The turbo blowers having large power capacity are generally composed of the variable inlet guide vane, the impeller and the variable diffuser. In the present study, the effect of the stagger angles on the aerodynamic performances has been investigated by CFD methods. The design specifications of the reference model having 400kW power were given as 7.43kg/s of mass flow rate, 1.66 of pressure ratio with 12000rpm of impeller rotating speed. As the first simulation parameter, the diffuser vane angle was varied in the range of ${\pm}$20 degree from the initial-design point. The inlet guide vane angles, as the second one, was changed in the range of ${\pm}$40 degree from the initial-design point. The commercial Navier-Stokes solver, ANSYS-CFX, was applied to solve the three-dimensional unsteady flow fields inside the turbo blower. Through the numerical results, the desirable setting angles were proposed to fit the best performance to the variation of the operating conditions.
Installing a ventilator for an apartment house composed of over 100 dwelling units was mandated in 2006 to improve indoor air quality. In the case of mechanical ventilators, the air change rate is kept stable, however 68% of dwellers do not operate their ventilator because of an increased electrical bill and noise. In the case of natural ventilators, the former problems are settled, but there are concerns about cold draught and an increase of heating/cooling cost. Authors are developing a heat recovery type natural ventilator which is a natural ventilator equipped with total heat recovery element, and it is expected that those problems of mechanical ventilator and natural ventilator are resolved by this. The combined type diffuser of this study is an under developed fit to the heat recovery type natural ventilator above. There are no standards to evaluate the performance for this type of diffuser. Due to this issue this study investigated the performance of the ventilation and maintained a thermal environment for the combined type diffuser by comparing it with existing diffusers. The results revealed that the performances of the combined type of diffusers showed different features from the existing ones, and was estimated to be high enough in the performances above.
This paper characterizes hi-directionally oscillating flow in planar microdiffusers in order to evaluate the frequency-dependent flow rectification performance of the microdiffusers. In the theoretical study, we analyze a hi-directionally oscillating flow in the planar microdiffuser. In the experimental study, we fabricate two different microdiffuser prototypes, having different neck widths of 100 ㎛ (D100) and 300 ㎛(D300), respectively. The experimental net flow rates are measured as 116.6 $\mu$ι/min. and 344.4 $\mu$ι/min. for D100 and D300, respectively. The experimental flow rate of D300 decreases at the oscillating flow frequencies higher than 90Hz, at which the net boundary layer thickness is reduced to the microdiffuser neck width. It is experimentally verified that the flow rectification performance and the net flow rate of the microdiffusers tend to decrease when the boundary layer thickness is smaller than the diffuser neck width.
The aerodynamic design of the two-stages of centrifugal compressors in an 1.2MW industrial gas turbine is completed with the application of numerical analyses. The final shape of an intake, the axial guide vanes and a return channel is determined using several interactions between design and two-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional design and prediction of aerodynamic performances for the compressors are performed by two different methods; one is a method with conventional loss models, and the other a method with the two-zone model. The combination methods of the Betzier curves generate three-dimensional geometric shapes of impeller blades which are to be checked with a careful change of aerodynamic blade loadings. The impeller design is finally completed by the applications of three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow solvers, and the effect of minor change of design of the second-stage channel diffuser is also studied. All the aerodynamic design results are soon to the verified by component performance tests of prototype centrifugal compressors.
Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutants emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle configuration. Basically, nozzle which has mixed flow of gas and particle is required to have the balanced coal concentration at exit, but it is very difficult to obtain that by itself without help of other device. In this study, coal distribution and pressure drop in gas-solid flow are calculated by numerical method in nozzle with various shapes of venturi diffuser as a means to get even coal particle distribution. The tentative correlations of pressure drop and exit coal distribution are deduced as function of the height, length and reducing angle of venturi from the calculated results. When coal hurner nozzle is designed, these equations are very useful to optimize the shape of venturi which minimize uneven particle distribution and pressure drop within coal nozzle.
This paper presents the fabrication and evaluation of mechanical behavior for a peristaltic micropump by flow simulation. The valve-less micropump using the diffuser/nozzle is consists of the lower plate, the middle plate, the upper plate and the tube that connects inlet and outlet of the pump. The lower plate includes the channel and the chamber, and the plain middle plate are made of glass and actuated by the piezoelectric translator. Channels and a chamber on the lower plate are fabricated on high processability silicon wafer by the DRIE(Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process. The upper plate does the roll of a pump cover and has inlet/outlet/electric holes. Three plates are laminated by the aligner and bonded by the anodic bonding process. Flow simulation is performed using error-reduced finite volume method (FVM). As results of the flow simulation and experiments, the single chamber pump has severe flow problems, such as a backflow and large fluctuation of a flow rate. It is proved that the double-chamber micropump proposed in this paper can reduce the drawback of the single-chamber one.
