  • Ozone tolerance of tree species was determined by standard index of physiological damages and biochemical defense responses under short-term ozone exposure. At the end of 150ppb $O_3$ fumigation, photosynthetic characteristics and antioxidative enzyme activities were analyzed in the leaves of five species(Koelreuteria paniculata, Firmiana simplex, Styrax japonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Viburnum sargentii). Injury index was determined by the effect of ozone on photosynthetic parameters and malondialdehyde(MDA) content, and tolerance index was calculated using the rate of increase in superoxide dismutase(SOD), ascorbate-peroxidase(APX), glutathione reductase(GR) and catalase(CAT) activities. Apparent quantum yield(AQY), carboxylation efficiency(Ce) and photo-respiration rate(PR) decreased in the leaves of five species with increasing ozone exposure time. These parameters were considered as an appropriate indicator for stress evaluation. Antioxidative enzyme activities showed various results depending on the tree species, exposure time, and enzyme types. SOD activity of K. paniculata increased with ozone exposure time, and that of F. rhynchophylla increased only after 6 hours of ozone exposure. CAT activity of $O_3$-exposed F. simplex was lower than the control. Based on standard index, ozone tolerance ability of five species was determined as two tolerant species(F. rhynchophylla > K. paniculata) and three sensitive species(S. japonica > F. simplex > V. sargentii).

  • This study analyzed the changes in vegetation structure of Quercus mongolica communities, Pinus densiflora communities, Robinia pseudo-acacia communities and Pinus rigida communities for the last 11 years$(1994{\sim}2005)$ to provide basic data for ecological restoration. We studied the vegetation structure of four communities within a plot$(unit:\;1,200m^2)$) and concluded that Canopy Layer continuously preserved and expanded existing superior species, Understory Layer grew Styrax japonica which is highly adaptive to urban environment, and Shrub Layer grew more Stephanandra incise. An analysis on species diversity indicated that Quercus mongolica communities$(1.0921{\rightarrow}1.0381{\rightarrow}1.0633)$, Pin us densiflora communities$(0.7071{\rightarrow}0.8553{\rightarrow}1.0164)$, and Robinia pseudo-acacia communities$(0.9255{\rightarrow}0.8392{\rightarrow}0.8721)$ sharply decreased in 1998 and are gradually increasing these days. Also, Pinus rigida communities decreased from 0.9008 in 1998 to 0.8850 in 2005. Fluctuation in numbers of species and trees were similar. Acidity of soil was $4.34{\sim}5.31$ and improved compared to 20 years ago.

  • JC Raulston Arboretum of the North Carolina State University houses 113 species of Korean native landscape woody plants. Styrax japonicus 'Emerald Pagoda'[formerly 'Sohuksan'] is native to Korea, China, and Japan. 'Emerald pagoda' is a special cultivar found by DR. J.C. Raulston during the United States National Arboretum plant collection expedition of the island of Sohuksan at the Western end of the Korea in 1985. Incredible, thick, glossy, large-leafed form of this beautiful white flowering tree found in Korea in 1985. It was probably the most outstanding ornamental plant to come from the expedition after his trip to Sohuksan and Chindo in the harsh perilous islands of the coast of Korea. He brought this one back in his suitcase. Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' is and evergreen broadleaf shrub. It is for screening and as fire resistant trees in the southern region of Korea, because of its compact, leathery leaves. 'Chindo' was discovered on the island of Chindo by the U.S. National arboretum plant exploration team including J.C. Raulston during its 1985 Korean trip. Cuttings were taken from this plant, and liners were produced over subsequent years. These liners are now being evaluated for hardiness and fruit production throughout the Southeast of USA.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the vegetation structure of Daphniphyllum macropodum community in the Yeong-sil and Seong-panack. To do so, 26plots ($(20m{\times}20m)$) were set up and surveyed. Plant communities were classified with 3 groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN and DCA Ordination; Pinus densiflora-Carpinus laxiflora (I), Carpinus laxiflora-Quercus serrata (II) and Carpinus tschonoskii (III). Daphniphyllum macropodum is appearing in understory and shrub layer of all groups. We found that Daphniphyllum macropodum will be dominated in understory and shrub layer. These results was judeged that these influence is depended on difference of altitude and accompanied species. Accompanied species were lived in similar growth environment to Daphniphyllum macropodum. That species were Styrax japonica, Quercus serrata of understory and Ilex crenata, Taxus cuspidata of shrub layer.

  • The Byokryon-Daejangbong valley forest in Keumsan area at Hallyo-Haesang National Park was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of the slope. Forty-eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 200m to 650m and part of the slope. Density, mean DBH, and basal area of the canopy trees were 820~1873trees/ha, 10.7~14.6cm, and 17.7~22.2$\m^2$/ha, respectively. With increasing elevation mean DBH and basal area of tree stratum increased while density of tree stratum decreased. As elevation increased the importance values of Quercus mongolioa, Styrax japonica, Acer pseudo-sieboldiannum, and Sorbus alnifolia increased while those of Pinus thunbergii, Pinus densiflora, Prunus sargentii, Cornus kousa, and Eurya japonica decreased. The importance values of Fraxinus sieboldiana, Quercus variabilis, and Sorbus alnifolia increased as going from lower part to upper part of the slope. However, the opposite trend was found for the importance values of Styrax japonica, Lindera erythrocarpa, and Zelkova serrata, With incresing elevation number of species, species diversity, and evenness incresed and it was suggested that man interference was relatively severe. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts and between parts of the slope were 42.0~71.8% and 74.8~76.8%, respectively. According to importance values and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into four forest communities of Quercus serrata-Pinus densiflora community in low elevation belt, Carpinus laxiflora-deciduous tree species community in high elevation belt and lower and middle parts at middle elevation belt, Quercus variabilis-Carpinus laxiflora community in upper part at middle elevation belt, and Quercus mongolica-Styrax japonica community in top area. There were significantly positive correlation among Quercus serrata, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, and Eurya japonica and among Carpinus laxiflora, Zelkova serrata, and Cornus walteri.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide data for conservation and ecological management of Pinus densiflora forest by analyzing ecological characteristics and the change of Pin us densiflora community structure for fifteen years in Namsan(Mt.). The actual vegetation of Pinus densiflora forest was divided into total six types and fifteen detail types. According to the results of TWINSPAN analysis of Pinus densiflora forest, there were fourty-four plots(unit: 400 m') and it was classified into five community types. The dominant species were Pinus densiflora in canopy layer, Styrax japonica in the understory layer and Stephanandra incisa with Rhododendron mucronujatum in the shrub layer. The index of shannon's diversity was from 1.5980 to 1.1485 per $400m^2$and the range of species number was from seventeen to twenty-two. As a result of the change of Pin us densinora forest structure, the importance percentage(1.p.) of Pinus densi. nora$(I.P.:\;77.9\%\rightarrow50.6\%) was decreased, Styraxjaponica$(I.P.:\;5.3\%\rightarrow22.6\%), Prunus sargen $(I.P.:\;1.5\%\rightarrow9.2\%) and Stephanandra incisa$(I.P.:\;3.5\%\rightarrow7.7\%) were increased for fifteen years. Based on standard of $2,000m^2$unit area, shannon's diversity changed 1.1719 into 0.8829 and species number changed thirty-four into twenty-one.
