  • The present study conducted heat transfer analysis in multi-layer of CD-R. It is necessary to analyze heat transfer during the recording process to find optimum power and write strategy in CD-R. This study investigated effects of several parameters such as recording speed, laser power, layer thickness and thermal property. The calculated results presented temperature distribution in the multi-layer and detailed information of recording characteristics. Optimum laser power was estimated, comparing an optimum mark length with the calculated mark lengths. The results showed that the optimum laser power was influenced significantly by the layer thickness and the thermal properties of the dye.

  • The performance of slider of a hard disk drive affects the durability of the system. Particularly, the flying ability of the slider is critical in terms of surface damage and head crash. In this work, the take-off characteristics of the slider for various types of laser zone textured bump geometries were investigated. Also, the effect of ambient pressure on the flying characteristics of the slider was experimentally observed. An index of air density which can be used as a parameter for evaluating the flying characteristic is introduced.

  • A multi-beam optical disk drive is presented as a method for improving the effective data transfer rate by increasing the beam spot number formed on an optical disk. The beam rotating actuator is necessary for putting multi-beam on more than one track. The beam rotating actuator is made up of piezoelectric material, high stiffness wire hinge and dove prism. The actuator has good frequency response above 1KHz and suitable operational range. The dynamic equation for the actuator is derived.

  • The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive. Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in the personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity components and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The results show that the front holes reduce now-induced noise and the position of pickup body affects flow near the window. In addition, il is possible for cooling of heat sources in an optical disc drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray.

  • This study was conducted to compare the laser weldability of boron steel and hot-stamped steel. In general, boron steel is used in the hot-stamping process. Hot-stamping is a method for simultaneously forming and cooling boron steel in a press die after heating it to the austenitizing temperature. Hot-stamped steel has a strength of 1500 MPa or more. Thus, in this study, the laser weldability of boron steel and thet of hot-stamped steel were investigated and compared. A continuous wave disk laser was used to produce butt and lap joints. In the butt welding, the critical cooling speed at which full penetration was obtained in the hot-stamped steel was lower than that of boron steel. In the lap welding, the joint widths were similar regardless of the welding speed when full penetration was obtained.

  • This study examines the effects on isometric lumbar extension strength, dynamic balance ability, and range of motion, after administering 8 weeks SEBT exercise (dynamic balance exercise) and Lumbar Stabilizing exercise, to open laser lumbar microdiscectomy patients. Totally, 14 patients who underwent preservation treatment for 6 weeks after undergoing open laser lumbar microdiscectomy, were enrolled for the study. Patients were randomly assigned to the Lumbar Stabilizing Exercise Group (LSG, n=7) and SEBT Exercise + Lumbar Stabilizing Exercise Group (SGLS, n=7). Results indicate that isometric lumbar extension strength ratio significantly decreases after 8 weeks rehabilitation exercise in both the LSG (p=0.007) as well as SLSG (p=0.024) groups. Normalized reach distance of the three directions in the Y-balance test to examine the dynamic balance capability showed a significant increase in both groups. The dynamic balance capability showed significant increase to the left (LSG, p=0.010; SLSG, p=0.002) and right (LSG, p=0.002; SLSG, p=0.002). Moreover, significant increase was also obtained in the range of joint operation, in both LSG (p=0.006) and SLSG (p=0.017) groups. These results indicate that both groups of rehabilitation exercise achieve positive outcomes on the isometric lumbar extension strength, range of motion, and dynamic balance ability. However, some results suggest that the SEBT program is likely to have a better efficacy.

  • The combination of laser beam and electric arc sharing common weld pool has widely been investigated since the late seventies, but it is beginning of the industrial uses. Recently, laser-GMA hybrid welding process showed possibility to overcome the tight gap tolerance with improved productivity. The laser-arc hybrid welding process is inherently complex because it has three kinds of process parameters: arc welding, laser welding and hybrid welding parameters. In this study, the optimum range of the process parameters were determined by high speed image analysis which could unveil the welding phenomena in laser-arc hybrid welding. The laser-arc hybrid welding was applied for position welding from the flat position to the overhead position and the welding characteristics were investigated.

  • Laser zone texture technology is widely used to enhance the tribological performance of high areal density media. This work investigates the transient process of melting and microscale surface deformation upon pulsed laser heating of Ni-P hard disk substrates by PLIC(Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation) method. The present results are compared with both the experimental and the Donor-Acceptor method results. It is found that the results from PLIC method are better than those of Donor-Acceptor method and they are in good agreements with the experimental results.
