\mu}m)$ - measured microscopically (SEM) from polished circular sections of exposed specimens. The results were as follows: 1. The mass loss was in descending order by Z100, TC H, S, CL, TPH and in the range of $0.45\sim3.64%$ 2. The degradation layer depth was in descending order by H, Z100, S, TC, TPH, CL and in the range of $10.85\sim73.38{\mu}m$ 3. For the Si concentration, Z100 was the highest of all 4. The highly significant correlation(r=0.81, p<0.05) was observed between mass loss and degradation depth. 5. Under scanning electronmicroscopy, the degradation of connection between resin matrix and fillers was observed 2 weeks after soaking in NaOH solution.

The degree of conversion of cross-linked polymer has great importance in determining the physical and mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. Therefore, this study examined the comparison of light-cured composite resin polymerization of various light-curing systems composed of plasma arc, halogen, LED curing units and pluse-delay curing with FTIR. From this experiment, The following results were obtained : 1. From FTIR, the degree of conversion(DC) of composite resin was 34.52-49.31%, DC of composite resin used in Flipo was $39.36{\pm}1.22%$, CrediII $45.64{\pm}1.34%$, XL3000 $43.48{\pm}1.34%$, VIP(mode 4) $44.31{\pm}0.72%$, LUXOMAX $49.31{\pm}2.37%$, Elipar Freelight $44.51{\pm}0.62%$ and $34.52{\pm}0.85%$ in pulse-delay curing. 2. The degree of conversion of composite resin in each light-curing unit was highest DC of the LUXOMAX system, lowest DC of the pulse-delay curing. 3. Compared with other curing system, Flipo, LUXOMAX, and pulse-delay curing were significant difference(p<0.05). 4. In same curing method group, the differences of each light-curing unit were no significace in halogen(conventional) curing method(p>0.05), but significance in plasma arc curing and LED curing method(p<0.05).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to degradation of four commercial composite resins in an alkaline solution. The brands studied were Charisma, Filtek P 60, Palpique Estelite, and Spectrum. Preweighed discs of each brand were exposed to 0.1N NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$. After 2 weeks they were removed, neutralized with HCl, washed with water and dried. Resistance to degradation was evaluated on the basis of following parameters: (a) mass loss(%) - determined from pre-and post-exposed specimen weights; (b) Si loss(ppm) - obtained from ICP-AE analysis of solution exposed to specimens; and (c) degradation depth(${\mu}m$) - measured SEM and CLSM from polished circular sections of exposed specimens. The results were as follows: 1. The sequence of mass loss was in descending order by Palpique Estelite, Filtek P 60, Charisma, and Spectrum. 2. The sequence of the degree of degradation layer depth was in descending order by Filtek P 60, Charisma, Palpique Estelita, and Spectrum. 3. The sequence of the Si loss was in descending order by Chrisma, Spectrum, Palpique Estelite, and Filtek P 60. 4. The correlation coefficient between mass loss and degradation layer depth was relatively high(r=0.704, p<0.05). 5. When observed with SEM, destruction of bonding was observed between resin matrix and filler. 6. When observed with CLSM, degradation layer depth of composite resin surface was observed.
The consumption of beverages among children is rising. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of kid's drink on dental resin-based pit and fissure sealant. Pororo, I-kicker, Sunkist kids were included in the experimental groups, and Samdasu was included in the control group. A conventional dental sealant material ($Clinpro^{TM}Sealant^{(R)}$) was selected for this study. Resin specimens (8 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness) were prepared according to manufacturers' instructions and the initial roughness (Ra) was then measured. The pH of all the four groups was measured using a pH meter. The specimens were individually immersed in 5 ml of the experimental solutions and stored at $37^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours. Following this, the surface roughness of the resin specimens was measured by Surftest. The concentration of residual monomer released was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The surface morphology of the resin specimen was evaluated before and after storage by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Duncan's test. The results showed that all the children's beverages examined in this study contained citric acid. The pH of I-kicker was the lowest ($3.03{\pm}0.01$), followed by that of Sunkist kids ($3.26{\pm}0.02$) and Pororo ($3.47{\pm}0.02$). We observed an increase in the surface roughness of resin specimens after 72 h of immersion in all the beverages tested (p<0.05). There was matrix degradation after immersion, visualized on SEM image, in all the beverage groups. Bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate was not detected after 72 hours, but triethylene glycol dimethacrylate levels were increased in all the beverages tested during the 72 hours by HPLC. These results suggest that intake of beverages containing acid can cause degradation of the resin-based pit and fissure sealants in children.

This study investigated the colors and mechanical properties of layered dental composites. Four nanocomposite resins (Aelite LS, Grandio, Tetric EvoCeram, Filtek Z350XT) and a silorane-based composite resin (P90) were used for overlying and underlying materials, respectively, with different thickness combinations. Colors, translucency parameter (TP), flexural and compressive properties were evaluated. All tested specimens had different color coordinates, although all were of A3 shade. Color coordinates and TP values of layered specimens better matched those of the corresponding overlying product as the thickness of the overlying product was increased. High TP values were related with high $b^*$ value differences between specimens (p<0.05). Both flexural strength and modulus, compressive strength and modulus of layered specimens with different thickness combinations were mostly lower than those of the corresponding overlying products, respectively, in their non-layered state.
